Introduction
An electronic coin aims to solve the problems faced by a conventional coin. There is no chance
to cheat as the circuit operates at such a high speed that the circuit is almost imperceptible to the
human eye. Circuit implements a slowdown function by making the LEDs start to blink fast
when push button is pressed but this speed will gradually decrease and stops on any one LED
showing the final decision whether its Heads or tails.
The frequency may vary a bit with change in power supply voltage, but still the randomness and
unbiasedness will be preserved without any trouble.

Requirements
 5 to 12V DC
 1 NE555 timer IC
 1 CD4017 Decade counter IC
 1 2N3906 Transistor
 4 Resistor (ohm): 10M, 2x10K, 470
 3 Capacitors (micro-Farad): 1uF, 0.1uF, 0.01uF
 2 LEDS (different color)
 Push Button
 Breadboard
 Wires

Description
The operating voltage of this circuit is 5 to 12 volts DC. The circuit is built around two ICs i.e.,
NE555 timer IC and a decade counter IC CD4017.

There are two parts in this circuit, the first one is built around 555 timer IC that is working as an
astable multivibrator. In this mode, the circuit is arranged with R2 = 10 KΩ, R3 = 10 KΩ and C2
= 0.1 µF. With this configuration, the circuit operates as a pulse generator with a frequency in
order of kilo hertz

The clock pulses are given to a decade counter IC 4017 with the third output given to reset. It has
nine possible outputs out of which, the third is given to reset because we only need a count to 2
as a coin toss has only two possible outcomes. The first two outputs are given respectively to the
LEDs, so that the respective LED will glow for the corresponding count. If the count is 1, LED-1
will glow. If the count is 2, LED-2 will glow and after that for the next clock pulse the counter
will advance and the count increments to three. In this count, the circuit resets itself as the third
count is given to the reset pin which is PIN-15.

A 2N3906 transistor is also used, the IC will provide the pulses in fast to slow speed. The second
part has the CD4017 IC, this decade counter IC has 10 outputs, but we are only using two
outputs one for head and the other for the tail. The third output is connected with the reset.

After pushing the button S1 the 555 timers will start generating the clock pulses on the pin 14 of
the CD4017 IC because of this the LED 1 and 2 will start to blink in speed. These pulses will
gradually decrease in speed and stop on any one LED showcasing the result.

Specification
Since the NE555 timer IC will be working as an Astable multivibrator, it will continuously
switch between states without the application of any external trigger. The frequency of this can
be adjusted by adjusting the values of the resistors and the capacitor using the formula:

f = 1 / T = 1 / 0.693 * (R1 + 2R2) C

By increasing the frequency of the circuit more randomness can be obtained by making it very difficult to
perceive.
