SYNTHESIS FOR CHAPTER 1

In our discussion about the chapter I in our science, technology, and society I’ve learned
a lot of information and it also refresh some of the information that I already learn from
elementary and high school. Initially, we discuss the three core topics of this subject which are
the Science, Technology, and Society. We also discuss the correlation or the connection between
these three topics which are its give and take relationship towards one another.
After discussing the purpose of our subject, we discuss the history and the way science,
technology, and society developed over time. From the Ancient time to the Middle Ages science
and technology have developed in a very wonderful way bringing great benefits to our society
today. It continues to develop and improve until the present time. In every period we also discuss
great scientists, philosophers, and inventors who made great contributions to our society today. I
discover that there are a lot of machines and such that are invented by a certain person which I
assumed not. I also discover that there are still great scientist, philosopher, and inventor that we
don’t learn in high school.
In this lesson we’ve got a collaborative activity where we make a research or study about
the development of Science, Technology, and Society for a given continent and I was assigned to
one country. While doing research for my assigned country I was fascinated by the information
that I found. I learned that China was the first country to invent or discover such things as
printing, papermaking, gunpowder, and the compass. These are just four of their great inventions
that contribute to our society today. They also invent or create equipment and weapons that are
used in military, agriculture, building infrastructure construction such as bridges and the Great
Wall of China. Although china is very large developing country it has not really focus on
developing science and technology. They really focus on developing their traditional medicine
that their country is most famous for, like acupuncture and herbal medicines.
After the history of science, technology and society, we discuss the history of science and
technology in the Philippines. We discuss the development of science and technology in the
Philippine from the pre-Hispanic times to the present day. We also discuss famous Filipinos in
the scientific field that I like to learn about because I don’t know most of them and I don’t know
that they are the ones who invented their inventions. There are famous Filipino scientists like;
Maria Orosa known for inventing the banana ketchup, Ramon Barba known for inventing a way
to produce flowers in mango trees, Lourdes Cruz known as an expert on sea snail venom, Rafael
Guerrero III known for Tilapia Sex Reversal technology, Lilian Pateña known for seedless
calamansi and suha, Mari Jo Ruiz is known for her graph theory, and Caesar Saloma known as
the first scientist from ASEAN country to receive the Galileo award. Learning about these great
Filipinos who have great contributions in our society makes me proud as a Filipino. Finally, we
discussed areas of scientific and technology research in the Philippines and examples that can be
found in the Philippines such as the Solar Philippines at Concepcion Tarlac and Makban
Geothermal Complex located in the border of Laguna and Batangas which are examples of
Alternative and Safe Energy.
