1.0 BACKGROUND The oral mucous membranes and the conjunclivae as well as the comea (eyeball) were also recorded among cases during the outbreak. The crusts may not completely disappear for three weeks. Individuals are no longer contagious once all crusts have dried into scabs and have fallen off. Even though the symptoms of monkeypox are known to be milder than smallpox, the disease can be fatal as demonstrated in the Nigeria 2017/2018 outbreak. Figure 1 shows the frequency of signs and symptoms observed during this outbreak.
