Written Assignment Unit 1

February 3, 2020

1. Find the domain of the function using interval notation.

Answer: Domain: [6, ∞)

2. Sketch a graph of a piecewise function. Write the domain in interval notation.

The functions that were given:

{-1 < x < 1} (black)

y = 3x - 2 {1 < x < 3} (purple)
Black function: Domain: (-1, 1)
Purple function: Domain: (1, 3)

My made-up function:
y=x { 3}−2 x {2} +4 {−2< x< 3 }
Answer: Domain: (-2, 3)

3. The cost in dollars of making x items is given by the function C(x) = 10x + 500.
a. The fixed cost is determined when zero items are produced. Find the fixed cost for this
item.
Zero items = x = 0
C(x) = 10(0) + 500
C(x) = 500
Answer: $500

b. What is the cost of making 25 items?

C(x) = 10(25) + 500
C(x) = 250 + 500
C(x) = 750
Answer: The cost of making 25 items is $750.

c. Suppose the maximum cost allowed is $1500. What are the domain and range of the cost
function, C(x)?
Range: (?, 1500)
The domain has to be positive, so x has to be 0 and more.
C(x) = 10(0) + 500
C(x) = 500
When there are no items made, the cost if $500.
Range: [500, 1500]
To find out the maximum items that can be made with $1500, we put C(x) = 1500.
1500 = 10(x) + 500
1000 = 10(x)
100 = x or x = 100
Domain: [0, 100]
Answer: Domain: [0, 100], Range: [500, 1500]
