AMERICAN KESTREL

The American kestrel, also called the sparrow hawk, is the smallest and most common falcon in
North America. It has a roughly two-to-one range in size over subspecies and sex, varying in size
from about the weight of a blue jay to a mourning dove.

The American Kestrel is the continent's most common and widespread falcon, but
populations declined by an estimated 1.41% per year for a cumulative decline of about 53%
between 1966 and 2019, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey.
An American kestrel is the smallest and most colorful falcon in North America and is one of the
best known, most frequently observed, and readily identifiable raptors in North America.
Kestrels are conspicuous, colorful, open-habitat birds of prey about the size of a Mourning
Dove.
