Pope Francisco

Francisco was born on December 17, 1936 in the neighborhood of

Flores, Buenos Aires , Argentina, in the bosom of a modest family.

Family
Son of a railway employee of Piedmontese origin, Mario Bergoglio,
and Regina María Sívori, a housewife. He had four brothers. His
father immigrated to Argentina from the Italian region of Piedmont.

He was baptized on Christmas Day 1936 in the Basilica María

Auxiliadora y San Carlos in the Almagro neighborhood of Buenos
Aires. Rosa Vasallo has said of his grandmother that she was "the
woman who had the greatest influence" in his life.

He inherited his passion for Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro

from his father, of which he has jerseys and membership card
number 88,235.

At twenty, he had part of a lung removed when he underwent an

operation. However, except for slightly limiting his breathing
capacity, it does not affect his quality of life.

Studies
During his childhood he attended the Salesian Wilfrid Barón de los
Santos Ángeles school in the town of Ramos Mejía.

He studied at the industrial secondary school ENET Nº 27 Hipólito

Yrigoyen , receiving the title of chemical technician . He liked to
dance tango and used to go out to practice it with his friends.

jesuit priest
He worked cleaning the floor of a flower shop and as a nightclub
bouncer. At twenty-one he decided to become a priest. On March
11, 1958, he joined the novitiate of the Society of Jesus , entering
the seminary in the Villa Devoto neighborhood.

Professor
He earned a degree in Philosophy and studied Humanities in
Chile. Between 1964 and 1965 he was a professor
of Literature and Psychology at the College of the Immaculate
Conception in Santa Fe, to later opt for Theology at the 'San José'
college in San Miguel.

Ordination
He was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969 . Since then he
has had a long career within the order of which he became
"provincial" from 1973 to 1979, during the Argentine military
dictatorship.

He tried at all costs to maintain the unity of the Jesuit movement,

influenced by Liberation Theology, under the slogan of "maintaining
the non-politicization of the Society of Jesus".

He is fluent in Spanish, Italian, Latin and German, as well as having

an average knowledge of English, French, Portuguese, Ukrainian
and Piedmontese (Italian dialect). He moved to Germany to obtain
his doctorate and upon his return he resumed pastoral activity as a
priest in the province of Mendoza.

position of archbishop of Buenos Aires on February 28, 1998. At
that time he did not live in the cardinal's palace, but in an ordinary
apartment. He went to work every day by bus and cooked
himself. During the consistory of February 21, 2001, Pope John
Paul II named him cardinal of the title of Saint Robert Bellarmine. In
addition, he is primate of Argentina.

After at least four votes in a conclave that lasted 25 hours and a
half, and two black smokers , the 115 cardinal electors tipped the
vote in their favor and on March 13, 2013, the 266th Pope was
elected , being 76 years old; two years younger than Pope Benedict
XVI upon his election. He imposed the name Francis in memory
of Saint Francis of Assisi , becoming the first American and the

and the first non-European Pope since the Syrian Gregory III in 741.
