LESSON PLAN Teacher: Nisa Ali Lesson: 5 out of 5

Subject: Science Unit 2: The Changes to Land Over Time

Objective
SWBAT summarize the different properties of weathering and erosion by creating a brochure.
Science Standard Math CCLS
ESS1.C: The History of Planet Earth CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.4
Some events happen very quickly; others occur very Compare two three-digit numbers based on

comparisons.
Materials Vocabulary
● Construction Paper, Pictures, Glue and Markers Tier 3:
● Slides ● Landscape ( an area of land )
Nisa Ali -- Lesson Plan 5 ● Decrease ( something that lowers )
● Characteristics ( traits someone has )
● Composition ( the make-up of something )

Tier 2:
● Steady ( slowly/carefully )
● Brochure ( a booklet with information )

Time Connection/Motivation
3 mins. There used to be an apple tree in front of my grandparents home. The most delicious,
bright red apples would grow on it. It would attract lots of squirrels of course. They would
climb the trees, bring down a bunch of apples, and take huge, quick bites out of them,
before anybody noticed. They would get caught of course, and every time they did, they
would leave pieces of apple everywhere and the wind would transport the apples to
different places.

Just like how the squirrels and wind caused the apples to break down and move from one
place to another, natural materials go through a similar process under Weathering and
Erosion. Overtime, the landscape of the areas affected changes, and there are several
examples around the world that prove so.
Mini-lesson
12 mins. As we’re going through the slides, please take notes on the two different places we will
discuss.

~ Slides
● Review Weathering and Erosion definitions
● Cape Cod – Can you recall on why are there more islands now? (ans. The Atlantic
Ocean caused pieces of rock to weather rapidly, and over time they eroded to other
places, forming islands).
● Nile River - The rocks and other natural materials around the Nile River are
continuously experiencing weathering. Over time, this material is slowly eroding
into many parts of the Nile River, causing the body of water to decrease in space.

Independent/Partner/Group Work
20 mins. Out of three places that were impacted by Weathering and Erosion, students will randomly
be chosen to create a brochure on one individually. They will analyze photos of the places
over time discuss how weathering and erosion changed the characteristics of those places
in their brochures.

Teacher will circulate while students are working with a partner to complete the
assignment. Possible guiding questions that will help further student thinking are:
- Why do you think the Grand Canyon formed by the Colorado River?
- What process do you think created Sand Dunes in the Sahara dessert?
- How do you think the ice transported, creating the Baffin Island Waterfall of
Canada?

Share/Closing
10 mins. Students will share their brochures with their partners and explain the information they
included.

Discussion should lead to something like:

● The rock materials around the Colorado River, broke down and eroded into the
water over time, creating the Canyon.
● The wind continuously transported the sand around the Sahara Desert, creating
Sand Dunes.
● There used to be glaciers in the Baffin Island. Over time, the glaciers eroded,
melted, creating a waterfall.

Homework
Write a few sentences on what you learned from the brochure your friend created.
