1 SCOPE

The scope of this document is to provide users with guidelines on how to use the ThingPark
Wireless BS Commissioning tool. This tool is part of ThingPark Wireless TWA platform and
typically used by Base Station commissioners to complete the following tasks:

▪ Record Base Station engineering parameters such as antenna’s-built characteristics

(antenna gain, cable losses, antenna type, azimuth for directional antennas,
surrounding clutter environment and obstacles, delay between the Base Station
equipment and the antenna, and so forth…). The electrical characteristics of the
antenna can be either based on on-site measurements or provided in equipment
datasheets. These engineering parameters are then used by the tool to update the
maximum conducted TX power of the Base Station, considering the radiated power
levels set in the LRR configuration files.
▪ Validate that the Base Station is up and running after commissioning, by checking its
“Status” in real time, as well as testing its connectivity to ThingPark core network.
Using an appropriate test device provided to commissioners (for instance, LoRa®
demonstrator), the tool allows testing connectivity between the Base Station and the
network by displaying the packets exchanged in real time.
Although the BS Commissioning tool allows setting many input fields available in the Network
Manager tool, it does not replace it latter.
Being accessible via the web interface, the BS Commissioning tool is designed specifically to
be easily accessed from a smartphone or a tablet, but not necessarily a computer. This is very
practical for on-site commissioning.
Important Version 2.x of the BS Commissioning tool is only compatible with ThingPark
Wireless 4.x. For ThingPark Wireless release 3.x, version 1.11.3 of the BS Commissioning tool
should be used.

4 INTERFACE OVERVIEW

Once logged into the BS Commissioning portal, the following window appears:

Figure 3 – BS Commissioning interface overview

The interface is based on two frames:

▪ A top bar menu
▪ A main application frame showing the Base Station list or Base Station details
The top bar menu shows a search bar and two buttons used to update the Network Manager
parameters or to list the Base Stations.

4.1 Updating the Network Manager

In the previous version of the BS Commissioning tool (version 1.x, supporting ThingPark
Wireless 3.x), a lot of fields set in the tool were stored in the “Administrative info” field of the
Base Station on the Network Manager.
In ThingPark Wireless 4.x, with the new version of the Network Manager, only a few
information is now stored in the “Administrative Info” field, because a dedicated tab has been
created for antennas parameters.
Accordingly, to ease the migration of existing information in the “Administrative Info” field
towards their new respective fields in the Network Manager, the BS Commissioning tool
supports an “Updated Network Manager” feature. This feature is useful for Base Stations of
which the data was already filled by the previous version of the tool.

// Maximum number of BS to display
define('BS_LIST_MAX', 20);

Important By default, only the first twenty Base Stations are displayed.

4.4 Managing a Base Station

In the “BS List” window, the search criteria displays a list of one/several Base Stations. Each
Base Station is displayed with some associated information (illustrated by the example in
Figure 7):

▪ ID of the Base Station

▪ Base Station given name
▪ Time of last update
▪ Owner of the update
▪ Base Station activation state

Figure 7 – BS Commissioning tool: “BS List” view

Note Clicking on the right allows you to directly switch to the Base Station testing mode.

3. Fields that can be set/modified in the BS Commissioning tool, and consequently updated
automatically in the Network Manager tool:

▪ Name: Base Station’s given name. When this field is modified in the BS Commissioning
tool, changes are automatically updated in the Network Manager, in the orange
rectangle in Figure 9 below.
Note It is possible to select the name from a drop-down list, if the list of LRR names is
predefined by the tool administrator.
▪ Address: Physical (geographical) address of the Base Station. When this field is
modified in the BS Commissioning tool, changes are automatically updated in the
Network Manager, in the green rectangle in Figure 9.
▪ Altitude Above Ground: Reference altitude of the Base Station above the ground level,
in meters. Note that it is also possible to the altitude above ground separately for each
antenna (please refer to section 4.4.2).
▪ MAC Address: MAC address of the Base Station. This value is stored in the
“Administrative Info” space in the Network Manager (see the blue rectangle in Figure
9).

▪ RF hardware configuration in use: that is, the hardware configuration of the Base
Station, selected from a drop-down list of available RF configurations. This
configuration defines the number of sectors, number of physical antennas and number
of RF boards configured for this LRR. When this field is updated in the BS
Commissioning tool, it is directly displayed in “RF hardware configuration in use” space
in the “Antennas” tab in Network Manager – see Figure 11.
▪ Antenna Details: Antenna type, gain, azimuth, cable loss, and cable delay are the main
fields defined for the antenna. These parameters and some others can be modified as
detailed in section 4.4.2.
For multi-antenna configurations (tri-sector configurations or antenna diversity
configurations), the tool allows a separate page for each antenna, in order to set
independently the characteristics of each antenna.
In the previous version of the BS Commissioning tool, these data were all displayed in
“Administrative Info” space (see the blue rectangle in Figure 9). With BS
Commissioning version 2.x, only the antenna type (if set in the tool) cannot be directly
set in a separate field in the Network Manager tool; the other fields are directly
populated in the Network Manager.
Note Antenna gain and cable loss are still stored in the “Administrative Info” space
even if they are populated in the appropriate fields in the “Antennas” tab; this choice
was made to ensure that all the gain/loss values set in the tool are logged by the
Network Manager even if they were not successfully updated in the LRR (for instance,
in case of the LRR being temporarily unreachable).
▪ GPS antenna details: This section appears if the GPS receiver is locked. To set the GPS
antenna parameters, see section 4.4.3. All GPS antenna parameters are stored in the
“Antennas” tab in the Network Manager (see Figure 11), with the exception of the GPS
antenna gain that is stored in the “Administrative info” space.

4.4.2 Antenna Parameters
In order to set the antenna characteristics (cable losses, the delay between the LRR and the
antenna…), proceed as follows:
1. Click to edit the antenna fields.
The following page is displayed:

Figure 12 – BS Commissioning tool: Setting the antenna parameters

2. Click on each section to display its parameters to set.
Set the parameters as you wish.
3. Click Save.

Input parameters

▪ Antenna:
o Type: Omnidirectional / Directional / Undefined.
Note In addition to the antenna type, it is possible to select the antenna model
from a drop-down list, if the list of antennas is predefined by the tool
administrator. In this case, the antenna gain will be automatically filled
according to the antenna model (the relation between the antenna model and
its gain shall be defined in the antenna-list file).
o Gain (dBi): sets the antenna gain in dBi.
Note If the antenna model is selected from a predefined list, the antenna gain
cannot be set manually, as it is already defined in the antenna list.
o Horizontal HPBW (degrees): Angle between the half-power (-3 dB) points and
the main lobe (Half Power Beam Width).
Note Only applicable when Type=Directional.
o Azimuth (degrees): sets the azimuth of the antenna in degrees.
Note Only applicable when Type=Directional.
o Additional information: sets any additional information related to the antenna.

▪ Location:
o GPS latitude (WSG84 decimal degrees): sets the latitude of the antenna.
o GPS longitude (WSG84 decimal degrees): sets the longitude of the antenna.
o Altitude above sea level (m): sets the altitude of the antenna.
o Height above the ground level (m): sets the height of the antenna.
▪ Cable:
o Cable loss (dB): refers to the total losses that are introduced by cables/jumpers
as well as any additional losses between the LRR and the antenna (for instance,
external diplexer…).
The value of this parameter is directly set in the LRR software, in order for the
LRR to derive the target conducted TX power from the radiated power
configured in the Base Station.
o Cable delay (ns): refers to the total transmission delay (in nanoseconds)
introduced by the cables/jumpers as well as any additional delay between the
LRR and the physical antenna.
Note This delay is not round-trip delay, and is particularly important for geo-
localization.
It is either set according to field measurements, or based on datasheet
specifications for a given cable type and length.
▪ Environment:
o Propagation environment: this field determines the dominant environment
where the Base Station is installed. Possible choices are: Undefined
environment / Rural flat / Rural trees / Rural forest / Suburban / Tower / Urban
/ Urban dense. Knowledge of the propagation environment makes
troubleshooting of radio-related issues much simpler.
o Installation mode: This field determines whether the gateway is installed
outdoors or indoors. For outdoor installation, 2 typical modes exist: either the
gateway is installed on a building rooftop (typical for macro-cell deployments),
or it is installed below a building rooftop (for instance, on street furniture, lamp
posts…) like a small-cell deployment scenario. Knowledge of the installation
mode is useful to predict the average RF coverage of the cell, it also makes
troubleshooting of radio-related issues much simpler.
o Antenna configuration mode: records information about the nearest obstacles
and their distance in each direction in space. The clearance type is either
“cleared within 500m” (meaning there is no direct obstacle within a 500m
radius) or “obstacle blocking” (meaning there is an obstacle within 500m
radius, in which case the distance to the nearest obstacle may be recorded).
Knowledge of the obstacle blocking information is very interesting to predict
the average RF coverage of the cell, it also makes troubleshooting of radio-
related issues much simpler.

▪ Basic mode allows to log in a single value for obstacle blocking, without
any break-down per direction.
▪ Advanced mode allows logging a separate information for obstacle
blocking for each direction.
▪ Basic mode is set by default. It is possible to switch to advanced mode
by clicking on “Switch to the advanced mode” button.
▪ TX power: This section provides the maximum allowed/effective radiated TX Power for
RX1 and RX2 frequencies, the power levels are directly retrieved from the LRR taking
into account the antenna gain and cable losses.
o Maximum allowed TX power on RX1/RX2 (dBm EIRP): these values are
generally dictated by the local regulations and the hardware capability of the
Base Station.
o Effective TX power on RX1/RX2 (dBm EIRP): defines the effective radiated
power of the gateway on RX1 and RX2, including the authorized range of
calibrated power levels.
Note These values do not take into consideration the per-channel power offset.
Note
Ensure to click Save once all configuration parameters are correctly set.

Figure 13 – BS Commissioning tool: Save the antenna parameters

Output parameters:
Two output parameters are sent to the Base Station when modified:

▪ the gain
▪ the cable loss
These metrics are then pushed by the BS Commissioning tool towards the LRR in question to
configure the corresponding “Gain” and “cable loss” fields of the /usr/etc/lrr/custom.ini
file.

These fields are read by the LRR software to configure its conducted TX Power = LRR_Power –
Gain + cableloss:

▪ “LRR_Power” corresponds to the setting done in the corresponding RFRegion which

the LRR in question belongs to.
▪ “Gain” and “cableloss” refer to the values set in “custom.ini” file, which are in turn set
by the BS Commissioning tool or directly via the Network Manager tool.

When the antenna gain and cable loss are successfully updated in the BS commissioning tool
after clicking Save, the effective values of these two parameters are sent to the Base Station,
and the tool displays a message similar to the red text below, until the Base Station answers
it:

Figure 14 – BS Commissioning tool: Updating the antenna gain and cable loss on the base station

When the Base Station answer has been received by the BS Commissioning tool, it displays
the following screen:

Figure 15 – BS Commissioning tool: antenna gain and cable loss updated on the base station

Important

▪ Once the data have been saved in the BS Commissioning tool, the antenna gain and
cable loss values shall be sent to the Base Station via a dedicated web-service of the
Network Manager API. This web-service requires the following pre-requisites:
o The Network Supplier must have the “Delegate Administration” rights.
o The LRR version of the Base Station has to be at least 2.2.17.
If any of the two pre-requisites mentioned above is not fulfilled, the tool shall set the
antenna gain and cable loss into the LRR directly through the LRC (via POST
commands), which is the approach adopted by the previous release of the BS
Commissioning tool (v1.11.3 and before).
While the BS Commissioning tool is waiting for the Base Station’s response saying these
values have been taken into account, the values are tagged “updating”.

Figure 16 – BS Commissioning tool: antenna gain still in updating mode

The Base Station will stay in this mode until the answer coming from the Base Station
has been received by the BS Commissioning tool.

Important In the current release of the Network Manager tool, the base station’s
response only supports integer values (even if the effective value set locally at the LRR
is the right value in float format).
Therefore, setting decimal values for antenna gain and cable loss shall keep the BS
Commissioning tool in “updating” state because the values returned by the LRR are
different from those requested by the user. This issue is tracked by the R&D ticket
RDTP-1615.

▪ If the value of the antenna gain and/or cable loss is different between the
“Administration info” space and the “Antennas” tab in the Network Manager (as per
Figures 17 and 18 below), the BS Commissioning tool takes the “Administration info”
setting as reference values; hence the display is illustrated by Figure 19:

Figure 17 – Network Manager tool: antenna gain set to 2 in the “Administration info” space

Figure 18 – Network Manager tool: antenna gain value stored is 3 in the “Antennas” tab

Figure 19 – BS Commissioning tool: antenna gain displayed is 2

The Base Station also is tagged as “NM partially updated”, which means it needs to be
updated, as the antenna gain values are not the same:

Figure 20 – BS Commissioning tool: base station tagged as partially updated

This situation may happen when the Base Station is not temporarily unreachable when
the antenna gain/cable loss values were logged into the BS Commissioning tool.

▪ Antenna and cable delay (nanoseconds): refers to the total transmission delay (in
nanoseconds) introduced by the cables/jumpers as well as any additional delay
between the LRR and the physical GPS antenna.
Note This delay is not round-trip delay and is particularly important for geo-
localization.
It is either set according field measurements, or based on datasheet specifications for
a given cable type and length.
▪ Horizontal distance (m): horizontal distance between the GPS antenna and the Base
Station.
▪ Vertical distance (m): vertical distance between the GPS antenna and the Base Station.
▪ Additional information: additional information related to the GPS antenna.
