1) Show that the rigid column-to-column splice connection shown in Figure 1 satisfies all serviceability
and ultimate requirements. The connection is subjected to an ultimate moment of 300kNm and an
ultimate shear force of 900kN. Assume that the holes are drilled, the steel is grade 350W steel (ultimate
tensile strength of plates = 480MPa) and the bolts are M20, grade 8.8 HSFG bolts (tensile strength of
bolts = 830MPa). The surfaces of the connected parts are blast cleaned, the installation method is turn-
of-the-nut and the serviceability load is related to the ultimate load by a factor of 1.5.
