Competition of Cartagena 2023

The first edition of the Festival and Percussion Competition of Cartagena 2023,
sponsored by UNIBAC (Institution of Fine Arts and Sciences of Bolivar), COLPAS
(Colombia Chapter-Percussive Arts Society), APA (Australian Percussion Academy), SG
Music Publishing, Bloom Dance and wellness, Percushop, Groover Pro Percussion, and
Adams Musical Instruments, will take place in the city of Cartagena on August 14, 15,
and 16, at the Adolfo Mejía Conservatory, affiliated with UNIBAC, with the aim of
promoting and encouraging musical performance at the basic and intermediate levels
of solo percussion in music conservatories and higher education schools in Colombia,
Cartagena, and the Colombian Caribbean.

Competition Rules
The competition and festival are open to students from universities and tertiary
institutions of any nationality over 18 years of age by April 1, 2023, for active and

passive participants. Active participants must be enrolled in any of the conservatories


or music programs qualified by the education or culture ministries of their place of
origin. The event is open to both national and international participants.
The festival committee will decide the number of active and passive participants, as
well as having the autonomy to declare any of the established categories void. All
required information and documentation must be sent in full within the established
dates.

Passive Participants
To participate as a passive participant, fill out the registration form (registration link)
and specify the mode of attendance. Passive participants can attend workshops,
master classes, concerts, and scheduled activities based on capacity and be spectators
during the final round.

Active Participants
To participate as an active participant, fill out the registration form (registration link) and
specify the mode of attendance. Active participants are those who will be dynamic
members in the competition, attending all workshops, master classes, concerts, and
scheduled activities.

Round 1
To participate in Round One, each competitor must provide the following information
and documents in the registration form:
• A copy of the applicant's identity document
• A document, voucher, or card certifying that they belong to a conservatory or higher
education music program qualified as an active student.
• A brief biography (maximum of 300 words)
• Category to which they are applying
• A complete list of the works they intend to present during each round of the
competition, following the requirements of each category. The list should specify the
composer, title, and duration of the interpretation of each piece or fragment chosen.
Attach the score if available.
Each video of the first round must be submitted as a YouTube link, available for public
viewing, and subtitled as follows: FPC 2023 / FULL NAME of the participant / ROUND 1 /
Composer of the work or study/Name of the piece or fragment.

It is not allowed to use video recordings of previous concerts and/or previously


published videos on Youtube. The first round of competition must be performed and
recorded in one session, in one take, without editing or cuts. The performer must
introduce themselves as a participant of FPC 2023 at the beginning of the recording.
The recording must be real-time and not edited or altered in any way with a single
camera. Attach the YouTube link (Unlisted) (For active participants) with a maximum
duration of 2 minutes; with a recording date between April 1 and May 20, 2023.
The festival's organizing committee reserves the right to disqualify candidates who have
submitted enhanced or modified recordings in the studio and/or applicants who send
incorrect links or have modified the initially shared video after the closing dates in the
different stages of the call.
Videos uploaded on YouTube and links to them cannot be modified after Friday, May
20th, 2023.
Note: The video for Round 1 and the final round may be the same, with the exception
that the Round 1 video must be a maximum of 2 minutes in duration, while the
presentation in the final round must be a maximum of 10 minutes.
Results Publication: List of qualified passive participants and active participants
classified for the final round will be published on June 24th, 2023.
Final Round: Wednesday, August 16th.

Schedule:

Announcement of the festival and competition on social media: Monday, March 6th,
2023.

Registration opening date: Saturday, April 1st, 2023. LINK (Available from April 1st)
Registration deadline and submission of documentation and videos for the first round:
Saturday, May 20th, 2023.
Results Publication (Qualified Passive Participants) and (Active Participants Classified
for the Final Round): Saturday, June 24th, 2023.
Workshops, master classes, concerts, final round: August 14th-15th-16th, 2023.
Festival registration is open to all.

Categories:
In both Round 1 and the final round, the contestant must apply to the same category
(Acoustic Snare Drum, Multi-percussion, 2-mallet Keyboard, or 4-mallet Keyboard).
Participants are only allowed to apply to one category.
The repertoire to be presented in Round 1 must not exceed 2 minutes in duration and
must belong to the category to which the participant applied.
The final round will be performed in a concert setting with an audience.

For the final round:


Acoustic Snare Drum (without electronics, tape or fixed support)
A complete work, study, or movement of no more than 10 minutes in duration of free
choice will be presented as a soloist without accompaniment.

Multi-percussion:
Set of membranes and/or idiophones (Latin Timbales, Congas, Bongos, Drum Set, or
other multiple percussion instrument sets) does not include cymbals.
A complete work, study, or movement of no more than 10 minutes in duration of free
choice will be presented as a soloist without accompaniment.

2-mallet Keyboard: Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone other keyboard percussion


A complete work, study, or movement of no more than 10 minutes in duration of free
choice will be presented as a soloist without accompaniment.

4-mallet Keyboard: Marimba, Vibraphone other keyboard percussion


A complete work, study, or movement of no more than 10 minutes in duration of free
choice will be presented as a soloist.
Note: The repertoire to be presented for the final round in all categories must comply
with the available instruments for the event (see available instruments).
Active participants who do not qualify for the final round have the opportunity to be
passive participants.

Available Instruments
The instruments for the festival and competition will be available for the practice of the
competitors selected for the final round, and will be announced before the festival
closes. Practice times and activity schedules will be announced during the
concentration days.

Note: Instruments not included in the available instruments list (such as chonta
marimba, cajón, traditional drums, cymbals, among others) must be provided by each
finalist. The Festival will only provide the instruments described in the above list.
Scoring Criteria:
Each judge will evaluate competitors during both rounds based on a set of criteria (such
as range, artistic ability, technique, interpretation, phrasing, stage presence, and
sonority) and assign a combined score.
Scoring:
Scoring will be in a range of 70 to 100 points.
Scores lower than 69 points will be disqualified from the competition.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS:


All recognitions and awards (IN THE FINAL ROUND) will be given unless the jury determines that
the competitors' performance quality does not justify an award. A total of 4 awards (between
drumsticks and sheet music) will be given, awarded to a single winner for each category.
Likewise, a participation certificate will be given to each attendee at the end of the festival
according to the registration modality. Candidates agree to accept the jury's decisions and
respect the contest's rules. All Prizes: Sticks, mallets and mallet bags for all sections donated
by the Australian Percussion Academy.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD, AND TRANSPORTATION:


The stay, food, and transportation will be covered by each participant, both passive and
active, every day of the festival.

DATA TREATMENT:

Each participant will express voluntarily, prior, explicit, informed, and unequivocal
consent to carry out the collection, storage, use, circulation, suppression, exchange, and,
in general, the treatment of the information presented and their personal data, in any
case, guaranteeing its adequate use. On the other hand, participants must bear in mind
that personal data found in public access sources, regardless of the medium through
which access is obtained, understood as such data or databases that are available to
the public, can be processed by anyone as long as they are public data.
