Spider Facts Primary Resource

This primary resource features seven fascinating facts about spiders. How many species of
spiders are there? For how long may a tarantula not eat? Which spider species can change
colour?

This primary resource can be used to introduce children to spiders - and show how they’re far
more than just scary creepy-crawlies! It can be used as a printed handout for each pupil to
review and annotate, or for display on the interactive whiteboard for class discussion.

Activity:

Ask pupils to carry out their own research (either in groups, in pairs or individually) on one of
the spiders included in this primary resource. What can they find out about their chosen
species? Get them to create a labelled picture/poster of the spider, featuring the interesting
facts they’ve discovered. They should include information about the spider’s anatomy, habitat,
range, diet, defense mechanisms and unique characteristics.

Pupils could also imagine that they’ve met someone who thinks that spiders are nothing more
than scary creepy-crawlies. How can they convince them otherwise? Get the children to carry
out their own research and create a poster, presentation or speech explaining why spiders are,
in fact, fascinating creatures that play an important role in nature.
