For my free composition I decided to compose a piece on a marimba and vibraphone.

My aim was to
create a piece that would be memorable while still being complex. I took inspiration for the bass line
from an arrangement of The Legend of Zelda as a marimba trio. I particularly wanted to create a
minimalist song for marimba and vibraphone as they have a very distinctive timbre. I used several
minimalist techniques like common repetition of a part as well as mixing different melodies together
to create a varied texture. My piece is based in free form as I felt it helped me express the style while
allowing for varied melodies. The vibraphone is the main part in the composition as it stands out well
with metal bars compared to the marimba. The supporting lines, played on the marimba consists of 2
different players who support the main melody with constant repetition to help keep the listener
engaged with the piece.
