PROBLEM 1.6
George Kyparisis (using data from Problem 1.5) determines his costs to be as
follows:
◆ Labor: $10 per hour
◆ Resin: $5 per pound
◆ Capital expense: 1% per month of investment
◆ Energy: $0.50 per BTU
Show the percent change in productivity for one month last year versus one month
this year, on a multifactor basis with dollars as the common denominator.
Answer :
LAST YEAR

Labor 300 hrs. @ 10/hour 3,000

Resin 50 pounds @ 5/pound 250
Capital 10,000 × 0.01 100
Energy 3,000 × 0.50 1,500
Total Cost 4,850

Total Cost = Labor cost + resin cost + capital cost + energy cost
= (10)(300) + (5)(50) + (0.01)(10,000) + (0.50)(3000)
= 3000 + 250 + 100 + 1500
= 4850
Total cost for one month last year = $4,850
Multifactor productivity of one month last year: 1,000 outputs / 4,850 = 0.2062 per dollar

THIS YEAR

Labor 275 hrs. @ 10/hour 2,750

Resin 45 pounds @ 5/pound 225
Capital 11,000 × 0.01 110
Energy 2,850 × 0.50 1,425
Total Cost 4,510

Total cost = (10)(275) + (5)(45) + (0.01)(11,000) + (0.50)(2,850)

= 2750 + 225 + 110 + 1425
= 4510
Total cost for one month this year = $4,510
Multifactor productivity of one month this year: 1,000 outputs / 4,510 = 0.2217 per dollar
Percentage change: (0.2217-0.2062) / 0.2062 = 0.075 or 7.5%
