A Look Closer to A Closer Look

(A Reaction Paper)

“Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong”, a seven-word tweet that shook a global
connection, especially to China and Chinese relations.
The anti-extradition bill protest of Hong Kong to China has been a long-fought issue that
does not just concern the citizens of Hong Kong but also the world. As the world condemns the
China with regards to this issue, China has seen the world to be an enemy. To whoever stands in
support to Hong Kong is seen to be by China and by Chinese themselves as unreasonable. In the
Global arena of business relations, this implicates great impact as China becomes as one of the
largest actors in the Globalization.
In the case of the Huston Rocket General Manager Daryl Morey, a single tweet ignited
discussions that crossed beyond cultural, geographical, and ethical boundaries in business. From
which, a discussion that was triggered by its linkage to the markets in Hong Kong and China, the
National Basketball Association (NBA) was forced to decide a value judgement. As a course of
action, the NBA issued an apology to formally settle the issue and repair its Chinese relations.
Taking a closer look to this instance, NBA has failed to protect one’s basic human right
of standing for his views on global issues. This creates a link that supports the notion that the
sports giant is obviously suppressing one’s right of expression to protect its global relations,
especially to China being its largest market. It is a questionable move that the organization made
making the global community of humanitarian affairs questions its ethical integrity.
Such actions among businesses has been evident as well in other companies and
organization. It is saddening that the growing connection held by capitalism has drover business
interests into making profit than protecting people’s right. From which it can be concluded that
an organization or a nation with immense power in the global arena of business could manipulate
not make a great shift to the actors of the globalization process. The fear to take account to one’s
action is quite ‘regrettable’ than taking a stand to global issues. However, for the NBA and other
business, their economic stand, status, and interest are being put in hand more.
This does not confer to the Corporate Social Responsibility that businesses are opt to
uphold, concerning not it’s interest but its impact in creating social welfare among communities
and people. Its is less likely to be seen today especially that business connection matters more to
maintain financial security than ethical principle that has to be levied. The instance of the NBA
being submissive to its market than reasonable to its members is how the profit is shaping a
business to the point that it disregards one’s right, and suppresses the others.
To take a closer look is a matter of change, an initiative to transform business to ways
that it defines its vision, mission, objectives, and core values bound to its corporate social
responsibility that is evident and felt. Businesses are subjected to making an impact. An impact
that benefits people’s welfare and not feed personal interests.
Let people take their stand. May businesses support values. Oppression of right is
suppressed not fed.
