5 Questions to Help You Craft Compelling Characters

LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE AT: www.savannahgilbo.com/blog/crafting-characters

Just like the people you know in real life, each of your characters should be well-rounded and
fully-developed. That means they should have their own unique history, worldview,
preferences, beliefs, values, insecurities, and fears. So, before you start writing your next novel,
ask yourself these five questions about your characters:

What does your character want?

Why does he or she want this? What's motivating your character?
What's standing in his or her way externally?
What's standing in his or her way internally?
What's at stake if your character fails to accomplish this goal?

If you can answer these five questions before you start writing, your story will start to take shape
right before your eyes. You'll know what your character is chasing, why he or she wants it, what
kind of external conflict he or she will face along the way, and what's he or she stands to lose.
These are all key ingredients to writing a story that works!

CHARACTER + EXTERNAL & INTERNAL CONFLICT + HIGH STAKES = STORY

Use the spaces below and on the next page to flesh out your characters. I recommend doing
this work not only your protagonist, but for any other important character in your story, too.
