Course Title: English for Arts and Humanities

Aims and Objective

The objective of the course is to equip students with the skills to individually carry out research and to
produce and present a properly formatted and referenced piece of academic writing, as well as to
confidently engage in discussion about complex texts relevant to Arts and Humanities.

Intended Learning Outcomes of the Course

On completion of the course, students should be able to

ILO1. apply critical thinking and reading skills to the selection and evaluation of secondary sources in
Arts and Humanities
ILO2. apply more advanced summarizing and paraphrasing skills in the use of relevant authentic texts
in Arts and Humanities
ILO3. produce a critique of a film related to an Arts and Humanities topic
ILO4. produce a research paper referencing a variety of secondary sources in Arts and Humanities
ILO5. use a range of discussion skills to analyse complex subject matter related to Arts and Humanities

Unit 1: Film Studies

Reading:
 Analysing the conventions and language of film critiques
 Evaluating a variety of textual genres within the Arts and Humanities umbrella
 Following the writer’s argument
 Understanding the writer’s opinion

Writing:
 Writing summaries from multiple sources
 Choosing between paraphrase and quotation
 Writing a critique of a film related to an arts and humanities topic
 Developing an argument in an Arts and Humanities research essay
 Exploring a variety of structures and organizational patterns of research essays
