#16. Why do you think so much music was written about the Vietnam War? Songs that spoke directly to the
war were proof that people were talking about this cataclysmic event, and a way to safely express the
ambivalence that many in the field felt. Even songs that weren't directly about the war — like “Chain of
Fools” — could take on new meaning in Vietnam.
#17. Why is music such an effective and powerful form of protest? Music
is an effective way of
protest due to it being a peaceful way of giving out your thoughts and opinions in
the form of song and good sounds, not harsh screams and rants.

LYRICS NEEDED
BALLARD OF THE GREEN BERETS BAD MOON A RISING (1969) WAR (1970)
(1964): I see a bad moon a-rising War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Fighting Soldiers from the sky I see trouble on the way Absolutely nothing
Fearless men who jump and die I see earthquakes and lightnin' War, huh, yeah
Men who mean just what they say I see bad times today What is it good for
The brave men of the Green Beret Don't go 'round tonight Absolutely nothing
Silver Wings upon their chest It's bound to take your life Say it again, why'all
These are men America's best There's a bad moon on the rise Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
100 men will test today I hear hurricanes a-blowing War means tears to thousands of mothers
But only 3 win the Green Beret I know the end is coming soon eyes
Trained to live of nature's land I fear rivers over flowing When their sons go to fight
Trained in combat hand to hand I hear the voice of rage and ruin And lose their lives
Men who fight by night and day Don't go 'round tonight I said, war, huh good god, why'all
What is it good for
Courage take from the Green Beret It's bound to take your life
Absolutely nothing say it again
Silver Wings upon their chest There's a bad moon on the rise it ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
These are men America's best I hope you got your things together (War) friend only to the undertaker
100 men will test today I hope you are quite prepared to die Oh, war it's an enemy to all mankind
But only 3 win the Green Beret Looks like we're in for nasty weather The point of war blows my mind
Back at home a young wife waits One eye is taken for an eye War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Her Green Beret has met his fate Oh don't go 'round tonight Induction then destruction
He has died for those oppressed It's bound to take your life Who wants to die, ah, war-huh, good god
Leaving her his last request There's a bad moon on the rise y'all
Put Silver Wings on my son's chest There's a bad moon on the rise What is it good for
Make him one of America's best Absolutely nothing
He'll be a man he'll test one day Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
Have him win the Green Beret What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me it ain't
nothing but a heartbreaker
(War) it's got one friend that's the undertaker

Oh, war, has shattered many a young man’s
dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life
It can only take it away
Oh, war, huh good god y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But lord knows there's got to be a better way
Oh, war, huh good god y'all
What is it good for you tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it
huh good god y'all
What is it good for
Stand up and shout it nothing
