lesson
You may ask the students, a question that is in their mind at that
moment. You may write their answers on the board. (Note: You may try
to group the questions as you write them on the board into two, one
group will be questions that are answerable by a fact and the other
group are those that require more than one information and needs
further thinking).
The following are examples of what you could have written on the board:

GROUP 1
• How old is our teacher?
• Is the vehicle of the Mayor of our city/town/municipality bigger than
the vehicle used by the President of the Philippines?
• How many days are there in December?
• Does the Principal of the school has a post graduate degree?

GROUP 2
• How old are the people residing in our town?
• Do dogs eat more than cats?
• Does it rain more in our country than in Thailand?
• Do math teachers earn more than science teachers?
• How many books do my classmates usually bring to school?
• What is the proportion of Filipino children aged 0 to 5 years who are
underweight or overweight for their age?

and practicing new skills STATISTICS- a collection of methods for planning experiments, obtaining
data, and then analyzing, interpreting and drawing conclusion based on
the data.

2 ASPECTS OF STATISTICS

A. Theoretical- deals with the development, derivation, and proof of

statistical theorems, formulas, rules and laws.
B. Applied- involves the applications of those theorems, rules and
laws to solve rea-world problems.

DATA-are values that are variables can assume.

VARIABLE- a characteristic that is observable or measurable in every unit
of the universe.
TYPES OF VARIABLES
RANDOM VARIABLES- variables whose values are determined by chance.
Qualitative variables- words or codes that represent a class or category.

QUANTITATIVE VARIABLES- are numbers that represent an amount or a

count.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF QUANTITATIVE VARIABLES

A. Discrete – can be assigned values such as 0, 1, 2, 3, … and are said
to be countable.
B. Continuous- can assume all values between any two specific
values like 0.5, 1.2, 4.3, etc.
POPULATION- set of all possible values of a variable
SAMPLE- a subgroup a population

TYPES OF STATISTICS

A. Descriptive Statistics-summarizes or describes the important

characteristic of a known set of data.

B. Inferential Statistics- uses sample data to make inferences about a

population. It consists of generalizing from samples to populations,
performing hypothesis testing, determining relationships among
variables, and making predictions.

Tell the type of variable used in each given. If it is quantitative determine

whether it is discrete or continuous.

LEVEL OF MEASUREMENT

 Nominal level of measurement arises when we have variables that

are categorical and nonnumeric or where the numbers have no
sense of ordering.

 Ordinal level also deals with categorical variables like the nominal
level, but in this level ordering is important, that is the values of the
variable could be ranked.
and practicing new skills
 Interval level tells us that one unit differs by a certain amount of
degree from another unit.

 Ratio level also tells us that one unit has so many times as much of
the property as does another unit. The ratio level possesses a
meaningful (unique and non-arbitrary) absolute, fixed zero point and
allows all arithmetic operations. The existence of the zero point is
the only difference between ratio and interval level of
measurement.

Discuss the keys differentiating the level of measurement and give ample
examples.

Classify each as nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio-level data.
