Who does not know about the Vikings?
The warriors baptised amidst the storm sailed their warships across the open sea. With the invasion of
England, they held the old world in suspense for about 250 years as of the year 793 AD.
However, what does this have to do with the modern Bluetooth communication?

Nevertheless, such a connection exists, as the name is a small homage to the Viking ruler Harald I
Bluetooth Gormson by the developer of the Bluetooth software. This Viking ruler accelerated the Dan-
ish and later the Norwegian Christianisation and the unification of the north. He was considered a very
communicative person.

This technology was developped in Sweden by the company Ericsson and other interest groups in the
year 1998. The designation (blue tooth - engl. Bluetooth) emphasises the high proportion of Scandina-
vian companies involved in the development of the Bluetooth technology (commonly abbreviated as BT).

Basic information

Application of the Bluetooth technology

The Bluetooth technology enables to receive and send wireless voice and data information using the
2.4 GHz frequency band between two or more electrical systems, e.g. mobile radio telephones, PDAs,
PCs, etc. Another typical application of the Bluetooth technology is the combination of the PC with
wireless entry systems such as the mouse and the keyboard. An additional element that enjoys great
popularity is the ability to establish a connection with two different phones (one for business activities,
the other for personal use) at the same time.

Development of the Bluetooth technology

The BT version 1.0 had a lot of errors and demonstrated unthoughtfulness when it was presented for
the first time; the shift towards real use only came about with the version 1.1 (in addition to the cor-
rections, it contained in particular the support for non-cryptic transfers as well as the display of the
signal strength. Subsequently, the AFH support (Adaptive Frequency-Hopped Spread Spectrum) was
implemented in the version 1.2, it improved the co-existence of BT with WiFi (BT allows for adaptive
frequency hopping to avoid channels which it considers impaired and occupied by WiFi in that specific
location), however it did not significantly increase the transmission speed yet allowed the retransmis-
sions of corrupted packets for synchronous (audio) transfers, thus ensuring a higher resistance to
interference.
In addition to many more useful features in the backdrop, the benefit of the version 2.0 is in particular
the three-fold increase in the actual transmission speed (up to 2.1 Mbit/s).

This version will be introduced in the near future. Compared to the current version it is much faster
and is able to use wireless WiFi networks. The highest transmission speed was set to 24 Mbit/s. In
practice, lower values are achieved. At present, this is a major achievement compared to the Bluetoo-
th version 2.1 which offers at the most 3 Mbit/s. Thus, the new Bluetooth version may also be used for
the transfer of large multimedia data such as music and films. The first devices with support for Blue-
tooth 3.0 will arrive on the market no later than within one year.

Basic information

Bluetooth supports both the point-to-point com-

munication as well as the multipoint communica-
tion. A transmitter acts as a control unit (master)
and can simultaneously operate up to 7 sub-sys-
tems (slave). These networks are also known as
the so-called piconets.

speed of up to 64 kbit/s.

An asynchronous transmission is used (ACL

- Asynchronous Connectionless) for the trans-
mission of other data (e.g. audio data). The data
is divided into data packets and after they have
been received, they are re-assembled into one
whole data packet and transferred after the recor-
ding.

A Bluetooth enabled device can participate
in multiple piconets, however it can never be
a master of more than one network. It is techni-
cally possible to reciprocally connect up to eleven
piconets. This is called a diffuse network (scatter-
net). This function has not yet been standardised,
therefore it is currently not used in the automotive
industry.

no sudden loss of connection, but the number of
data packets which are incorrectly transmitted
gradually increases.

Bluetooth piconets have a high degree of pro-

tection against eavesdropping and unauthorised
access to your device.

limits the range to approx. ten metres, implying
a possible eavesdropper must be within this
range. Furthermore, he would have to know the

devices. When establishing the connection, it is
SP81_09 also required to enter a passkey which is only
visible for the direct user.

How to recognise devices that are prepared for the Blue-

tooth communication?

Bluetooth is a name protected by law, which also

has its own graphic symbol.
In most cases, the manufacturers of mobile radio
telephones, PDA devices or consumer electro-
nics use this symbol on their devices to point to
the compatibility of their products with the Blue-
tooth communication protocol.

UHV control unit

The UHV control unit memorises the last three connected mobile radio telephones and the respective
SIM cards (called "mobile phone SIM card combination"). If two different SIM cards are inserted in
one phone, this is called a dual SIM card mobile phone just as if two identical SIM cards are inserted
in two different phones.
If a combination of four SIM cards is connected to the phone, this replaces the combination which was
connected to the UHV unit for the shortest period of time. This means that the UHV unit easily assists
a combination of three SIM cards for a mobile phone, however when using four or more combinations,
the first connection (set-up) must be repeated.

WARNING! Only valid for UHV GSM II

The type of connection also plays a role. If a mobile phone SIM card combination
is connected once via the BluetoothTM interface and another time via the adapter
cable, the UHV unit recognises it as two different mobile radio telephones.

The omnidirectional microphone

is located in the ceiling light of the
vehicle.
The difference in volume between

ger seat is negligible.

When connecting the mobile radio telephone to the UHV unit for the first time, the phonebook is
downloaded, the course can be followed on the dash panel insert. When connecting it repeatedly, the
downloading is performed "in the backdrop". If differences "in the backdrop" are noticed between the
directories in the phone and the UHV unit, the information contained in the UHV unit is updated after
completing the downloading.

Adapter holders for mobile radio telephones

Currently, there are two types of adapters for the holder of the mobile radio telephone. The new adap-
ters are marked with the symbol for the BluetoothTM interface and the superscript "Bluetooth only".
The adapters with this identification are only used for charging the phone, the actual communication
between the phone and the UHV unit is processed via the BluetoothTM interface just as for the tele-
phone preinstallation without adapter. This type of adapter is fitted with a button, the PTT button (push
to talk), in order to activate the voice control, if necessary with an SOS button as a second button,
which does not function however in combination with the UHV unit "High +".

Different types of phone holders

The older type of adapter has only one button Holder with the identification Bluetooth only
– PTT and has no identification "Bluetooth only".
This means that the adapter assists the charging
of the phone, however it does not assist the com-
munication via the BluetoothTM interface. If the
phone is placed in this type of adapter, a possib-
le communication via the Bluetooth interface
between the phone and the UHV unit can be
interrupted and is only processed via the cable
line of the adapter. The most striking consequen-
ce of communication via the cable is the loss of

Both types of adapters described have an antenna input for the phone. If the phone is in the adapter,
then the external antenna on the roof of the vehicle is used when phoning. Thus, the harmful radiation
of the mobile radio telephone is reduced inside the vehicle and the quality of the incoming and outgo-
ing calls is improved.

SP_81_GB.indd 18 1.3.2010 14:17:23

Antenna concept

The antenna is used as an element that captures and amplifies the desired signals in the respective
frequency range. Because each service is sent on a different frequency, there are several modules
required for the reception of each range. For this reason, each frequency range (service offered)
requires a separate antenna.

The GSM antenna is integrated in the roof antenna. The radio signals are received via the individual
antenna modules. These signals are transmitted from the antenna to the final device via a coaxial
cable.
The GSM antenna is a passive and bidirectional antenna (it also serves as a transmitting antenna).

When using the UHV unit Low/High+/GSM II, the HFP Bluetooth profile (Handsfree Profile) is used.
If you do not use an adapter for the mobile radio telephone, the antenna integrated in your phone is
used. Otherwise the external Tri-band antenna on the roof of your vehicle, which is connected to the
adapter of the mobile radio telephone, is used.

Telephone preinstallation GSM II

Telephone preinstallation High +/GSM II

The Škoda vehicles can be equipped with a telephone preinstallation, which carries the designation
GSM ll. This telephone preinstallation is the basis of the hands-free systems with BluetoothTM tech-
nology that are offered in the Škoda vehicles. The BluetoothTM technology is based on the fact that all
data transmissions between the control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone and the mobile
radio telephone, possibly the multimedia system, are only performed using wireless communication.

Function of the telephone preinstallation GSM II:

• The operation on the mobile radio telephone, the combination device as well as the radio/naviga-
tion is possible with the support of the BAP protocol.
• Possibility of switching over to "mute" mode (sound suppression).
• The PTT button, which is located in the bottom part of the phone adapter on the left, is used to
activate the voice control.
• The SOS button, which is located in the bottom part of the phone adapter on the right, does not
function in combination with the UHV unit "High +".
• Possibility of operation using the optional button "mobile phone" on the right of the multi-function
steering wheel - e.g accepting and terminating a call etc. (the function for the selected button "mo-
bile phone" changes depending on the operating mode of the phone; detailed information regard-
ing the functions of the selection button "mobile phone" can be found in the user manual of the
vehicle).
The telephone preinstallation GSM II comes in two versions:
• without holder for mobile radio telephone
• with holder for mobile radio telephone

holder
The telephone preinstallation without holder only permits the communication between the mobile radio
telephone and the UHV device via the BluetoothTM data interface. Therefore, neither the adapter for
the holder of the mobile radio telephone nor the external antenna on the roof of the vehicle is a com-
ponent of this preinstallation.
The communication via the BluetoothTM interface is processed via the hands-free system profile
(HFP - version 1.5 and 1.0). The UHV unit additionally assists the profile for the downloading of the
phonebook PBAP (Phone Book Access Profile), it is an alternative to downloading the phonebook via
HFP. The contact names in the phone will be transferred via the set of characters UTF-8, therefore,
for example cyrillic characters of the Russian alphabet, sinographs of the Chinese alphabet or Czech
diacritics are displayed on the dash panel insert.

The telephone preinstallation without adapter for the mobile radio telephone holder
can be installed in vehicles with left and right-hand drive.

Telephone preinstallation GSM II

Telephone preinstallation with mobile phone holder

The telephone preinstallation with adapter enables the connection of the mobile radio telephone to the
UHV unit via the BluetoothTM interface and at the same time the phone can be placed in the adapter.
The adapter is fixed to the instrument panel using a console so that the driver can follow the display of
the phone as well as operate it if necessary.

The adapter ensures the following functions:

• charging the phone

• connection of the mobile radio telephone to the external antenna of the phone
• diagnostics of the external antenna of the phone
• operating certain functions of the mobile radio telephone by means of the PTT button on this
adapter (the SOS button does not function with this UHV unit)

The external Tri-band antenna is connected to the adapter holder of the mobile radio telephone. The
microphone is located in the ceiling light.

The telephone preinstallation with the adapter holder for the mobile radio telephone
can only be installed in vehicles with left-hand drive for technical reasons.

BluetoothTM with the audio stream function

Support for this profile (A2DP) only for the version LOW/GSM II (up to 52/08). This
version was only installed in the model Superb.

This function allows the sound transmission (music) from the internal player of the mobile radio tel-
ephone, possibly a multimedia system, which must however support the BluetoothTM technology for
music transmission. This transmission is performed via the BluetoothTM interface using the control
unit for operating the mobile radio telephone that can establish and hold two different BluetoothTM
connections. The hands-free profile (HFP) is used for the hands-free functions of the mobile radio
telephone and the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) is used for playing music. The music

Telephone preinstallation GSM IIl

Telephone preinstallation Premium/GSM III

The telephone preinstallation GSM lll offers the customer a highly convenient version of the hands-
free system. This telephone preinstallation, just as the GSM II version, is linked up to the mobile radio
telephone using the BluetoothTM technology. The GSM II version uses the BluetoothTM technology
with the so-called rSAP profile.

The telephone preinstallation GSM IIl only enables the connection of mobile radio
telephones which support the BluetoothTM technology using the rSAP profile.

BluetoothTM with rSAP profile

The BluetoothTM technology, which uses the rSAP profile, enables the reading of the SIM cards of the mo-
bile radio telephones. The control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone, which uses BluetoothTM
with rSAP, has therefore access to the data on the SIM card and the mobile radio telephone.
Thanks to this wireless connection, which uses the rSAP profile, there is no longer any need to use the
adapter holder of the mobile radio telephone. Thus, the mobile radio telephone can be placed anywhere
inside the vehicle (for example, in the luggage compartment).
In order for the control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone to process the wireless data transmis-
sion from the SIM card and the mobile radio telephone, its successful connection (pairing) extends to the
mobile radio telephone.
Connection procedure:
• Ignition switched on.
• Search for the respective mobile radio telephone using the multi-function steering wheel and select it
in the information display of the dash panel insert (the phone must have an activated BluetoothTM +
activated BT-visibility and at the same time an rSAP profile - remote SIM mode).
• Enter the six-digit PIN of the control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone, which is shown in
the information display of the dash panel insert, in the mobile radio telephone.
• If required, enter the PIN of the SIM card in the information display of the dash panel insert (for the first
so-called pairing, it can only be entered in the information display of the dash panel insert because
only here the choice can be made whether the PIN should be stored or not).
• The instructions of the mobile radio telephone must be followed in order to further perform the login of
the mobile radio telephone in the operating unit of the mobile radio telephone.
• After the connection, the identification data is read from the SIM card and the phonebook is download-
ed in the control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone, whereby the mobile radio telephone logs
off from the GSM network, because the further communication with the GSM network is only ensured
by the control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone; only the BluetoothTM interface remains
active in the mobile radio telephone while the rest of the menu is blocked. You can only chose to sepa-
rate it from the control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone or disconnect the BluetoothTM
connection. In this case, the control unit of the mobile radio telephone logs off from the GSM network
while the mobile radio telephone logs in again.

For the automatic connection of the mobile radio telephone to the control unit for operating the mobile
radio telephone, it is required to carry out the authorisation

The control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone can be diagnosed and it communicates with the
other respective control units via the CAN bus databuses. It is located under the front passenger seat just
as the GSM ll version.
The external Tri-band antenna is connected to the control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone.
The microphone is located in the ceiling light.

Function of the telephone preinstallation GSM IIl:
• Convenience operation of the functions for the mobile radio telephone by means of the radio, pos-
sibly the radio navigation system, which assists the communication via the BAP protocol.
• Convenience operation of the functions for the mobile radio telephone using the buttons of the
multi-function steering wheel (the description of the functions of the buttons for the multi-function
steering wheel can be found in the user manual of the vehicle).
• Display of information from the mobile radio telephone on the information display of the dash panel
insert and on the display of the radio or radio navigation system.
• Possibility of displaying the SMS on the information display of the dash panel insert.
• Possibility of switching over to "mute" mode (sound suppression).
• Voice control of the mobile radio telephone
• The control unit for operating the mobile radio telephone fulfills the functions of the classic hands-

Possibilities of the mobile phone operation

Operation by means of the dash panel insert

The dash panel insert assists the following functions:
• Tracking the first download of the directories
• Display of the phonebook with the possibility of the choice of contact
• Display of the calling list with the possibility of the choice of contact
• Accepting an incoming call
• Terminating a current call
• Accepting or rejecting a call on the line

The functions of the UHV unit are only assisted by the dash panel insert High line
with Maxi DOT display.

Operation by means of the multi-function steering wheel

In the phone version, the multi-function steering wheel (MFSW) is fitted with two buttons for operating
the UHV unit. The first one is the PTT button, which is used to activate the voice control, similar as on
the adapter. The second one is the HOOK button which is marked with the telephone symbol.

Possibilities of the mobile phone operation

Operation by means of the radio or navigation system

The radio or navigation system assists the following functions:
• Display of the phonebook with the possibility of dialing a contact*
• Display of the calling list with the possibility of dialing a contact
• Display of the operator, the signal strength and the name or type of the phone
• Quick search in the phonebook after entering the first letter of the contact
• Setting of the six most frequently used contacts on the main screen for quick dialing
• Accepting an incoming call
• Terminating a current call
• Accepting or rejecting a call on the line
• Dialing a phone number on the keypad of the contact display for the radio or the navigation (the
input of the DTMF tones on the UHV unit GSM ll during an ongoing call is not assisted, the version
with UHV GSM lll assists this function)
• Restoring the factory setting of the UHV unit
• Switching off the microphone in the inside of the vehicle
* The display of the phonebook is functionally different between the radio and navigation system.
Whereas on the radio, when the phonebook and its individual positions are displayed, a real-time
communication proceeds with the UHV unit, during which the navigation system stores a copy of the
phonebook in the internal memory and does not communicate with the UHV unit when scrowling
through the directory. As a result, possible changes made in the phonebook (during the connection of
the phone with the UHV unit) appear in the navigation system with a delay as compared to the radio.

phonebook available". The illustration of the phonebook on the Maxi DOT display in the dash panel
insert proceeds in the same way as on the radio.

The functions of the UHV control unit are only available on a radio or navigation
system with the assistance of the communication via BAP protocol using the UHV
unit.

Voice control of the mobile radio telephone

The voice control of the phone is activated by the PTT button on the multi-function steering wheel
or on the phone holder. After the signal sounds, spoken commands can be given. The time during
which the system is ready to accept and carry out spoken commands, is called dialogue. The system
responds with audible feedback and reports any possible further steps. The dialogue may be started
or terminated at any time by pressing the PTT button on the multi-function steering wheel or on the
holder. The dialogue is automatically terminated after carrying out an operation, for example when
deleting a name in the phonebook. When a call is received, the dialogue is immediately terminated so
that the call can be accepted. If the system does not detect the voice command, the system answers
with the question "Pardon?" and thus making it possible to set a new task. After the 2nd incorrect at-
tempt, the system repeats the instructions for help. After the 3rd incorrect attempt, the answer "Termi-
nate" follows and the dialogue is closed.

Networking between Bluetooth devices

These devices must log onto the Bluetooth network so that the mobile radio telephone and the other
devices can be operated together with the mobile phone preinstallation. One also says: "The devices
must be networked".

This procedure involves the following part steps:

• Activation of the Bluetooth interface (interface) in the devices involved

• Visibility of the devices for the networking process
• Connecting the devices involved by entering the key data

Before the first and the subsequent connections, independent of the version of the mobile phone pre-
installation, the following conditions must always be met:
• The vehicle is stationary.
• The ignition key is inserted.
• The ignition is switched on.

Activation of the Bluetooth interface (interface) on the mobile radio

telephone
Although electronic devices such as mobile radio telephones, PDA, etc. do not necessarily communi-
cate only via Bluetooth data, but also via other interfaces, which include for example USB, the Blue-
tooth interface must normally be switched on in these devices. This is performed via the setup menu
of the device to be connected.

First connection via Bluetooth

When connecting the mobile radio telephone, the passkey, which ensures the authorisation to connect
the device to the mobile phone preinstallation, is transmitted. This means that the mobile phone prein-
stallation checks if an authorised device tries to log onto the network. The passkey is generated by the
mobile phone preinstallation and is shown on the display of the dash panel insert (Premium).
The connection procedure between the mobile radio telephone and the mobile phone preinstallation
can take up to three minutes. If the mobile phone preinstallation should assume the function of the
connected mobile radio telephone in the mobile network (only with regard to the telephone preinstalla-
tion "Premium"), it is necessary to transfer the personal identification number (PIN) into the mobile
phone preinstallation.

The following text describes as an example how to connect the Nokia 3109 phone to the mo-
bile radio telephone preinstallations "High +" and "Premium" for the first time.

A 16-digit code, which is divided into 4 number
blocks of four digits, is now shown on the display of
the dash panel insert. The mobile radio telephone
requests from you to enter and confirm the code
on the display. You have 30 seconds to do so.

If the entry has been completed successfully

within this period of time, the mobile radio tele-

established.

preinstallation "High +", here as well it can be
determined whether the connection is establis-
hed in the future once the mobile radio telephone
is within range of the operational mobile radio
telephone preinstallation. After switching on the
ignition, the mobile phone preinstallation "Premi-

range.
SP81_54

The mobile phone preinstallation "Premium" is

able to read the phonebook on the SIM card of
the mobile phone as well as on the memory of
the phone and to store the data itself. The user
must set this on the mobile phone preinstallati-
on. The mobile radio telephone informs about
this procedure with the message "External SIM
access". This procedure is performed automa-
tically each time you establish a connection
between the mobile radio telephone and the
mobile radio telephone preinstallation. The
mobile phone preinstallation can reciprocally

phonebooks.

First connection via Bluetooth

The mobile phone preinstallation "Premium" al-

lows you to create user profiles for the devices
which are connected via the Bluetooth interface.
They are created using the option of the phone
menu "New user". The profile of the user as-
signs the user name, which is stored along with
the passkey (code) used for the connection, to
the registered Bluetooth device. The list of all the
devices that were connected to the mobile phone
preinstallation "Premium" and for which a profile
is stored, is displayed in the menu "User." In this
way the Bluetooth device can also be connected

is in sleep mode (sleep mode) for the length of time it is used in the vehicle. In this
mode, only the control function of the mobile radio telephone is enabled.
First the mobile radio telephone logs off from the mobile network before the func-
tion is assumed by the mobile phone preinstallation. Only then the mobile phone
preinstallation can log on again with the data of the SIM card instead of the mobile
radio telephone, because the system does not allow two logins with the same SIM
identification in the GSM network.

Mobile radio telephones without Bluetooth are not supported by the mobile phone
preinstallation "Premium" even when docking with the adapter. They cannot be
used in this configuration.

If the mobile radio telephone is only operated after the ignition has been switched
on, the connection procedure must be activated manually.

In order to use the hands-free system in this way,
the Bluetooth devices involved must support
the HFP protocol. Thus, calls can be accepted,
terminated or rejected. There is also the possibil-
ity of receiving calls and leading conversations in
the so-called "Privacy Mode" (privacy mode). The
sound is only played via the headphones and is
not heard through the loudspeakers of the vehi-
cle. When operating the headset, first the con-

the mobile phone preinstallation is interrupted
and then the Bluetooth connection between the
mobile radio telephone and the headset is estab-

If the passkey (code) was stored in the login directory of the device when it was connected for the first
time and the function for establishing a connection automatically was activated in the operating menu,
there is no need to re-connect it manually, because the connection is automatically established.

If the device is again within the reception range or if the ignition or the device is switched on again and
the function "establish connection automatically" was not activated, it is necessary once more to log
onto the Bluetooth network of the mobile phone preinstallation when connecting the next time.

Disconnecting the mobile radio telephone from the control unit can be done in several ways:

1) choose "Disconnect" (End) in the phone menu

2) by turning off the Bluetooth communication in the phone
3) by switching off the ignition and removing the key from the ignition lock
4) by increasing the distance of the phone to the vehicle
