Venepuncture and Cannulation Training Programme 2020

How do I complete the programme?


There are three parts to this programme that the participant must complete in sequence, as follows:
1. Theoretical component
2. Practical clinical skill workshop
3. Competency assessment

How is this programme delivered?


This programme is delivered using a blended learning approach (7.8 hours).

What does that mean?


You complete the identified e-learning modules on HSELanD and then attend for a practical clinical
skill workshop that is socially distant.

1. Theoretical component
This is completed on HSELanD. There are 7 modules that must be completed and are listed on
HSELand as follows:
1. Hand hygiene for HSE Clinical staff
2. ANTT Aseptic Non Touch Technique
3. Choosing a vein for venepuncture or peripheral intravenous cannulation (PIVC)
4. Performing venepuncture on an adult
5. Performing venepuncture on an adult assessment
6. Performing Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation (PIVC) on an adult
7. Performing PIVC on an adult assessment

When you have completed all 7 of the modules you should obtain 4 certificates of completion.
Below are the 5 items that are required before you can attend the practical workshop.

1. ANTT
2. Hand Hygiene
3. Performing venepuncture on an adult
4. Performing peripheral intravenous cannulation (PIVC) on an adult
5. Administration of IV medications copy of competency assessment (MMUH or equivalent)

You must email a copy of your certificates to the nurse tutor prior to attending the clinical skills
workshop at the latest 48 hours prior to the commencement of the workshop.

Clinical Skill Workshop


Participants will then attend a 4 hour clinical skills workshop in the CNE followed by an assessment
of knowledge. This will take place from 09:00-13:00hrs in Classroom 1 in the Centre for Nurse
Education.
You must read the accompanying pre-learning workbook prior to attending the practical clinical skill
workshop. This contains complimentary information specific to the Mater hospital, e.g., equipment
used and relevant policies. The assessment of knowledge is a 30 minute 15 short answer question
examination. Participants must achieve 80% for successful completion.

2. Competency Assessment
Following completion of the theoretical component, practical clinical skill workshop and successful
completion of the assessment of knowledge, participants will be given a Venepuncture and
Cannulation Skills Assessment tool. This competency assessment will occur in the clinical
environment within a designated 12 week period.

Due to social distancing the following must be adhered to:


 Participants must book to attend the practical clinical skills workshop by emailing Margaret
Hogan at mhogan@mater.ie
 If you are unable to attend a booked practical clinical skills workshop for any reason please
cancel your booking by emailing mhogan@mater.ie
 Participants that have not emailed a copy of the required certificates by 48hours prior to the
commencement of the workshop to the nurse tutor will have their booking cancelled.
 Participants who feel unwell or have been tested for Covid 19 but have not received their
results are not permitted to attend the practical workshop. Please inform mhogan@mater.ie
and your booking can be rescheduled.
