1. Prepare a chart differentiating between verbal and nonverbal 2, 3, 4

communication, covering the following points:

a. Aspects involved in nonverbal and verbal communication

b. Types of verbal and nonverbal communication to avoid

2. Construct a genogram to identify patterns within your family 13

history for the past three generations.

3. Review your own lifestyle and health practices. Make a list of your 15

strengths, weaknesses, and how you might address any apparent risk

factors.

Group Assignments Learning Objective(s)

1. Divide the class into three groups and assign each group one of the 1,2

following three phases of an interview:

a. Introductory Phase

b. Working Phase

c. Summary and Closing Phase

Ask the students to role-play a nurse–client interaction for each of the

three phases. Allow the other groups to note the verbal and nonverbal

aspects used.
2. Divide the class into groups and ask students to role-play nurse– 7

client interaction to obtain a health history in the following situations:

a. An anxious client

b. An angry client

c. A depressed client

d. A manipulative client

3. Distribute printouts with the following components of health 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14

history:

a. Biographical data

b. Reasons for seeking health care

c. History of present health concern

d. Past health history

e. Family health history

f. Review of systems for current health problems

Then, divide the class into two groups and ask one group to prepare

questions and the other group to list information related to the points

in the health history. Ask two volunteers from each group to role-play

a nurse–client scenario using the prepared questions and information

bank.
