The most widely held view of ageing is that it is just a part of the

life cycle. That is a progressive physiological cycle leading to

senescence, or a decline of biological functions and of the bodies
ability to adapt to metabolic stress. Ageing is also seen as a wide
ranging event being a physical process, a psychological one and a
social one. In today's world older people is risk to many disease,
they had a weak immune system to protect their self. They had a lot of
insecurities when they getting older, they also experience anxiety and
depression because of getting older. Some of older people here in
Philippines are optimistic to their health, even though they
experience pain they just take a nap and rest, instead of going to
clinic and had a checkup.

This study is anchored on SISTER CALISTA ROY ADAPTATION MODEL. The

Adaptation theory of Sister Callista Roy was developed in 1976. In her
theory, Sister Callista Roy’s model sees the individual as a set of
interrelated systems that maintain a balance between these various
stimuli. In this theory we have the metaparadigm wherein it includes
the person, health, environment and nursing. In the concept of person,
Roy defines human as holistic beings that are constantly interacting
with their environment. They use a system of adaptation, both innate
and acquired, to respond to the environment stimuli they experience.
Human systems can be individuals or groups such as families,
organization, and the whole global community. Roy believes that there
is a common purposefulness to human existence, which includes both
unity and diversity. Furthermore, Roy defines health as the state
where humans can continually adapt stimuli, because illness is a part
of life, health is the result of a process where health and illness
coexist. In the concept of environment she defines it as the stimuli
or input that requires a person to adapt. These stimuli can be
positive or negative, big or small. Roy categorized these stimuli as
focal, contextual and residual. Focal stimulus is that which confronts
the human system, and requires most of the person’s attention.
Contextual stimuli are characterized as the rest of the stimuli that
present with the focal stimuli and contribute to its effect. Residual
stimuli are the additional environment factors present within the
situation but whose effects are unclear. This includes previous
experiences with certain stimuli. In the concept of nursing, nurses
are facilitators of adaptation. They assess the patient’s behaviors
for adaptation, promote positive adaptation by enhancing environment
interactions and by helping patients to react positively to stimuli,
they are eliminating ineffective coping mechanisms and eventually
leading to better outcomes.

Therefore, this study would like to focus on the concept of health

because as we grow older we adapt different health illnesses. Older
adult’s health is very crucial at their age. In order to achieve a
peak health a person should free from injury and disease. Although
treating an illness does involve physiological approach, we also feel
that it should include much more. Furthermore, this should include
treating and evaluating not only a person’s physical health but also
their mental and spiritual health as well. Because without treating
all aspects of the healing process, optimal health cannot be achieved
and it will affect their perceptions on treatment and hospitalization.
