The chapter started by demonstrating the sharp differences between a weak

example and a thorough, specific one that could contributes to an article’s message. The
examples given in the textbook have a variety of traits. From a TV purchase promotion
which we as readers can easily understands the detailed content, to a long but interesting
description of a cat’s behavior that can immerse the readers to the writer’s vision. Extending
from the aspect of focusing on few examples, the textbook provided a plotted, action-driven
paragraph that delineates a car accident. In the paragraph, it portrayed vivid image of the
incident itself as well as subtle emotions lying within the lines, but we do not feel
unnecessary to any parts, without the descriptions, we will not be able to grasp the
complete experience which therefore led to the satisfaction after reading it.

With many examples provided, we are able to acknowledge the importance of

exemplification and its usage. We, as storytellers, are required to analyze our material in the
perspective of the readers to determine the depth of our description, the diversity of the
examples, and the length of our paragraph.

In the textbook, we are provided with some tips to develop our essay. Like other
types of writing, a thesis paragraph, and several body paragraphs are required. It is crucial
that we put in a topic sentence before getting into the details of our material. We should
also choose our examples carefully, the purpose we are trying to achieve should be clear
from the beginning, the examples should all supports one main idea and assist the readers
to understand your value or story.

Quotes:
“Examples are essential in essays whose main purpose is evaluation—that is, essays that
assert the advantages, benefits, or worth(or conversely, the disadvantages or negative
aspects) of a particular place, person, idea, or thing. P.205
“To illustrate your claim, you would select those cases that most obviously show gross or
ridiculous expenditures rather than asking your readers to consider some unnecessary but
minor expenses.” P.206

“Present these examples in specific vivid language, once your readers begin to “see” that
field covered with blood and bruised bodies, you’ll have less trouble convincing them that
your point of view is accurate.” P.207

Questions:
1. How can the person analyze and eventually determine how detailed the material
should be described.?
The author must understand the purpose clearly. In order to convince the readers to
buy a certain product, we have to explain the advantages of its usage in detail and
not emphasizing on small components.

2. What is the purpose of storytelling examples and its suitable usage?

Storytelling might seem to be a choice a material that has long paragraph length. It is
best to convince readers about a moral in life or a importance of certain objects. In
the textbook, the story given is an accident about how a seatbelt saves life. As
readers, we are able to immerse ourselves in the story as well as understanding the
moral of it.

3. How to ensure your examples are specific enough?

We are able to convey our message with supported events. If you tend to describe a
meal, you ought to portray the detail instead of your own thoughts. Describe the
texture, the smell, the subtle sensory that you experienced. Only when doing that,
the readers can relive what you have been through and be persuaded by it.
