Unlocking Words Difficulty:

Before we proceed to our lesson, let us differentiate the following words that we may
encounter in our discussion:
Whole Numbers {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.....}
Counting Numbers {1, 2, ,3, 4, 5, 6......}
Odd numbers {1, 3, 5, 7, 9 ......}
Even numbers {2, 4, 6, 8, 10 .....}
Prime numbers {2, 3, 5, 7, 11.....}
Composite numbers {4, 6, 8, 9, 10.....}

Discussion:Set - is a group or collection of objects. It is named using CAPITAL letter. Each object in
a set is called an element of a set.
Element
∈ – the symbol used for element. ∉ – the symbol used for not an element.
Example 1: Set of even numbers from 1 to 7
A = { 2, 4, 6}
2, 4, 6 are called elements of a given set.
2∈A 3∉A 6∈A 5∉A
Example 2: Set of primary colors
B = { yellow, red, blue}
Yellow, red, blue are called elements of a given set.
Well-defined set, means it must be absolutely clear that which object belongs to the set
and which does not.
Example:
1. A = { set of prime numbers} – Well-defined set
2. B = { set of favorite color} – Not
Empty or Null set – a set with no members or elements. It is denoted by the symbol { } for
empty set or ∅ for null set.
Example 1: A = {set of triangles with 4 sides}
Example 2: B = {set of composite numbers from 1 to 3}
Cardinality of a set - is the number of elements or members in a given set. It is denoted
by the symbol n. “Cardinality of a set A” is wriiten as n(A).
Example 1: Set of odd numbers from 1-10
A = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} n(A) = 5
Example 2: Set of primary colors
A = {red, yellow, blue} n(A) = 3
Activity:
Answer the following:
1. List down the elements of the following statements.
a. Set of odd numbers from 1 to 13
b. Set of prime numbers from 6 to 14
2. Fill in the blank with ∈ or ∉
A = prime numbers
B = composite numbers
C = counting numbers
2 ___ A 6 ___B 4 __ C
7 ___ B 1 ___C 1 __ A
3. Identify the cardinality of each sets.
a. A = { 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12}
b. C = { lion, tiger, monkey, fish}
