2 Release information
Ansys releases a new major version of the Granta MI software every 6 months. Each release delivers
new features, bug fixes, and improvements to quality, performance, and usability. All Granta MI
releases are distributed as a full product installation package and are installed in the same way
whether you are installing the product for the first time or upgrading an existing installation. All
Granta MI releases are cumulative, that is, they include all changes, enhancements, and bug fixes
released to date in previous releases.
Upgrading the Granta MI software does not make any changes to the data stored in Granta MI.

2.1 System requirements for this release

For full software and hardware requirements, see the Granta MI 2023 R1 System Requirements
document.
Note that, at this release:
• Window Server 2012 R2 is no longer a supported Granta MI application server platform
• Microsoft SQL Server 2012 is no longer a supported data platform for Granta MI

2.2 Upgrade advice

See Section 7, Upgrade considerations, for advice for customers upgrading from earlier Granta MI
releases.

2.3 Licensing
Monthly Active User (MAU) licensing for Granta MI Release 2023 R1 is managed with Ansys License
Manager Release 2023 R1. See the document Ansys License Manager Server Hardware and Network
Requirements for information on software and hardware requirements for Ansys license servers.
Customers who purchased a license of Granta MI, or renewed maintenance, before December 2019,
may still be using the legacy Granta ‘named user’ licensing model. These customers can still
download Granta MI Enterprise software through My Granta for this release and use their existing
16-character license key, and do not need Ansys License Manager.
However, note that 2023 R1 is the last Granta MI release that supports the old license model. The
Monthly Active User licensing model for Granta MI was introduced in January 2020 with a three-
phased plan for transitioning customers from the old, named user model:
• Phase 1 – Jan 2020 - All new Paid-Up licenses using MAU model
• Phase 2 – Jan 2021 - All new lease licenses using MAU model
• Phase 3 – Jan 2022 - All new maintenance licenses using MAU model
We are now at the end of the last phase. For all future Granta MI releases, any customers who are
currently using the legacy Granta named user licensing model will need to transition to the MAU
licensing model, and start using Ansys License Manager.

4 What’s new in this release?

This section details new features, significant improvements, and important changes delivered in
Granta MI 2023 R1.

4.1 MI Ansys Material Calibration

In this release of the MI Ansys Material Calibration App, users can estimate initial coefficient values
for more complex models with the new AI-driven Initialize feature, including the Three Network
Model and Arruda-Boyce.

4.2 Support for cross-database Tabular data links

Tabular Attributes can be used to collate data stored in multiple Tables into a table on a single
datasheet.
Previously, the linked data could only come from Tables in the same database. Now, Tabular
Attributes can include linked data from a different database.

4.3 New AM data importer for EOS machines

The Additive Manufacturing Data Integration tool can now be used to import build data from EOS
machines into Granta MI via the EOSCONNECT web API (v6.1).
This out-of-the-box solution for EOS machines extends the existing support for SLM®280, Concept
Laser M2, and Renishaw AM250 machines.

4.4 Support for Azure SQL Database

Granta MI data can now be stored in Azure SQL Database, making it easier to deploy Granta MI with
your existing Azure Cloud subscription.
All Granta MI databases are now provided in two different backup file formats:
• .bak files, for Microsoft SQL Server
• .bacpac files, for Azure SQL Database

Granta MI 2023 R1 Release Notes

4.5 One MI Home page changes

In this release, we have made changes to the way that One MI home pages are defined, to enable
customers to make more flexible, customized One MI home pages for different groups of Granta MI
users.
• Home page access based on membership of User Manager Roles, Groups, and Projects.
Home pages can now be defined for different groups of users based on user membership of
Roles, Groups, and Projects defined in User Manager. This extends the existing role-based
access configuration options, where access depends on a user’s system privileges in Granta
MI (Admin, Write, Read, etc.).
• Access to multiple home pages via the Apps menu.
Individual home pages can now be added to the Apps menu, making it easy for users to
switch between different home pages, for example, their default system login home page,
and home pages for different Teams or Projects they are working with.
• Bookmarkable home pages.
Home pages are now individually-addressable via the application URL, for quick and easy
access. For example:
http://my.mi.server/grantami/#/home-page;root=MetalsGroupHomePage
• New content styling options.
We have extended the available styling options for home page content, allowing buttons and
text to be styled with CSS-like properties specifying colors, borders, margins, padding, text
styles, backgrounds, and hover effects.
• Easier management of home page JSON configuration settings. Home page content, layout,
and access management settings are now defined in a single JSON setting, settings.home-
page-config.json, instead of in 3 separate JSON settings.
• Reusable components. To make it easier for Team and Project home pages to be managed
and maintained by different Admin users, they can be defined as components that are stored
in separate JSON settings, and referenced in the main home page configuration.
Because we have made extensive changes to the way that home pages are defined, all existing One
MI home pages used in Granta MI version 2022 R2 or earlier must be upgraded to make them
compatible with the new configuration format. A Home Page Upgrade wizard is provided to make
this easier, and can be accessed from a link on the default One MI Home Page installed when you
upgrade the software to version 2023 R1.
Information on how to define new-style home pages with all the new styling and access management
features is provided in the One MI Home application help: go to the default home page, and then
click the Help icon in the top right corner.

4.6 MI Explore enhancements

4.6.1 Support for record version control
In version-controlled Tables, all users can now see the version number and version history for
Released records. Users with Write privileges and higher can now see Unreleased records as well as
Released versions, and can release, revert, and withdraw records.
Access to Unreleased records, and to release, revert, and withdraw functionality, depends on a new
application ‘Viewing Mode’, and on the user’s privileges.

Record version state Availability in MI Explore

Unreleased • Not visible to Read users.

• Visible to Write users in Edit Mode.
• Can be edited by Write users.

Released • Visible to all users in Read Mode.

• Visible in Edit Mode unless there is a newer Unreleased
version, in which case you won’t see the Released version, only
the Unreleased version.
• Cannot be edited by any user.

Superseded • Not visible to any users, in any viewing mode.

Withdrawn

Users with Write+ roles can switch between Edit Mode and Read Mode, allowing them to preview
what Read users will see in the data view:
• In Edit Mode, Unreleased and Released records are visible, making it possible to compare
different versions of the same record. Data edit and record management features (Release,
Revert, and Withdraw) are available.
• In Read Mode, only Released records are visible and no record management or data edit
features are available (even if editing is enabled in the data view configuration). This is the
same view of the data that Read users see.
Note that availability of version-controlled records in a data view is also dependent on the access
control settings on the record, e.g. a user with read privileges may still not be able to view a Released
record if they do not have the access control permissions to do so.

4.6.2 Support for Display Names

The Display Names feature introduced in Granta MI 2022 R2 allowed alternative names to be defined
for a range of schema items including Attributes, Layouts, and Tables, and shown in the MI Viewer
user interface instead of the underlying object name.
In 2023 R1, support for Display Names is extended to the MI Explore application. Where Display
Names are defined for schema objects, Explore users will now see these in datasheets and searches.
For more information about Display Names, see the MI Admin help or the Granta MI Schema Guide.

Granta MI 2023 R1 Release Notes

4.6.3 New Functional data edit capability

Functional data can now be edited in the Explore application. Users can edit data values directly, and
add/remove data points and data series.

4.6.4 Other general enhancements

• For Attributes that have Meta-attributes defined, the > Show/Hide metadata control on
datasheets no longer appears if none of the Meta-attributes have any data (only applies in
data views where empty attributes are hidden i.e. ‘Show empty attributes’=Hide)
• When there is only one Favorites List to which a user can add records, the list is now
automatically pre-selected in the Add to Favorites list dialog when it opens.

Granta MI 2023 R1 Release Notes

4.7 Authentication and user management enhancements

4.7.1 Easier OpenID Connect authentication configuration
Customers using OpenID Connect (OIDC) for Granta MI user authentication can now use a new
configuration tool to configure the required settings to establish the connection between MI Server
and MI applications, and their Identity Provider.
Previously, users needed to use several different PowerShell cmdlets to do this configuration. The
new ‘one-stop’ configuration tool presents all configuration settings in a single UI, with required
settings, optional settings, and default values clearly identified, making the job of OIDC auth setup
more manageable for Granta MI administrators who may not have in-depth knowledge of how
OAuth and OIDC work.
The new tool can be accessed from the MI Server Connection tool after selecting OpenID Connect
Authentication/User Manager Authorization as the MI system security mode:

Granta MI 2023 R1 Release Notes

4.7.2 New standalone User Manager application

A new, standalone User Manager web application is available. Customers who have experienced
problems logging into the integrated One MI User Manager app when using header-based
authentication, or OpenID Connect authentication, can now use this new standalone User Manager
application instead of the integrated One MI app.
The standalone User Manager application has all the same features and functionality of the One MI
User Manager app, but integrates directly with the User Manager backend in MI Server, with no
dependency on the Service Layer. This makes it possible to run User Manager independently of the
Service Layer, so MI administrators can check User Manager is set up correctly, add users and groups,
and check user authentication is working correctly, before the Service Layer, MI Viewer, or One MI
web applications are even installed.
To access the Standalone User Manager application, enter the application URL in a browser. To find
the URL for your Granta MI deployment:
• Where Windows Authentication or User Manager authentication are used, you can obtain
the URL from the ServiceURL parameters under System Security Settings in the MI Server
Connection tool, and remove the '/api' part. For example, in the case shown below, you
should access User Manager at https://my.server.name:9000

• Where OpenID Connect authentication is used, you can find the FQDN and port in User
Manager configuration under MI Server Connection -> System Security Settings -> OIDC
Configuration. For example, in the example below you would access User Manager
at https://host.domain.de:9000

Granta MI 2023 R1 Release Notes

4.8 MI Service Layer changes

This Service Layer release includes a new Service Layer Interface Version – 22/04, with
enhancements to the Browse, DataImport, and DataExport services, and extensions to the
NamedRecord schema type. For details, see the Granta MI Service Layer Revisions document.
There has also been a change to the structure of MIServiceLayerClientInterface.dll. Customers who
are using our API using this DLL should refer to the Granta MI Service Layer Revisions document and
the Granta MI Service Layer API Guide for more information.

4.9 General usability improvements

This section highlights some general usability improvements delivered in this release in response to
customer requests.
• MI Viewer home pages can now refer to Search Masks, Search Templates, and Tables by
GUID as well as by identity.
• Released date is now available as a reportable record property for version-controlled records
and can now be included in MI Viewer Comparison Tables reports, and in Excel templates
and exported workbooks.
• We have made the UI for sharing datasheet links in MI Viewer more intuitive. For Read users,
the Bookmark datasheet menu option is replaced by a Copy record URL to clipboard option
which copies the record URL directly, without opening a separate page in MI Viewer. For
Admin users, the page that opens on clicking the datasheet Copy record URL to clipboard
option is now called Copy URL to clipboard and not ‘Switchboard’, and now includes copy
button rather than requiring the user to right-click to copy.
• In MI Viewer text searches, Tabular linking values are now searched as well as local tabular
data.
• The Attribute Default Threshold Type can now be set as blank in MI Admin. When an
Attribute with no value for Default Threshold type is added as a search criteria in MI Viewer,
it will not be used in the search unless the user sets a threshold value explicitly. This ensures
that users don’t inadvertently use a search threshold they don’t want in a search, for
example, when adding multiple Attributes to a search with a Search Template.
• It is now possible to specify an alternative location for file uploads in the MI Data Flow web
service by editing the FileUploadsDirectory key in the application web.config file, for
example, where space is short on the drive where Granta MI web applications are installed.
• The format in which MI Viewer search projects are saved has changed. Saved search projects
created in earlier Granta MI releases cannot be run in version 2023 R1 or later.

7 Upgrade considerations

7.1 Migration to the latest One MI apps

Customers on older releases of Granta MI who are using the standalone MI Explore and MI Workflow
Manager applications should be aware that these applications have been superseded by new,
integrated apps delivered by, and accessed from within, the One MI web application.
One MI provides a ‘Granta MI home page’ and a single, streamlined workspace for integrated Granta
MI enterprise web applications including new Explore and Data Flow Manager apps. We encourage
users to migrate to the newer, integrated One MI apps, and to uninstall the legacy, standalone
applications when practical.

MI Explore
To ensure business continuity, any existing standalone MI Explore application will not be
automatically upgraded or uninstalled when upgrading your Granta MI installation to 2023 R1, and
your existing MI Explore application will continue to work with the 2023 R1 Granta MI application
server software.
Customers using MI BoM Analyzer v3 will need to retain ‘standalone’ MI Explore, as interoperability
with MI BoM Analyzer is not yet available in the integrated Explore app.

MI Workflow Manager
MI Data Flow is the new name for MI:Workflow from Release 2021 R2 onwards.
MI:Workflow v1 is no longer supported. Customers who are still using MI:Workflow v1 should
migrate to MI Data Flow 2023 R1 as soon as possible following the instructions provided in the MI
Data Flow Configuration Guide. Any users still using the v1 MI:Workflow Designer or standalone
MI:Workflow Manager applications should migrate to using the MI Data Flow tools in the 2023 R1
software.

7.2 Report jobs created in Granta MI 2020 R1 or earlier

Analysis (custom) report and Excel Comparison Table report jobs created in MI version 2020 R1 or
earlier cannot be run in Granta MI 2023 R1. They will still be viewable in the Job Queue page, and
users can still download the results, but resubmitting jobs created in these older MI versions will not
work. Also, any scheduled jobs which have not run prior to upgrade will fail when they are executed.
Jobs created in version 2020 R2 or later can be run/re-run in version 2023 R1 with no special action
required.

8 Known issues

8.1 Exporting tabular data with functional data columns via MI Service
Layer
A request to the MI Service Layer’s DataExport service will fail if the data exported contains a Tabular
attribute with a functional column. This issue only affects older APIs (17/09 and earlier). If this issue
affects you, we recommend upgrading your code to use the latest API version. If you have a Python
Scripting Toolkit (STK) script that experiences this issue, we recommend updating to use the latest
version of the Python STK.
