PROJECT: RIVERSIDE ACADEMY

CONSTRUCTION AND LAUNCH OF AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

Riverside International School

Monday, May 29, 2023

EXECUTIVE SUMMERY

The focus of this project proposal is laid down in a way, to show an overall picture of its
exact aim and purpose in the following generalized manner.
It is a very well known fact that, young men and women who had received up-to-date,
advanced and relevant training are the foundation for technological as well as social
development of any country, the two priorities for its economical growth. Nearly a decade
has passed, since Ethiopia has begun determined strides toward achieving a sustained
development. In this effort-requiring endeavor, the main actors as well as the nation had
come to understand the roll that educational superiority can play, in order to triumph over
insufficiency. This is exactly, what the project is designed to realize: educational
excellence.
The project aims at establishing and launching an educational institution devoted to high
standards and quality of education. This academy is designed to encompass Pre School,
Elementary and Secondary schools all in one spacious premise with a yearly enrollment
capacity of 500 students.
The academy is planning to create an ever-memorable monument in the Ethiopian schools
educational history, by modernizing and excelling the teaching - learning process at all levels
of primary and secondary education, and thus became one of the leading transformation
agents who will manifest a prosperous future Ethiopia.
Background
The next portion of this proposal will explain the major problems and drawbacks facing the
primary and secondary schools in the capital city, A.A. followed with a description that
elaborates how the academy to be established will be able to provide achievable and basic
solutions to these problems.
Problem Statement
Some of the basic problems that are creating havoc on the teaching learning process of most
primary and secondary schools in the region are the following:
The first and major drawback is the insufficient background or basic education such as
English language study given to primary level students. Almost all other sciences as well as
social sciences in the secondary or higher level education are given using the English
language. This fact closely associates English language proficiency with a successful
teaching learning process. Not very far away from the above mentioned drawback there
exists another one, connected to irrelevance and inconsistence. Students are given an
education that does not take into consideration current and future level of education.
The second major drawback is inadequate teaching aids and methods. Due to lack of training
and limited financial strength, teachers in many of the schools in Addis Ababa follow poor
teaching methods; that takes into account only the fact that the student is present for a
session, not the fact that the student needs to go parallel with the ever changing technological
and scientific world.
At last there is the problem of partiality in the education system, meaning lack of wholeness.
This is a basic drawback contributing highly for producing a citizen capable of a lot of
mathematics and philosophy but do not have the wisdom to be creative and serve themselves
as well as their society. The complete absence of talent search mechanism is also a
contributing negative influence as well as a basic problem by itself.
Even though there are some other drawbacks such as environmental influences unfavorable
for educational atmospheres, the above mentioned three can be considered the basic ones
that are calling the attentions of everyone concerned. If these can be solved in the right
manner, the standards of schools in our capital can be greatly improved.

JUSTIFICATION
Riverside International School
By the time it is operational, the academy will have a high-standards educational system,
which has proved to be most effective in the developed world. This system, which has its
base on a goal oriented, modern and complete teaching learning process, goes hand in hand
with the existing curriculum of schools in Addis Ababa, in a flexible and compatible way.
The system’s strictly developmental attitude will generate the intelligence and the capacity
that enables it to solve the above-mentioned critical shortcomings naturally.
To being with, the academy believes in the notion that, the continuous development of
effective knowledge is inseparable from the continuous development of a child, psychic as
well as physical. If a child has the opportunity to get an excellent continual education
beginning at an early age -especially in language- at the elementary level; then the child’s
natural development will be accompanied with an equally developed understanding and
intellect. The side by side nourishment of both processes -the natural growth and the learning
process - will create students who can easily comprehend what they are being taught at any
level, thus considerably effective. In other words, the academy makes sure that, every
student receives a more than adequate, basic language and discipline background. An
essential part of the system, that makes any student fully fit for future trainings.
One of the unique traits that highlights the academy’s strong bond with modern technology
and state-of-the-art teaching methods is, its bird`s eye view towards the ever narrowing
world and information processes. Backed up with advanced teaching aids, such as audio
visual, high speed broadband internet, science laboratories with modern equipment and
libraries filled with relevant and updated books in electronic and printed forms. By making
use of these readily available modern means of information channeling technologies,
students will be able to get whatever reference materials they need. In addition, they are well
informed about the daily technological and scientific strides the world is making at any time.
In order to protect students from dangerous or immoral parts of the web, parental control
systems are always in place, strictly monitored by a certified web administrator.

Riverside International School

The next major specialty of the Riverside academy is providing an education focused on
objectivity. Every student gets an education in the fields of discipline and morality, time
usage, peer pressure awareness, goal oriented living, physical fitness, music, logic, love of
commitment etc…These are encapsulated in the normal curriculum or as a separate
refreshing activities ,for instance A game, a puzzle etc, designed to inter-simulate the
specific ideal. These activities are created to enhance the full development of intellect, thus
producing a problem solving and a conscious future generation. Riverside academy students
are shaped and molded, so that they will become healthy, energetic, responsible and
successful citizens. This makes the learning process fit for, not only providing effective, but
also wholesome education, which takes into consideration the whole of the individual`s
future endeavors; making the system even more nobler.
The last solution the academy can bring, compared to other schools in the capital city is
connected to its evaluation systems. It has developed two kinds of evaluation systems, one
designed for the teacher and another for the student. Except for a very few minor changes,
the teacher evaluation system is used by most other schools, but the student talent evaluation
system is not widely used in Ethiopian schools. This is a kind of talent search system which
is most effective in determining the area of study, that a child will have the best chance of
success. Thus, parents can be notified about the specific interest, that their child`s future is
most probably pointing.
Concisely, the Riverside academy will be a potential candidate as one of the first advanced,
latest, all encompassing and up-to-date educational institute our capital city had ever seen.

EXECUTIVE SUMMERY

2
Riverside International School
Over the past decade, Ethiopia has attained a considerably high economic growth. The
country has emerged as one of Africa’s most exciting new markets and one of the fastest-
growing economies on the continent. Consequently, the economic status of the society is
rapidly changing from providing their children with a good education to entertaining
themselves in expensive resorts.
This project aims at launching a first rate, all inclusive school ranging from preparatory to
high-school level in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The project has been studied in relation to
similar ventures undertaken in recent years in the hope of creating better quality of
education.
As the majority of the schools are not well equipped and do not provide excellent education
currently, many parents need schools that can provide the exceptional education required.
These parents are capable of paying even what is considered a very large amount for a good
quality of education in Ethiopia.
This project aims to provide the institution and outstanding education to the knowledge
craving citizens of Ethiopia and make revenue at the same time.

EDUCATION IN ETHIOPIA

Ethiopia faces many historical, cultural, social and political obstacles that have restricted
progress in education for many centuries. There is a need to change the importance of
education in the country's social structure, and children should be encouraged and required to
attend school and become educated.

Riverside International School

Since the mid-1970s, there have been drastic a loss of professionals who leave the country,
mostly for economical reasons. Many educated Ethiopians seek higher salaries in foreign
countries; as a result many of those who manage to complete higher education emigrate out
of Ethiopia, creating an endless shortage of qualified professionals in every sector of the
country. As of 2006, there are more Ethiopia-trained doctors living in Chicago than in the
entire country.
Thus, the need for educational institutions and educated human resource is now vital.
However, there are only few international schools with the right facility and equipment to
provide education to the large community in Addis Ababa. There are more than five million
people currently living in the city and most are looking for outstanding schools with money
being no object.
This project provides a solution to this problem by presenting an outstanding idea of building
an all-inclusive school that accommodates up to 1,000 students from pre-kindergarten to
high-school level.

MISSION

Riverside International School prepares students to understand, contribute to, and succeed in
a rapidly changing society, and thus make the world a better place. We will ensure that our
students develop the competencies essential for success and leadership in the emerging
creative economy. We will also lead in generating practical and theoretical knowledge that
enables people to better understand our world and improve conditions for local and global
communities.

4
Riverside International School

We are and will be a school where design and social research drive approaches to
studying issues of our time, such as democracy, care for others, urbanization, technological
change, economic empowerment, sustainability, migration, and globalization. We will be
the preeminent intellectual and creative center for effective engagement in a world that
increasingly demands better-designed objects, communication, systems, and organizations to
meet social needs.

Our vision aligns with shifts in the global economy, society, and environment, which
animate our mission and our values:
 Creativity, innovation, and a desire to challenge the status quo, both in what and
how we teach and in the intellectual ambitions of the School itself
 Social engagement, orienting students' academic experience to help them become
critically engaged citizens dedicated to solving problems and contributing to the public
good.

EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

We will fulfill our mission by extending Riverside International School's legacy as an

academic community, lively and responsive to change, that:
 Focuses on and engages with critical contemporary issues
 Prioritizes humanity and culture in designing systems and environments to improve
the human condition, an approach that draws on design thinking and the liberal,
creative, and performing arts
 Places project-based learning at the center of the educational experience

The Team
The team for this project includes the following:

The School
As mentioned previously, the school that is aimed to be built and organized is the first of its
kind which is fully equipped. The school meets the demands of the students and the
standards of an international school by constituting the following.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The following make the school special and unique that the other schools in Ethiopia

OUR SMALL CLASS SIZE

The school follows a cross-curricular approach using a small class format with an
exceptionally low student-to-teacher ratio. The individual attention that each student receives
makes a huge difference in allowing our students to reach their full potential. By keeping our
total enrolment low and having the freedom to focus on each student's abilities, we will be
able to nurture and coach personalized learning strategies, and do so in a supportive
engaging atmosphere with a unique community spirit.
Riverside International School

OUR SAFE HAVEN

Our students interact, not only with each other but also with people of all
ages. Our school will be a place of friendship and esteem, where students feel
safe from bullying and negative peer pressure. Our students will have daily
interaction between different age groups and work closely together on
academic projects and artistic initiatives. Our learning environment will be caring and
enriching as will the relationships between the students themselves. Our school is the ideal
center that is welcoming and safe place with a beautiful huge grassy yard, safe playground
items and lots of space to run and play.

OUR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

By providing individual academic and personal support and attention to each

student, we will consistently achieve an excellent academic record. Compared
with other school systems, we will have more daily instruction in English and
French with bilingual teachers. Unlike traditional French immersion, our
math, sciences and other core subjects are taught in English which allows for full
comprehension and accelerated learning. Every student's work will be reviewed and graded
with detailed report cards provided each term. All teachers have university degrees,
experience working in other private schools and international teaching experience. Our
students will be prepared to enter higher educational institutions as inspired and confident
individuals - academically, emotionally and creatively.
Our Extra-Curricular Activities

10
Riverside International School
Nothing builds the confidence of children and youth more quickly than direct involvement in
the performing arts. The school holds at least three plays or musicals a year. Our students
will be working together as a close-knit team to successfully perform a challenging feature-
length production. The school incorporates a large visual arts focus into the curriculum. We
see an important part of our vocation as developing the innovation and creativity within each
of our students. We also provide several extra activity programs such as developing skills in
different software programs, swimming with the presence of our staff, Music and arts,
including voice and piano lessons, which can be included during after school hours. We plan
to invite professional artists regularly to visit for talks and performances, and we attend
shows as a school numerous times each year.
Our Students
We will acknowledge each and every student and as we are proud to have
them as part of our school family. Their academic, athletic and artistic talents
will be improved with the teachers with many years of experience.
Respectful, positive attitudes are awarded. Our students will be encouraged
to have a global perspective and awareness as is apparent during our weekly school
discussions. Watching our students’ inquisitive natures, compassion and social awareness
blossom will be a constant reminder to us of why we plan to do this project.
Our Scholarships
Functioning in Ethiopia, we plan to provide free scholarships for selected

students who have a good educational record but require the assistance of an

institution. We plan to register several students free of charge for their

education from grade 1 to 12. By this, we hope to create more productive citizens.
