Benefits of Remote Patient Monitoring

RPM: The Benefits of RPM

• is a subset of telehealth
• leverages sensors to monitor patients both inside Increases quality of life for patients
and outside of conventional clinical settings
• allows physicians to make clinical decisions
remotely Reduces hospitalizations and ER visits (and associated costs)
• can be applied to a wide range of health
conditions Provides users with peace of mind

The COVID-19 pandemic has expanded RPM to a

wide range of health conditions and settings, but the Allows for preventative healthcare
main application is still monitoring of patients in their
home.
Reduces hospital stay times (and associated costs)

Key areas include:

• Patients with chronic conditions Better allocation of healthcare resources (and associated costs)

• Clinical trials
• The elderly More background data for patients improves treatment outcomes
• Wellness

Early Detection of Cardiovascular Conditions

Leveraging consumer electronics for early detection of cardiovascular conditions.

Atrial fibrillation:
• ECG-enabled devices brings AF detection to consumers
• Optical sensors enable BYOD options – smartwatches and smartphones
• Smartwatches bring continuous monitoring in the background
• However, targeted applications may be more effective – lower false positive rate

Hypertension:
• Automated cuffs brings self-management to consumers
• Optical sensors enable wide range of unobtrusive form factors, including continuous monitoring on smartwatch
• Calibration required, but calibration-free options are in development

Heart failure:
• Current RPM programs utilize heart rate, heart rhythm, blood pressure and weight monitoring
• Need to catch the problem earlier - necklaces, anklets, vests, shirts, and skin patches have been developed to monitor
thoracic impedance, many still in clinical trials

Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes

• 3.7 million deaths due to diabetes and high blood glucose

• Diabetes can lead to stroke, blindness, heart attack, kidney failure,
and amputation

• Estimated that 46% are undiagnosed

• 1 in 3 adults in the US on their way to developing type 2 diabetes

• Well-established market of digital health apps, RPM programs

• Shift from test strips to continuous glucose monitors
• Connected scales remain the dominant pre-diabetes technology
• Potential for non-invasive techniques in pre-diabetes space?

• Data, digital health apps, and automated and human coaching help
patients manage their blood sugar

The Rise of Consumer Electronics in RPM

As a sensor – PPG via camera for heart rate, heart rhythm, blood pressure; can also
monitor respiratory rate, movement,
As a hub – collecting / collating of data, automated insights and coaching
As a communication device – submission of data, education, coaching, telehealth,
alerts, reporting of PROs…

As a platform for sensors: Applications in:

• Movement • General vital sign monitoring
• Temperature • Hypertension management
• ECG • AF detection
• Heart rate • Decentralized clinical trials
• Respiration rate • Wellness
• SpO2
• Blood pressure • Movement disorders
• Blood glucose… • Diabetes management?

From Connected to Wearable

• Ongoing trend to develop consumer wearables capable of medical grade sensing

• Companies have made wearable medical devices:

• blood pressure cuffs
• pulse oximeters
• glucometers
• thermometers
• Scales

• How many can we fit into a consumer electronics? Progress varies by parameter.

• Benefits:
• Potential for continuous monitoring in the background
• Decreased friction/burden of monitoring aids patient adherence

Design Challenges for RPM

Overall, developers of RPM sensors and platforms have to consider not just the accuracy of the device and achieving the
relevant regulatory clearances and approvals, but that they should:
• Consider developing both a broadband and a mobile internet supported version of their platform/hub.
• Consider alternatives to video calls.
• Develop systems that can be used immediately out of the box for those who are less technology savvy
• Consider the battery life, particularly for wearable products.
• Consider the size and portability of the device
• Ensure data is secure
• Ensure that data must be compatible with commonly used EHR systems

• Provide actionable insights, rather than information – clear actionable insights, rather than information, is required for
both patients and physicians to remain engaged.
• Have a clear ROI for their customers, ensuring billability (if in the US) and cost savings.
