Plum Mangroves Mahogany Sunflower

a. How many group of plants did you formed?

b. What are the group of plants you have formed?
c. How will you describe each group formed?

C. Motive Question
The teacher will ask the students where they can usually see and use sets or
groups of objects.

D. Lesson Proper / Presentation

After the students answer the motive question, the teacher will present the lesson
about Sets.
Sets
A set is a collection of objects, called elements, that shares a common
characteristic.
Examples:
Well-Defined Sets:
 A set of Philippine Presidents.
 A set of dishes.
 A set of counting numbers.
 A set of odd numbers.
Not Well-Defined Sets:
 The set of all large numbers.
 The set of good writers.
 The set of nice people in your class.

How to Write and Name a Set

A set is represented by a capital letter. Elements are usually represented by small
letters, numbers, words, or representations of the members of a given set. Braces are used
to enclosed the elements. Commas are used to separate the elements.
Example:

K = {red, blue, yellow}

R = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …}
P = {+, -, ×, ÷}

Three Ways to Describe a Set

The Roster Notation or Listing Method
Listing each element of the set inside the symbol { }. Each distinct element is
listed once and the order of listing the elements does not matter.
Examples:
A = {1, 2, 3, 4}
B = {p, h, i, l, n, e, s}
C = {5, 10, 15, ...}
D = {Oppo, Vivo, Samsung}
The Verbal Description Method
A method of describing a set in words.
Examples:
1. Set A is the set of counting numbers less than 5.
2. Set B is the set of letters in the word “Philippines”
3. Set C is the set of positive multiples of 5.
4. Set D is the set of mobile phones.

The Set Builder Notation or Rule Method

A method that lists the rules that determine whether an object is an element of the
set rather than the actual elements.
Examples:
1. A = {x l x is a counting number less than 5}.
“read as “the set of all x’s such that x is a counting number less than 5”.
The vertical bar ( ) after the first x is translated as “such that”.
2. B= {x l x is a letter in the word “Philippines”}
3. C= {x I x is a positive multiple of 5}
4. D= {x I x is a mobile phone}

E. Generalization / Application
Set is also widely us in our daily routine.
Example:
 Making a playlist of songs
 Organizing your notebooks
 Categories Article
 Creating Team
 Shopping
 Party Organizer

2. Collection of all rich people in Metro Manila.
3. Collection of all Math teachers in a particular school.
4. Collection of all Grade 7 Filipino students.
5. Collection of all tall girls in the campus.

B. Use the roster method to list all the elements of the set described.
1. The set of counting numbers less than 10.
2. The set of vowels of the word “MISSISSIPPI”.
3. The set of natural numbers which are multiples of 2 and less than 15.
4. The set of distinct letters of the word “MISSISSIPPI”.
5. The set of the first five positive prime numbers.
C. Write each of the following using set-builder notation.
1. {1, 3, 5, … , 39}
2. {40, 42, 44, … , 78, 80}
3. {101, 102, 103, 104, …}
4. {Saturday, Sunday}
5. {red, blue, green}
6. {b, c, d, … , x, y, z}
7. {dog, cat, mouse, rabbit, …}
8. {Ellen, Edgar, Edwin, Eugene, …}
9. {Noynoy, GMA, Erap, FVP, Cory}
10. {GMA 7, ABS-CBN, TV 5, IBC 13}
