No Rope, No Problem:

An Innovation of using magnetic fenders for safer and more efficient Ship-to-Ship Operation

ABSTRACT
Mooring rope is an important means to keep the ship alongside to another ship during
Ship-to-sip (STS) operations. However, the mooring rope is also a serious hazard to the ship's
crews during the operation, as it has a natural tendency to break when stretched beyond its
breaking limit. In this study, an electromagnetic fender is used as an alternative mooring
system to overcome the limitations of mooring ropes. This magnetic fender not only absorbs
berthing energy during STS operations, but it also serves to secure the two ships together.   A series
of simulation analyses were conducted using the Kongsberg Ship Simulator to ascertain the
feasibility and operational impact of magnetic fender systems. This analysis was conducted
under a range of scenarios, including those involving environmental and operational limits.
According to the findings, the magnetic fender could be a viable option for a safer and more
efficient ship-to-ship operation.
