HANIE :and I’m Hanie ,I’m the Chief Marketing Officer.

MEIMEI : I would like to say thank you for coming here today guys !

BACKGROUND

Meimei: As I mentioned about our company’s problems in the previous meeting, we

all know that our company - Fast Fitness owns and operates a chain of health and
leisure clubs in the United States. Two years ago, the company decided to enter the
South American market by opening six clubs in São Paulo, Brazil and the aim was to
attract people aged 20 - 40. We invested in a gymnasium, the latest equipment, an
aerobics studio, a swimming pool, sun decks, a café, a bar, and a clubroom for each
club. Four of the clubs are located in areas where large numbers of Japanese, Spanish,
Chinese, and Italian immigrants live.
However ,the performance of the clubs has been disappointing. And none of them has
reached their turnover and profit targets. Many members have not renewed their
membership, and the clubs have not attracted enough new members.

In order to solve these problems, Fast Fitness recently advertised for a General
Manager. His/Her main task will be to boost sales at the clubs and increase profits.

Now, KATY and Anne will talk in more detail about some requirements and
appropriate qualities of this position.

KATY: Ok, firstly, our company is looking for a manager who can lead, coordinate
and motivate staff. The second is that managers can exploit new business
opportunities.

Liaising with and motivating our team of managers and their staff is one of the duties
of this position as well. Besides, contributing to marketing plans and strategies. And
last but not least, the manager will help the company increase the revenue and profits
of the clubs in São Paulo.

ANNE: To be our General Manager, he or she should be a dynamic, enthusiastic,

flexible person. A manager has a strong interest in health and fitness, a good track
record in previous jobs, and the ability to work with people from different cultural
backgrounds. The new General Manager will have outstanding communication and
interpersonal skills, a for new ideas, and organizational skills.

MEIMEI: Alright. After a long time of recruiting with thousands of applications, we

have shortlisted four bright candidates. They are Martha Gomez, Silvia Cominelli,
Sean Wilder, and Paulo Goncalves. Ok, let's start with the first person.

1. Martha Gomez
KATY: The first applicant is Martha Gomez from Brazil. What do you think about
this candidate based on her CV?

ANNE: In the interview, I see that Martha considers herself a creative person. and
also, she has many years of experience as a professional dancer, which helps to
develop her creativity that may be applied in designing training programs for
particular customers

LATTE: I do not deny Martha's valuable skills, but her CV does not specifically
indicate any management experience, especially in the fitness field.
HANIE: As you said, but she has other standout experiences, such as being an
instructor for a small fitness center .Teaching and training skills at previous work,
combined with Martha's warm, friendly, and dynamic personality will enable-l - her
to create a positive team environment.

MEIMEI: I highly appreciate the potential of this candidate. She can develop new
detailed strategies to expand Club’s activities and explore new markets.

HANIE: I see your point, but in Martha's CV, she has demonstrated dedication and
creativity in her work by introducing fitness programs for patients with Parkinson's
and multiple sclerosis-( skləˈrəʊ.sɪs). This shows that she can research and develop
new fitness plans for our company ,

KATY: I see that with her acquirements, Martha could be a potential candidate for
the General Manager position at our Clubs. However, when considering leadership
and management skills, we should still consider other candidates.

2. Silvia Cominelli:
MEIMEI: Alright. Now let’s move on to the next applicant : Silvia Cominelli

KATY: Well, I'm very impressed with her CV, especially her qualification in the
sports field. Receiving a certificate of training as a dietician from Berkeley University
and a Master's degree in Sports Psychology helps her gain lots of knowledge not only
about nutrition programs but also methods to inspire and motivate our memberships.

LATTE: As Silvia Cominelli wrote in her resume', she has helped the national
football team win the World Cup, and currently, she is a sports organizer at a
women’s college. With those experiences, she knows the ways to access and give
members useful advice on exercising at our clubs.

KATY: Excellent ! A worthy candidate!

HANIE: yeah ,Silvia had detailed strategies for our club’s problems as she thinks our
clubs must spend a lot of money on multimedia advertising to improve profits and
offer big discounts to new members. This will grow Fast Fitness on an ongoing basis.

MEIMEI: Sorry for interrupting, but it isn't appropriate with our current situation
because we are dealing with financial difficulties.
ANNE: I partially agree with Silvia ‘s opinion. We will still apply discounts to new
members, but not too much. For example, we can free the first training sessions, or
reduce the tuition fee depending on the number of months that the members register.

LATTE: Yes, I couldn't agree with you more.

KATY: However, when asked about her character, she admitted that her frankness
might occasionally upset others. Besides, she is a perfectionist so the staff will be
under pressure to work with her.

LATTE: On the other hand, she is willing to reward employees with good
performance. A leader who is brave, ambitious, decisive and outspoken in making
important decisions is what every company needs, and she believes she has it.

Meimei: So I see that Silvia is a strong candidate for this position. She is adequate for
our requirements but we should also look at other applicants.

3. Sean Wilder

MEIMEI: Ok, we talk about Sean Wilder.

HANIE: Well, that’s Sean Wilder from America. He’s currently a teacher in a
private language school and can communicate fluently in three languages like Silvia.
Throughout his 10 years as a teacher, he used to manage sports programs for the
schools and got Master’s in Sports Management. Hmm, that sounds quite good.

KATY :
Well, I believe that he overestimates the value of his degree given that I'm unsure of
his performance in sports programs after so many years.

LATTE: That’s how I see it too. In the interview, he didn't answer the heart of the
matter, especially his main weakness. That’s made me so concerned. He also dressed
very casually compared to the other candidates, and that has lost his points with us

ANNE : He didn't convince me because he didn’t show any innovative ideas for
improving the clubs’ profit and affirmed that he wouldn’t be too friendly with the
staff. If we hire him, our clubs may not only fail to meet their revenue and profit
targets but also put pressure on the personnel.

KATY: And … the club's reputation and quality will be impacted by this too.
HANIE: I absolutely agree with you. So I think he’s not a potential candidate for this
General Manager position. We must take into consideration the thoughts of others.

4. Paulo Goncalves
MEIMEI: OK, We come to the final candidate, Paulo Goncalves .

KATY: His resume’ states that he worked as a gym teacher in Florida for the past
two years, which seems extremely impressive.

LATTE: Well… he speaks three languages: Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese

very well. In addition, he has martial arts and a black belt in karate. Thus ,He could
have knowledge of how to design activities that are appropriate for the members.

HANIE: When he came for an interview, I found him quite interesting and creative
when he offered to use his image to promote the club. I see this as possible because
he was once famous when he played a role in the successful Hong Kong movie Jackie
Chan. This will help attract a large number of customers to join the clubs.

LATTE:
Sounds great !But He dropped out of school when he was 16 years old. He hasn't
worked in a managerial position before. It will be tough for us to pick him, since our
company will have to retrain his management abilities.

ANNE: I agree with you, he is not suitable for this job. To discover the best person
for this role, we need to carefully analyze this.

DECISION
MEIMEI: Ok, we have already discussed about strengths and weaknesses of four
applicants. Now, it is time for us to consider and choose who will be the best person
to be Fast Fitness’s General Manager. I want to hear your opinion guys.

KATY: I think Sean Wilder and Paulo will not be suitable for this job, because Sean
Wilder is overconfident and doesn’t have the right ideas to develop Club, About
Paulo-he left school too early at 16 and hasn't worked in a managerial- position
before.

LATTE : We also don't accept two of them to be our Manager as the weaknesses we
mentioned before.

MEIMEI: So ..now we only have 2 potential applicants: Martha Gomez and Silvia
Cominell, do you all agree?

EVERYONE : yeah !

ANNE : Hm,...In my viewpoint, Martha and Silvia should be considered . But Sivia
can speak English and other languages so it’s easier to communicate with
membership who come from different countries ,she has experience in the sports
arena as well.

MEIMEI : ,What do you think about the two candidates ?

HANIE : Yes, I suppose her management skills and experience in the sports arena- as
well. I think it will make directors, staff and our membership satisfied with her.

LATTE: I totally agree with you.

MEIMEI: Ok so everyone agrees that Silvia is the most appropriate candidate for
General Manager at Fast Fitness for the next time. , right? Any different ideas?

EVERYONE: No!

MEIMEI: Alright! Katy , please contact Silvia that she was chosen to become
General Manager at our company as soon as possible.

KATY: Ok ,I got it !

MEIMEI: So the today’s meeting we have selected the new General Manager for the
upcoming time . it cannot be successful without your presence and opinions. Once
again,thank you for being today

*Ending the meeting (say thanks to lecturer and the audience):
