Before we are going to tackle another lesson, I have here two statements. All I need is two volunteers to

2. Filipinos become cautious with their health during this pandemic.

 Which statement can be proven as true?

2. Filipinos become cautious with their health during this pandemic.

 Which statement cannot be proven at all?

1. I think eating banana keeps you away from corona virus.

B. Presentation
Today, we will discuss about “OPINION AND ASSERTION.”

In today’s lesson, you are expected to:

 distinguish the statement of opinion or assertion;
 formulate statement of opinion or assertion; and,
 stress the importance of being able to distinguish opinion and assertion in daily life.

C. Discussion
(The teacher distributes fact sheets to the students.)

OPINION is a statement that involves the speaker’s preferences or emotions that cannot be proven as
true or false. It usually starts with signal phrases such as I think or I believe and contains words like
best, worst, beautiful, outstanding or should.
For example:
1. Chocolate ice cream is the best flavor of ice cream sold.
2. Ice cream sundaes should always come with a cherry on top.
3. I think my outlook in life was changed by the pandemic.

ASSERTION is somewhat similar to opinion (that is a belief of someone) but it can be proven as true
or false. Statements of assertion are considered declarations, as if they were true even though they
may not be. These statements do not start with a phrase I think or I believe.

For example:
1. Scientists are the smartest people on Earth.
2. Milk is good for your body.
3. Taking vitamins every day makes you healthy and strong.

(The teacher asks for further clarifications and queries about the topic discussed.)

D. Generalization
This time, we will play the Wheel of Fortune. Everyone is assigned a number. Once the wheel stops and
points to a number, the person who’s assigned to that number will be the lucky winner who gets to answer the
question from a bowl of questions. Every correct answer is good for two (2) points.

 What do you call to the statement that cannot be proven true or false?
 What phrases or words does opinion statement contain?
 What do you call to the statement that is considered a declaration of person’s belief that may be proven
true or false?
 To sum up, what is the difference between opinion and assertion?
 How important is being able to recognize an opinion or assertion statement?

(The teacher asks again for further clarifications and queries about the topic discussed before proceeding to the
activities.)

E. Reproduction
Activity 1. This time, we will have an activity called “You Raise Me Up.” You will be divided into four
groups. Each group will be given a cartolina strip that contains the words, “OPINION” and “ASSERTION.”

(The teacher reads the mechanics of the activity.)

MECHANICS OF THE ACTIVITY

A statement will be shown on TV. All you have to do is to raise the cartolina strip given to you that will
represent the answer of your group. Every correct answer you earn is good for two (2) points and will be
manifested on the “SCORE BOARD.” The group who can earn the highest points will be declared the
winner. However, 1-point deduction will be given to groups who are noisy and uncooperative. Everyone is
encouraged to always cooperate and promote honesty and respect.

Is that clear?
Are you now ready?
The teacher starts facilitating the activity.
