Describe the Novice to Expert theory and their distinguishing features.

This theory is a concept that explains how nurses gradually acquire knowledge and

abilities related to patient care through a solid educational foundation and personal experiences.

It includes how a nurse describes “knowing how” without “knowing that” type of profession. In

nursing expertise, research has expanded knowledge, which applies through understanding

practical applications.

In nursing profession, site some importance of determining the level of expertise of


nurses
Novice is a beginner with no experience at all. Advanced Beginner has received prior

experience in the nursing world and portrays an excellent performance. Competent is a nurse

who has acquired 2-3 years of experience in the nursing profession. Proficient is a nurse who

perceives and understands the whole situation. Expert is a type of nurse who no longer relies on

any rules or guidelines in any case.

Enumerate the Novice to Expert levels.

The Novice to Expert Theory identifies five levels of nursing expertise which consists:

● Novice

● Advanced Beginner

● Competent

● Proficient

● Expert
