DEALING WITH SUPERSTITIONS

Lessons from the healing of

the man born blind
John 9
What are supersititions?
Superstitious beliefs in the context of
Christianity can refer to beliefs or practices
that are not supported by scripture, but are
believed to have some kind of supernatural
power or significance.
Common Filipino Superstitions

Oro, Plata, Mata

Sebang
Pamahiin sa patay
Pamahiin sa patay
These superstitions are easy to deal with
and we are expected to not believe or
practice these as Christians.
There are also superstitions among us that hide
as "Christian/Biblical" traditions.

And they can be dangerous!

Superstitions abound when we
try to oversimplify how things
work.

The Christian Life is Complex
The difficulties are real
The challenges are real
Navigating how to be a practicing Christian
in a sinful world is a difficult thing to do!
There is no simple answer for all questions.
THIS IS
PROSPERITY GOSPEL!!!

+
It undermines the Providence of
God.
Why is this wrong?
These things are good!
But if our intentions focus on what we can
gain, or to avoid loss, it becomes a distraction
from the main purpose by which we were:
redeemed!
Superstitions distract us from
appreciating the purposes of
events and things in our live.
John 9:3-5
There is a miracle that just happened, and
yet the focus is on who sinned?
There is a miracle and yet instead of
praising God, the focus is on finding out if
the man was actually born blind
Superstitions leads to legalism

John 9:13-17
Notice that the Pharisees were more
concerned about the Sabbath
Mark 2:27-28, And he said unto them, The
sabbath was made for man, and not man for
the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is
Lord also of the sabbath.
Legalism is wrong because in reality it is
IDOLATRY!
It is idolatry because we substitute the
importance that rightly belongs to God into
the letter of the law ignoring the spirit of the
law
Genuine faith is the only way we
can overcome our superstitions.
