Significance of Course Numbers Forgiveness Policy


Effective 1977-78 ECU students who have been out of school for a minimum of three
0001 - 0999 Remedial consecutive academic years may request special readmission.
1000 - 1999 Freshman Subsequent GPAs of students readmitted under this policy will be
2000 - 2999 Sophomore computed without inclusion of previous coursework in which a grade below
3000 - 3999 Junior C was received, noted as indicated in the Undergraduate Grading System.
4000 - 4999 Senior However, this work will be included in calculations for consideration for
5000 - 5999 Senior/Masters degrees with distinction.
6000 - 6999 Masters
7000 - 7999 Doctoral Grade Points and Grade Point Average
8000 - 9000 Doctoral Grade Points are computed by multiplying the number of semester-hour
credits by the number of quality points awarded for each letter grade. The
Converted to Semester System 8-23-77 GPA is obtained by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the
total number of semester hours attempted. The only exception of this is
Undergraduate Grading System when the student is using either the Grade Replacement Policy or

Grade Definition Per Credit Hour A student is permitted to use the Grade Replacement Policy a maximum of
A Excellent 4.0 four times for 1000- and 2000- level courses in which he or she has
A- 3.7 earned a grade below C. Although the original grade will not be used in
B+ 3.3 determining the GPA of the student, the original grade will remain on the
B Above Average 3.0 student’s permanent academic record and will be included in the
B- 2.7 calculation for consideration of honors. The replacement grade, or last
C+ 2.3 grade, stands. Students receiving an F on the replacement grade must
C Average 2.0 repeat the course if credit is required for graduation. In the event that the
C- 1.7 original grade was a D, no additional hours will be awarded.
D+ 1.3
D Unsatisfactory 1.0 Undergraduate Probation and Suspension Codes
D- 0.7 A student who is not meeting the required scholastic eligibility standards
F Failed 0.0 will have one of the following codes printed on the permanent record.
P Passed
I Incomplete #2 Academic Warning - This code indicates that the student is
AU Audited performing at the required scholastic level at the present time; however,
W Withdrawn continued performance at this level will, upon the attainment of the next
D* Unsatisfactory, Forgiveness Applied retention period, result in academic probation and inability to graduate
F* Failed, Forgiveness Applied during the normal time frame.
NG No Grade #3 Academic Probation - This code indicates that the student has not
NR Not Reported met the required scholastic standards. If the deficiency is not removed by
PL Placement Credit the end of the next semester of enrollment, the student will be declared
XF Failure-Academic Integrity Violation academically ineligible to return.
FZ Failure (pandemic code) #4 Academically Ineligible - This code indicates the student’s
scholastic performance has not met the requirements necessary to
