Modals are verbs which express a certain ‘mood’ in a sentence; for example : you can do something, should do something or must do something. Modal verbs in English In English, modal verbs are generally used together with a main verb in the infinitive: ‘If you are free, you can come with us.’ méchten, which means ‘would like to’: Er méchte arbeiten. He would like to work Er méchte ein neues Auto kaufen. He would like to buy a new car. Its verb endings are regular, except for er/sie/es, where there is no final -t, and there is no stem vowel change: ich méchte du méchtest er/sie/es mochte wir méchten ihr méchtet Sie méchten sie méchten Note that méchten is often used on its own, without a second verb: Ich méchte ein Glas Bier, bitte. | would like a glass of beer, please.
