SEPTEMBER 2011
Upcoming at Grace:
CALLING ALL
YOUTH
Next summer, the ELCIC will be hosting the National Youth Gathering in Saskatoon SK. Pastor Sean is the Alberta representative on the planning committee and will be attending the event. So... who wants to go? Here are some details. - Date: August 16-19 (plus transportation time) Location: TCU Place, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - We should be able to fundraise most of the money to go. - Likely well join with some other groups for transportation (likely a bus, probably from Barrhead, probably not a one day trip to make the whole experience more fun... ROAD TRIP!) - A group would meet in September to plan who is going, how much we want to raise and how much we want to pay out of pocket, select some team leaders and get generally set up. - The group would meet throughout the year to bond as a group (almost like a youth group)
October and Beyond: Special Congregational Meeting to assess the willingness of the church to share Pastor Seans time with the Anglicans. Caring Conversation (Date, Time, and Place as yet to be decided.) Oct. 30th - Joint Reformation service in Hinton. Oct. 30th - Evening Worship hosting all churches in town. Newsletter Contents:
Pg. 1 - Calling all youth and Upcoming events. Pg. 2 - From the council chairs perspective. Pg. 3 - Back to church Sunday. Pg. 4 Bishop Ron Mayans September e-message. Pg. 5 FAQ re: convention motions pertaining to restructuring and homosexuality.

What are some practical suggestions that will help me invite someone to church?
Inviting our friends & neighbours to church is one of the simplest steps in evangelism. By participating in B2CS, Anglicans and Lutherans are discovering that its possible to share our faith in a way that is both easy & natural. So partly, B2CS is a growth opportunity for parishes, challenging us to stretch our faith muscle.
v prayerfully consider if there is someone God is preparing for you to invite to church v pray for this person and your conversation, that God will prepare them to receive the invitation v practise what you want to say in extending the invitation v make the invitation with confidence; use the cards provided by your parish church v if they say yes, offer to pick them up and drive them to church on September 25th ; that way, you reduce their stress of visiting a new place v sit with them during the service and help them find their way through it v after the service introduce them to your friends over coffee and include them in the conversation v talk to them about their experience on the ride home and invite them back
Gracious God, we thank and praise you that you welcome all people into your presence through Jesus your Son. Help us to extend that welcome as we invite friends and neighbours to Back to Church Sunday, so that they may come to know you in the company of your people. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN
What would happen if everyone invited one person to church on September 25?
Recommendations of the Structural Renewal Taskforce were approved in principle, authorizing the national church council to move forward with the implementation process. More information regarding these changes, follows - see RESTRUCTURING. 2. Who are the delegates that make up the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) convention assembly? Voting members come from the 620 congregations of this church. Just over two- thirds are lay delegates and almost onethird are rostered delegates elected at conference conventions (by November 30th of the year prior to convention). Each parish is represented either by a lay delegate or by a rostered delegate. The Synod of Alberta and the Territories is assigned 48 rostered delegates, based on a baptized membership of just over 39,000. Although the 6 bishops (5 synodical and 1 national) have voice, they do not have vote. Article XI (ELCIC Constitution) states that: The voting membership of conventions shall consist of: a. Two hundred rostered ministers (lay and diaconal) elected by the conferences as allocated by the National Church Council on the basis of baptized membership; and b. A lay delegate may be elected by each parish not already represented by a rostered minister. An additional lay delegate may be elected by every parish with more than eight hundred baptized members. Any parish with less than eight hundred members represented by a rostered minister for two consecutive conventions may not be represented by a rostered minister at the following convention. c. Twelve youth selected by the synods as members of the youth assembly. 3. In order to be approved, some decisions of the ELCIC Convention require a 2/3 majority while others require a simple majority vote. How is the vote margin determined? Article XX of the ELCIC Constitution specifies that Adoption of an amendment (to the Constitution) shall require passage at this and the next regular convention by a two-thirds vote of the delegates present and voting. Bourinots Rules of Order, latest edition, is the governing parliamentary law of this church, and Bourinots states: For certain important issues, the by-laws or regulations often state that there must be a two-thirds majority for a motion to carry, in routine business a simple majority is sufficient. The Convention Assembly agreed that the vote on a new Social Statement on Human Sexuality (Resolution #25) required a simple majority to pass and the Re-structuring resolution required approval by 2/3 of the delegates. 4. Did our delegate vote the way I asked her/him to? Lutheran history has never had voting delegates who have been bound to vote in a particular way. Persons are elected or appointed by a congregation to this representative position based upon his/her commitment to the Lord and the church, prayerfulness in discernment and common sense in making faithful decisions on behalf of all. The assembly seeks the Spirits guidance and movement through conversation and prayer. (Continued on next page)
