JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Clinical Fellow ST1/2 – Obstetrics and Gynaecology

GRADE: Clinical Fellow ST1/2
DURATION: Fixed Term 12 months
RESPONSIBLE TO: Clinical Lead for Obstetrics and Gynaecology
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Medical Director for Women’s and Children’s Services

JOB SUMMARY

The junior medical team work on a shift system but have a named consultant on duty for the
day/night. Wherever possible the timetable aims to provide continuity of junior medical staff,
although there may be occasions where the On-Take commitment and the junior doctor’s
requirement lead to alternative arrangements.

Multidisciplinary clinical audit sessions are held each month with presentations from medical
and midwifery staff on topics which are pre-determined in the annual Clinical Audit
programme. Also held monthly are perinatal morbidity, perinatal mortality, ultrasound scan
and histopathology meetings.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The doctor will be expected to show qualities of leadership but also to know their limitations
and call for help and advice appropriately
Trainees will also begin to work independently
ST1/2 level doctor will be expected to gain the necessary competencies by rotating through
the services in order to gain the relevant experience
Liaise between Midwives, nurses, other junior doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical
staff
Attend to the day to day management of day case, out-patient and in-patients
Attend and participate in ward rounds and operating theatre sessions as timetabled
Attend general and specialist out-patient, diagnostic and pre-assessment clinics
Teach medical students as directed
Supervise, monitor and assist the F2 doctors in post take ward rounds as part of the rostered
emergency work

To keep up-to date with all administrative duties including letters, results and discharge
summaries as required
Study for higher examinations and maintain continued professional development
Undertake and assist in audit projects at various times throughout the rotations
Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions
To co-operate with members of the HR department when monitoring hours of work
Attend induction in each hospital or new department
Attend post mortem demonstrations – when required
Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave

ROTA

Doctors will work a rolling 9 week rota comprises of 1 in 3 weekend plus 1 week
of nights (ward/clinic/theatre sessions) Banding: 1A 50%

GENERAL STATEMENTS:

TRAINING

All staff will be required to keep mandatory training records up to date. All Medical staff are
required to participate in CPD as part of the Appraisal and Revalidation process.

INFORMATION GOVERNANCE

• All staff must be familiar with and comply with the contents of the Information
Governance Handbook, a personal copy will be provided at Induction to all staff.

set out in the Trust’s Confidentiality Policy.
• All staff are required to read and comply with all policies that are issued relating to the
electronic security of Trust’s information.
• All staff who create, access, transfer, modify sensitive Trust’s records have a
responsibility to be both accurate and timely and ensure that all the information that
they record either on paper or electronically is complete.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Your attention is drawn to the confidential nature of information collected and used throughout
the NHS. The unauthorised use or disclosure of patient, staff or other personal information is
a dismissible offence. The unauthorised disclosure of information could also result in a
prosecution for an offence, or action for civil damaged, under the Data Protection Act.

All matters relating to patients’ diagnosis and treatment, staff or the Financial or contractual
position of the Trust are strictly confidential and under no circumstances is such information
to be divulged or passed to any unauthorised person(s) under penalty of summary dismissal.

All staff should take particular care relating to the electronic storage and transfer of
confidential information. This should only be done in accordance with the Trust’s Information
Security Policy.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

All employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed upon them under the Health &
Safety at Work Act (1974) to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to
provide a safe environment for employees and visitors.

LOCATION

You will be based at Care Group (1, 2, 3 or 4) which is located in Basildon, Southend, and
Broomfield). You will generally be expected to undertake your normal duties at the principal
place of work, however, in the course of your duties you may also be required to work at any
of the sites within the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust areas as well as other
NHS sites as part of the delivery of the service.

Other Information

This job description is a reflection of the present requirements of the post and the content
may be subject to review and amendment in light of changes and developments.

All Staff will also be expected to abide by the relevant code of professional practice relating
to their discipline.

Terms and Conditions of Service

The post is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff
(England and Wales) and to the NHS Pension Regulations. You will receive the nationally agreed
remuneration for Specialty Registrars in Hospital employment and any changes to those rates that
the Secretary of State for Health may authorise from time to time.

The salary scale depending on experience for full-time employees will be as below (National Medical
and Dental Pay Circular):

ST1-ST2 MN35 pay scale


ST3-ST8 MN37 pay scale

Hours: 40 hours per week

A discretionary banding supplement determined by of the Terms and Conditions of Service maybe
applicable for hours worked over and above 40 hours a week to a maximum of 48 hours including
unsocial hours depending on the rota.

Part time staff will be paid pro rata to this scale.

The appointment can be terminated by giving the required notice on each side, unless application of
the statutory minimum period would be more favourable to the Practitioner.

Relocation Expenses:

Relocation expenses may be granted on the understanding that the new location meets the
requirements of the Trust. Agreement regarding relocation expenses must be approved by the
service.

Leave

Annual leave entitlement is set out within the Terms and Conditions of Service for hospital medicalstaff.

Study leave is available as provided for under the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital
Medical and Dental staff, subject to the approval of the Supervising Consultant and Clinical Director.
The General Manager has final overall approval of all leave (study leave, annual leave,
compassionate leave and professional leave).

Appraisal and Development

This is conducted by a trained, Trust-nominated appraiser. It is expected that the successful


candidate will comply with the appraisal process. Yearly appraisals are a mandatory requirement as a
part of the GMC Revalidation cycle for all medical staff in the NHS.
