IMPACT TEST

ROAD MAP

UCS--66 MATERIALS
UCS

(a) Unless exempted by the rules of UG-

UG-20(f) or other rules
of this Division, Fig. UCS-
UCS-66 shall be used to establish
impact testing exemptions for steels listed in Part UCS.
Fig. UCS-
UCS-66
– impact testing is required for a combination of MDMT and
thickness (as defined below) which is below the curve
assigned to the subject material.
material.
– If MDMT and thickness combination is on or above the
curve,, impact testing is not required.
curve required.
Each components, shall be treated as separate
components..
components
Each component shall be evaluated for impact test
requirements based on its individual material classification,
thickness.

Rules to Establish the Minimum Design
Metal Temperature (MDMT)
Requirements for low temperature operation for vessels and
vessel parts constructed of carbon and low alloy steels are
provided in paragraphs UCS-
UCS-66, UCS
UCS--67 and UCS
UCS--68. The
organization of the requirements is as follows:
Paragraph UCS-
UCS-66 – provides rules for exemption of impact
test requirements for carbon and low alloy steel base material
listed in Part UCS.
Paragraph UCS-
UCS-67 – provides rules for exemption of impact
test requirements for welding procedures.
Paragraph UCS-
UCS-68 – provides supplemental design rules for
carbon and low alloy steels with regard to Weld Joint
Categories, Joint Types, post weld heat treatment
requirements, and allowable stress values.

Impact Test Road Map

1. Determine Curve
2. Determine MDMT of Material using fig. UCS- UCS- 66
3. Determine P no.
4. Check UGUG--20 (f) for exemption
5. Is PWHT conducted although not required ? If
yes get 30 o F reduction (UCS
(UCS--68 ( c ))
6. Is ratio = 1 ? If no, continue (UCS-
(UCS-66.2)
7. Use fig UCS-
UCS-66.1 for temperature reduction
8. Compare MDMT Vessel to MDMT Material, if
MDMT material equal or lesser then impact test
not required

UG-20 DESIGN TEMPERATURE
(f) Impact testing is not mandatory ….

(1) The material shall be limited to P- No. 1, Gr.

No. 1 or 2, and the thickness ≤ :
(a) 1/2 in. (13 mm) for materials listed in
Curve A
(b) 1 in. (25 mm) for materials listed in
Curve B, C, or D
(2) The completed vessel shall be hydro-tested.
(3) - 20°F (-29°C) ≤ DT ≤ 650°F (345°C)

4
Requirement for PWHT’d
Thickness UCS – 56
Lethal Substances UW – 2
Forming UCS – 79
– Fiber elongation > 5 %, maybe up to 40 % if
the following not exist
Contain lethal substances
Material requires impact test
Thickness before forming > 5/8 “
Thinning > 10 %
Forming temperature 250 – 900 deg. F
Low temperature UCS – 68 (b)

UCS-68(c)
If PWHT is performed when it is not
otherwise a requirement of this
Division, a 30°F (17°C) reduction in
impact testing exemption temperature
may be given to the minimum
permissible temperature from Fig.
UCS-66 for P-No. 1 materials. The
resulting exemption temperature may
be colder than -55°F (-48°C).

UCS 66.2 (b)
(b) When the coincident ratio defined in Figure UCS
UCS--66.1 is
less than one, Figure UCS-
UCS-66.1 provides a basis for the use
of components made of Part UCS materials to have a colder
MDMT than that derived from (a) above without impact
testing.

(1) See below.

(-a) For such components, and for a MDMT of −55 −55°°F

(−48°
(−48 °C) and warmer, the MDMT without impact testing
determined in (a) above for the given material and
thickness may be reduced as determined from Figure UCS UCS--
66.2. If the resulting temperature is colder than the
required MDMT, impact testing of the material is not
required.
