Typically, it is a journey to a shrine or other location of importance to a person's beliefs and faith. Many religions attach spiritual importance to particular places: the place of birth or death of founders or saints, or to the place of their “calling” or spiritual awakening, or of their connection (visual or verbal) with the divine, or to locations where miracles were performed or witnessed, or locations where a deity is said to live or be “housed,” or any site that is seen to have special spiritual powers. Such sites may be commemorated with shrines or temples that devotees are encouraged to visit for their own spiritual benefit: to be healed or have questions answered or to achieve some other spiritual benefit. Asa WYD pilgrim we will set out to encounter Christ through the stories and experiences of those who have gone before us as well as those we travel with. This Pilgrimage is the trip of a lifetime for many of you, visiting some of the most popular landmarks in the world; however, we can never forget the spiritual nature of our journey. We will be encouraged to: * pray, + reflect, + share our experiences with our travelling companions and most importantly with those we leave at home. Our expectations of your behaviour and participation on the pilgrimage reflect the purpose of the journey; however, you will still enjoy the trip immensely. Part of the experience of travelling on a Pilgrimage is sampling the food of the cultures we will be entering, and participating in the life of the young people, but doing so in a manner that is respectful of the pilgrimage, the people you encounter and of yourself. WHAT TO EXPECT AT WYD World Youth Day is a very interesting phenomenon. It is a great meeting of young people from all over the world gathered to celebrate and learn about their faith. It is one of the primary means by which the Church proclaims the message of Christ to and expresses its concern for young people. The weeklong event includes daily masses, catechesis, youth festival activities nearly every evening, Stations of the Cross, a night vigil followed by an all-night sleep out before the final Mass, the official WYD. Of course, we cannot forget the presence of his Holiness, Pope Francis. Think about packing yourself some medications to help you keep going. Remember to keep all medication in the packs (which you can flatten to take up less room) so you and security know what it is and how to use it. The following is a list of suggested medications that you can get over the counter, that will assist with every situation that travelling can throw at you. Other brands may be available and this list is purely a guide. Please consult a doctor or pharmacist for medical advice. Paracetamol or ibuprofen (pain and fever relief) Hydralyte (dehydration) - this will be an essenti Imodium (diarrhoea) Buscopan (stomach pains and cramps) Coloxyl (constipation) Glucodin tabs (instant energy) Travelcalm (travel sickness) Nausetile (anti-nausea) De-gas (wind pain) Zantac (indigestion) Claratyne (antihistamine) Eyedrops (sore/dry eyes) Bandaids (and more Bandaids) Antiseptic cream Antibacterial hand wash Feminine Hygiene products Important; Pilgrimage Leaders are not permitted to provide you with medication, so you need to pack this yourself. Cotton money belt to be worn under clothes for security Ziplock bags Australian souvenirs for swapping. Money/cash cards - Save details in an email and photocopy cards. Leave room to bring things home and remember that you will receive a WYD backpack when you arrive in Lisbon. Although your international flights allow greater baggage allowances you also have an internal flight from Rome to Lisbon with a much smaller allowance. We strongly recommend keeping the weight of your baggage to 17kg Pagel 12 You will return with more! MONEY While we are away we will be using the Euro in both Italy and Portugal. In most cases you will be able to withdraw cash upon arrival at your locations - The Euro is easy to pre-arrange here in Australia if you wish. If you need to convert cash overseas we do not recommend that you do it at the airport - your Harvest Journey's Tour Director will give advice to your bus leader about the best locations to do this. How Much Will | Need? Your ticket includes just about everything, the only thing you will need to purchase almost daily is lunch, snacks and drinks. This means that you can quite easily survive on €15 a day (approx $25 AUD), or around €300 (approx. $480 AUD). Taking into account the souvenirs and presents you might buy, $600 AUD will allow you to live comfortably if you are sensible. The best way to make sure you stay on track is: * Give yourself a daily budget * Understand currency conversion * Buy water in bulk with friends from supermarkets + When purchasing souvenirs be reasonable, Prepare a list before leaving home. + Remember your baggage allowance! How Do I Carry It? We do not recommend you carry around large amounts of cash. The best way to keep your money safe and the cheapest conversion rates are by using your own EFTPOS card or similar or purchasing a Travel Money Card from Australia Post or online. Never walk around with more than €200 in cash at any one time. Keep large sums of cash and your cards in a money belt that you wear under your clothing! | We suggest using a cotton money belt. Also, make sure that you place all your items in a plastic zip-lock bag before putting them in your money belt. There is nothing worse than sweat damaged passport and documents. You may consider carrying a wallet or small purse with a small amount of money or coins so you don't continuously have to undress, simply to buy a gelato. This also. means that if you are held up or pickpocketed, they will only have the bare minimum. Never put your passport or wallet in the pockets of your pants, especially cargo pants. These are pick pockets’ favourite targets. Each morning before leaving the hotel, prepare your day pack and wallet with min. amount you'll need for the day ahead Page |13 Tips Make sure your bank knows you are going overseas. Tell them when and where. Give a trusted family member or friend at home your details in case of an emergency. Where possible, make purchases on a credit card or Visa debit. Never let a salesperson take your credit card out of your sight! Check your bank account balances regularly to check for irregular activity. Make a note in your journal of cash withdrawals and purchases. Use ATMs in groups of 3 for safety. Leave a photocopy of all cards at home. When travelling in a larger group, it is important that we all remain in touch with each other so we don't lose anyone. Keeping in touch with those back home will also be important to you, however, if you are not careful you could arrive home with an excessive mobile phone bill Phones All pilgrims are required to have a smartphone with access to data for the WYD pilgrimage. We request that all pilgrims have access to data overseas for safety and practical reasons. Some Australian mobile service providers will offer packages for travel - please check pricing. For those who have an eSim-compatible phone, we recommend purchasing an eSim from Airalo.com because of the data packages this product offers This product was tested by our Pilgrimage Coordinators, while they were in Portugal last year. We will be using WhatsApp for group communication whilst in Europe . The eSim also means that you can message and call home via apps like messenger, facetime and WhatsApp, without changing your phone number. We will send all pilgrims a referral code, which will give you $3 credit. Page| 14 airalo Other Travel Communication Tips Many accommodation sites have Wi-Fi facilities so you can minimise the amount of data you use on your eSim plan. A quick Social Media status update is the best way to inform everyone at home quickly. Many social media apps/websites will recognise that you are logging in from locations that you normally don’t, so make sure you know the answers to your security questions so you don't get locked out.
