TEXT 2
Using social media too much and posting many selfies have caused a rise in narcissism,
according to a new study. Narcissism is when people become very selfish and believe they
are very talented and beautiful. They need attention from other people and think they are
better than anyone else. Researchers at universities at Swansea and Milan found that heavy
users of social media sites showed a 25 per cent rise in narcissism in just four months. The
researchers studied how 74 people aged 18 to 34 used social media and looked at how their
personality changed. They said that posting selfies seemed to increase levels of narcissism in
a way that text messaging does not.
Professors Phil Reed, from the Department of Psychology at Swansea University, said
“There have been suggestions of links between narcissism and the use of selfies on social
media, but until this study, it was not known the growth in narcissism. The results of this
study suggest that posting selfies can increase narcissism.” Professor Reed said that about 20
per cent of people may be at risk of developing narcissism. This is because they need attention
and likes from other people after they post a selfie. They also want to show others how their
lives are better or how they are more beautiful or attractive.
4. What is the writer‟s intention to write the text?
A. To explain what narcissism is.
B. To show his/her views on narcissism.

B. Narcissism increases self-esteem.
C. People do selfies to show their existence.
D. Most people who like selfies need attention.
E. Only beautiful and talented people love selfies.

6. “... it was not known the growth in narcissism.” (Paragraph 2 Which sentence had the
word which is similar with the underlined word above?
A. We need your confirmation if you join us tomorrow.
B. Let me check the addition of the products immediately,

TEXT 3
Nikola Tesla, a Serbian by parentage, began working for the phone company in
Budapest. In 1882, he headed for Paris, where he took a job with the Continental Edison
Company. He was Invited to work stateside after his supervisor wrote a recommendation
praising the young man as a genius on par with Thomas Alfa Edison himself. While he hired
Tesla, Edison thought the man's ideas were "splendid" but "utterly impractical." Edison relied
heavily on tedious experimentation For most of his discoveries, a commitment which some
historians attribute partially to his lack of Formal education. Tesla, in contrast, was an
emotionally driven dreamer with years of engineering Training, which allowed him to work
out theories before physically implementing them.
At same point, Tesla insisted that he could increase the efficiency of Edison‟s
protypical dynamos, and eventually wore down Edison enough to let him try. Edison, Tesla
later claimed, even promised him $50,000 if he succeeded. Tesla worked around the clock for
several months and made a great deal of progress. When he demanded his reward. Edison
claimed the offer was a joke, saying, "When you become a full-fledged American, you will
appreciate a American joke." Edison offered a $10/week raise, instead. Ever prideful, Tesla
quit, and spent the next few months picking up odd jobs across New York City.
Edison's least favourite of Tesla's "impractical" ideas was the concept of using
alternating current (AC) technology to bring electricity to the people. Edison insisted that his
own direct current (DC) system was superior, in that it maintained a lower voltage from
power station to consume, ad was, therefore, safer. But AC technology, which allows the
flow of energy to periodically change direction, is more practical for transmitting massive
quantities of energy, as is required by a large city, or hub of industry, say. At the time, DC
technology only allowed for a power grid with a one-mile radius from the power source. The
conflict between the two methods and their masters came to be known as the War of
Currents. In the end, AC won out. George Westinghouse, an inventor, entrepreneur, and
engineer who had himself been feuding with Edison for years, fulfilled. Tesla's dream of
building a power plant st Niagara Falls to power New York City, and built upon its principles
the same system of local power grids we use today.

TEXT 4
Whales are the largest animal on earth. Bigger than elephants, they may grow 95 feet long,
and weight 150 tons. A baby blue whale, just born, can be 23 feet long and weight 3 tons.
Although whales live in the oceans and can swim like fish, they are not fish. They are
mammals, like cows and elephants. Unlike fish, they bear young alive net as eggs. Their
babies live on their mother‟s milk. They breathe through their lungs and hold their breathe
when they go under water. If they cannot come to the surface to breathe fresh air, they will
drown. They are warm blooded. Fish, however, lay eggs, breathe oxygen in the water and are
cold blooded.
Whales live in all the oceans. In the winter some of them go to warm waters to breed
and in the summer most of them go to cold waters to feed. There are two kinds of whales,
whales with teeth (toothed whales) and whales without teeth (baleen whales). The toothed
whales eat fish and squid, which they can catch with their teeth, although they swallow their
food without chewing it. The baleen whales eat plankton (small sea animals and plants).
When they find plankton, they open their mouths and swim into the plankton. When they
close their mouths, they squeeze out the water and swallow the plankton.
Whales have few enemies. Only human beings and the killer whales attack whales.
And whales do not seem to fight among themselves. They usually live from 20 to 30 years.

14. The difference between whales and fish is that whales .....
A. do not have to come to the surface to get fresh air
B. deliver their young like elephants do
C. will die if they can not get oxygen in the water
D. are mammals that are cold blooded
E. can easily breathe when they are under water

15. Whales occasionally live in warm waters ....

A. to get more food D. to avoid winter
B. to fresh air E. to feed their babbie
C. for reproduction

16. Which of the following is TRUE about whales?

A. Whales are generally 95 feet long and weigh 150 tons
B. Big animals living in the ocean tend to be their enemies
C. Like fish, whales can live in all kinds of water
D. Their life span is usually longer than human beings
E. A new – born baby whale may weight one-fiftieth of its mother

17. From the text we may conclude that ....

A. a whale can eat both squid and plankton
B. toothed whales chew their food before swallowing it.
C. the two types of whales live in different waters
D. baleen whales swallow the water containing plankton
E. each type of whale eats a specific kind of food

PROS & CONS OF A VIRTUAL CONFERENCE
At a time when the world has transitioned into a „digital-everything‟ kind of dynamics, it can
be difficult to hop on the bandwagon without any prior knowledge of a certain shift.
Arranging a virtual conference eliminates the following costs associated with a physical event
– room accommodations, venue insurance, rent, printing marketing materials, food,
beverages, and other unexpected expenses. You‟ll be able to get the job done in less time
because a virtual conference is usually more fast-paced than a regular one. Another benefits
is that preparing a virtual conference is way faster than an old-fashioned event. Last but not
least, in a virtual conference, there‟s no need to stress yourself too much about what you‟re
wearing.

On the other hand, a virtual conference entails the cost of the platform, internet connection,
speaker, and sometimes an entry fee. Virtual meeting also limits the human contact. Although
it saves money, it also saves the fireworks of a well-planned venue. Not everyone is tech-
savvy. A minority of potential buyers might not be able to access your conference because
they don‟t have the skills or resources to do so.

18. What issue is discussed in the text above?

A. The virtual technology development effects business
B. The benefits and the flaws of holding virtual conference
C.The challenges faced by the students and teachers in virtual conference
D. The new ways of holding a virtual event
E. The tendency to hold online conference

Statements True False
Nowadays world has lead a transition into a digital world v
Business owners gains more benefits in virtual conference than in v
old-fashioned one.
Virtual world enables us to feel more excitement in an event. v

20. State whether the statements below true or false based on the text above.
Statements True False
The writer thinks that virtual conference cost nothing at all v
compared to the old fashioned one.
The writer thinks that virtual conference can be acessed by anyone v
despite their ability in coping with virtual technology.
The writer thinks that although there are some benefits in holding v
virtual conference, there are some negative side to consider.

Ketogenic Diet, Is It good?

The ketogenic diet is an eating pattern where you power your body on fat, rather than
on carbohydrates. By minimizing your carbohydrate intake and consuming healthy fats
instead, the ketogenic diet puts you in metabolic state where the liver converts fats into acids
called ketone bodies that it uses for fuel. This process simulates fasting conditions to switch
up your energy supply.
There‟s a reason why the ketogenic is so popular today; it has been shown to result in
several improvements in your health and body composition. The ketogenic diet has long
been understood to affect brain functioning. Evidence also shows that following a keto diet
might slow the spread of tumor cells and even suppress their growth altogether. Moreover,
the ketogenic diet helps reduce your insulin levels. Since the ketogenic diet alters a person‟s
metabolism, many find that following the ketogenic diet seems to help some of the
underlying issues with fertility.
Yet, no diet is perfect, and the ketogenic diet has its share of downsides. The initial weight
loss is usually temporary. Your brain is primed to run on glucose, and limiting this supply
can affect your mental functioning. The ketogenic diet, as with some other diets, requires
careful scrutiny of each meal you eat, which can pose a problem for those with a history of
disordered eating. When you first transition to keto eating, the high-fat, low-carb diet has the
potential to lead to digestive problems like diarrhoea or constipation.

The fish are dying in the Adirondack lakes northern New York State. Fishermen are
worried. This used to be a favourite spot for sport fishing Somehow, every year there is fewer
fish. Some lakes - 6% of them - now have no fish at all. Scientists are beginning to get
worried too. What is killing the fish?
The cause is acid rain. Acid rain is a kind of air pollution. It is caused by factories that
burn coal or oil or gas. These factories send smoke high into the air. The wind often carries
the smoke far from the factories. Some of the unhealthy things in the smoke may come down
with the rain hundreds of miles away. This is what is happening in the Adirondacks. There
are many factories in the Midwestern states. They are sending a lot of smoke into the air. The
wind blows the smoke towards the east. That means toward New York State and the
Adirondack area.
The rain in the Adirondacks is not natural and -lean anymore. It is full of acid
chemicals. When it calls on lakes, it changes them too. The lakes become more acidic. Acid
water is like vinegar or lemon juice. It hurts when it gets into your eyes. It also kills the plants

The ongoing woeful story of the diamond‟s owner continues for decades. An Eastern
European prince gave it to an exotic dancer. But later he became jealous and shot her to
death. Another owner had a car accident and died with his wife and children. Finally, in 1911,
Evalyn Walsh Mclean purchased the Hope Diamond. She was a wealthy American socialite.
She was sometimes unconventional. For example, she had her dog wear the diamond to greet
party guests. She said she did not believe in the diamond‟s curse. However, she suffered
