The heat of the Earth used to produce geothermal energy stems from impressive and spectacular natural phenomena that are intrinsic to our planet. Volcanoes are the most famous natural display of geothermal energy on the planet. The geothermal energy is a renewable resource, as it exploits the abundant Earth’s interior heat and water. Having the use of this natural energy source has important implications for preserving the environment. ADVANTAGES OF USING GEOTHERMAL ENERGY FROM THE VOLCANOES • ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY Geothermal energy is more environmentally friendly than conventional fuel sources such as coal and other fossil fuels. • RENEWABLE Geothermal energy is a source of renewable energy that will last until the Earth is destroyed by the sun. •SUSTAINABLE/STABLE Geothermal provides a reliable source of energy as compared to other renewable resources such as wind and solar power. •RELIABLE Energy generated from this resource is easy to calculate since it does not fluctuate in the same way as other energy sources. HOW CAN WE USE THE ENERGY FROM THE VOLCANO? Magma heats nearby rocks and underground aquifers. Hot water can be released through geysers, hot springs, steam vents, underwater hydrothermal vents, and mud pots. These are all sources of geothermal energy. Their heat can be captured and used directly for heat, or their steam can be used to generate electricity. TWO TYPES OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY Geothermal Heat Pump Geothermal Power Plant HOW DOES THE ENERGY FROM THE VOLCANOES GENERATES ELECTRICITY? Geothermal power plants use steam to produce electricity. The steam comes from reservoirs of hot water found a few miles or more below the earth's surface. The steam rotates a turbine that activates a generator, which produces electricity. Geothermal Heat Pump is a heating/cooling system for buildings that uses a type of heat pump to transfer heat or from the ground, taking advantage of the relative constancy of temperatures of the Earth through the season. GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMPS
Geothermal heat pumps use the earth's constant temperature to heat and cool buildings. Geothermal heat pumps transfer heat from the ground (or water) into buildings during the winter and reverse the process in the summer.
