The Concept of Laro ng Laro

Refers to the traditional or native sports of the Filipinos. They are part of heritage. The
Filipinos, even before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, were very active in sports and
games.

The first “Palaro ng Lahi” was held in Laong, Ilocos Norte, on February 10,1984,
sponsored by the provincial government in cooperation with the DECS(Department of
Education, Culture and Sports). The inclusion of some of our natives games in the Physical
Education curriculum had been approved particularly in the secondary schools.

Today's, “Laro ng Lahi” is recommended as one of the best lead-up games and
activities for students from graders to college level. It is also a way of teaching our students
to patronize indigenous games that were popularized by our natives. It also promotes
fitness and competition. Playing the games in “Laro ng Lahi” helps students develop health
and fitness programs like vigor, flexibility, agility, and endurance.

THREE TYPES OF “LARO NG LAHI ’’

INTRODUCTION

LARO NG LAHI/ FILIPINO GAMES

Filipinos are known for their diverse culture and pleasant traits such as friendliness and
hospitality that can be seen whenever foreign tourists visit Philippines. Aside from its national
practices and traits, people can say that they are truly natives of the Philippines if they know and
have already played Philippine traditional games. In this modern world where technologies are at
its peak of success, let us escape, remember, and reminisce our childhood memories as we
discuss some of the Philippine traditional games. Traditional Filipino games are the kinds of fun
that Filipinos enjoy immensely. These activities only exist in the Philippines, and they're quickly
disappearing along with sense of identity among Filipinos. The games are exciting and provide
children with much-needed exercise while also preserving cultural heritage. Unfortunately, these
activities are slowly losing popularity due to changing attitudes towards Filipino culture overall.
Although globalization has undeniably brought many great benefits to the country over time, it
has also slowly stripped away important aspects of our culture and traditions in recent years. This
shift can be seen in how less people are connected to their cultural roots, as well as the gradual
erosion of traditional values. While we are gradually going into the world of globalization and the
progress it brought to the country is well, on the lope side it has slowly stripped the important things that
are already part of our culture and traditions for several decades. Laro ng lahi But according to several
researches, these traditional Filipino games are very healthy for our body physically, socially and
emotionally. Games like this requires physical endurance and stamina and thus boost your
immune system. It also developed the social aspect which is very vital in child stage
development , playing with other children boost communication skills and confidence. It's very
healthy in a way that it also promotes our cultural sense of identity.Indeed, time changes rapidly
but one thing we can do is to start introducing and promoting these old practices of traditional
games to the younger generation in a way we can help of instilling in them a sense of history.

55 AGAWAN BASE
56

57 Agawan Base or known as “capturing base” is a war-like Filipino game played by two
58 teams with a minimum of three players in which each team are asked to protect their
59 territory from being seized. In order to capture the opponent’s base, a player must step
60 or touch the opponent’s territory without being tagged. This game is usually played in
61 the beach since this game involves running, chasing, and tagging.

99 Pilipinas tinatawag itong Piko.

103 RULELS:

104 -The pamato must not land on any line as the hopper throws it on to any box.

105 -The pamato must not touch the line as the hopper kicks it from one box to another in
106 the diagram.

107 -The hopper's foot must not touch any of the lines, change foot, or take a rest, while
108 hopping.

109 Every player plays the game twice; the first time he begins in his moon, and the second
110 time in his opponent's moon. When he is through, back and forth, then the second part
111 is started. Care must be taken in throwing the pamato into their exact places, in hopping
112 and in kicking it out.

115 CHESS

116 Chess originated from the two-player Indian war game, Chatarung, which
117 dates back to 600 A.D. In 1000 A.D, chess spread to Europe by Persian
118 traders. The piece next to the king was called a ferz in Persian, defined as
119 a male counselor to the king. The Chess Pieces

120 The great game of chess has two opposing sides, light colored and dark
121 colored. The two sides are briefly called White and Black. White always
122 goes first.

123 Each player has 16 pieces:chess pieces

124 1 King

125 1 Queen

126 2 Rooks (or Castles)

127 2 Bishops

128 2 Knights

129 8 Pawns

130 The King moves from its square to a neighboring square, the Rook can
131 move in its line or row, the Bishop moves diagonally, the Queen may move
132 like a Rook or a Bishop, the Knight jumps in making the shortest move that
133 is not a straight one, and the Pawn moves one square straight ahead. But
134 the above moves are only permitted if the square the piece lands on is
135 empty or occupied by a hostile piece. Times when two pieces move at the
136 same time When a hostile piece is "captured," (i.e. removed from the
137 board), In "Castling," Or in "Queening" a pawn. Moreover, the motion of a
138 Rook, Bishop or Queen stops when they strike an occupied square. Thus,
139 a Bishop on c1 may go to any square in the diagonal c1, d2, e3, f4, g5, h6
140 unless one of these squares is occupied, if e3 is occupied, f4, g5, and h6
141 are obstructed and the Bishop may not be moved there. The Rook, Bishop
142 or Queen, however, can "capture" the obstruction, provided it is a hostile
143 piece, by putting the moving piece on the square occupied by the
144 obstruction and removing the latter into the box. Also, the other pieces,
145 King, Knight and Pawn, may capture hostile men. The King or the Knight,
146 whenever they have the right to move to the square held by a hostile man,
147 the Pawn, however, but not with a diagonal move forward to a neighboring
148 square. All pieces are subject to capture except the King. Its life is sacred;
149 the player must defend it, it perishes only when no possible resource can
150 save it from capture. "Checkmate" occurs when a player cannot save his
151 King from capture. When this occurs, the game is over. The rules listed
152 above are not complete, and are too brief, but they give a vivid impression
153 of the Chess struggle. We shall now explain the chess rules in detail and at
154 length in order to illuminate the various logical consequences that come in
155 to play.

156 LUKSONG BAKA

157

168 taya(baka).

169 All players are to jump over the baka until all the players have jumped. Once the first set
170 of jumping over the baka is done, the baka player will slowly rise up after jumping over
171 the baka player. Only the hands of the jumper may touch the back of the person who is
172 bent over.

183 LUKSONG LUBID

184

185 Chinese Garter is a Filipino game that tests the stamina, balance, agility, and jumping
186 skills of the players. It is usually practiced and played by Filipino girls during their school
187 breaks or leisure time. To play this game, there must be two players who will hold both
188 ends of the horizontally stretched garter while other players cross over it. The main
189 objective of the game is to cross the garter without touching the garter by any possible
190 means. The stretched garter will be raised higher for every round.

211 TEKS
212

213 Teks is a Filipino game usually played by Filipino children by collecting these cards that
214 contains comic strips and texts. This game is played by tossing it to the air until it
215 reaches the ground.Teks is a card game played by children in the Philippines. The
216 objective of the game is that the player makes a bet which side of the card will show
217 after flicking or tossing the cards in the air. Once the cards hit the ground, they are
218 flipped upwards through the air (using the thumb and the forefinger.

226 Rayearth at Sailormoon.
230 ay isang odd-even game.

274 JACK- EN- POY

275

276 Sa Ingles, ang bansag dito ay Rock-Paper-Scissors.

277 Jack En Poy is a Filipino chant and hand game version of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The
278 names, Jack and Poy, are not based on actual. people but are derived from janken pon,
279 ancient hand games from Japan that spread through Asia after the 17th century. The
280 rules of game are just simple. The rock beats the scissor, scissor beats the paper and
281 paper beats the rock. Players use their right hand and form it into a fist. Then players
282 simultaneously form one of the three shapes. If they coincidentally throw the same
283 shape then the game is tied.

284

285 Here in the Philippines, Jack N’ Poy is used as a preliminary elimination

286 procedure in order to proceed to another kind of game. Whoever wins get to proceed to
287 another part of the game.

309 PALO SEBO

310

311 Palo Sebo is a traditional Philippine game, usually played in the fiesta, where young
312 kids climb greased up poles to get the prize placed on top. Grease monkeys?.
320 mahabang kawayan.
At

339

340 Word Factory is a word search game for two to eight players in which players have a
341 limited time to find words in a random selection of letters. Words found by more than
342 one player are disqualified when scoring the game. The player with the highest number
343 of eligible words wins.

344 Set up the game

345 Give each player a piece of paper and a writing utensil, which is used to record the
346 words found during the game. Arrange the letter cubes inside the plastic case, and
347 when everyone is ready, shake the case so that the cubes are mixed and settle in a
348 five-by-five grid. Turn over an hourglass, or start a timer set for 10 minutes.

349 Search for words

350 Each player independently searches for words in the grid. To use a word, its letters
351 must be adjacent to each other in the grid. Each letter cube may only be used once per
352 word. Only words written on the paper in the allotted time count for the player.

353 Read each list of words

354 When 10 minutes have passed, all players stop searching for words. One player reads
355 the words listed on the player’s sheet. If any other players have that word, every player
356 must mark that word off their lists. Players may challenge the spelling or valid
357 arrangement of each word. Consult a dictionary to confirm spelling. Misspelled or invalid
358 words are marked off the player’s list. The next player reads, and the process is
359 repeated until every player has revealed the words found.

360 Tally the score

361 Player count up the total number of words not disqualified on their lists. The player with
362 the highest total wins.

363 TRUMPO

364

365 Trumpo or turumpo refers to both the toy and the traditional game many Filipinos play.
366 Or, I'd rather say, rural kids used to play since the game is now an almost lost tradition.
367 The toy's form is spherical at the top that gradually tapers to conical shape at the tip. A
368 hand-crafted wooden trumpo with string.

370 hinahangaang palabas noong 90s. Ito ay pinamamagatang “Tropang Trumpo” na
371 pinagbibidahan nina Ogie Alcasid, Michael V, Gellie De Belen at Carmina Villaroel.
380 del Sur. Nasa kanilang lugar rin nagmula ang pinakamalaking trumpo sa Pilipinas;
381 tinatawag itong Batige.

389 teams are required to play this game, the hitter and the fetcher.Played outside on the
390 ground where you dig a small square hole (slanted) where you put the small wood so it
391 sticks out.

403 paghagis at paghataw.

405 THE GAMES OF THE GENERALS

406

407 It is designed for two players, each controlling an army, and a neutral arbiter
408 (sometimes called a referee or an adjutant) to decide the results of "challenges"
409 between opposing playing pieces, that like playing cards, have their identities hidden
410 from the opponent. Game of the Generals. Box cover of the 1981 version.

411 A player moves their flag to the other player's side of the board. A player must reach the
412 other side of the board in a spot where the other player can't capture it on their next
413 turn. The black player has moved their flag to the other side of the board and has won
414 the game.

415 Game of the Generals (also named GG, GOG, The Generals, or Salpakan in its native
416 language) was invented in the Philippines by Sofronio H. Pasola, Jr. as an educational
417 war game. The game features of a 9 × 8 square board and two players with 21 pieces
418 each.

419 "Rules of the Game" describes the rise of the American-born Chinese character
420 Waverly Jong as a young chess prodigy and her relationship with her immigrant
421 Chinese mother. One theme of "Rules of the Game" is manipulation as a rule for

426

Kapag mayroong nakatawid at

473 TUMBANG PRESO

474

475 Tumbang Preso is a unique traditional game in the Philippines that is favorite among
476 Filipino children. The name of this sport is derived from the Filipino words Tumba, which
477 means 'to fall' and preso, which means 'prisoner', translating to 'fallen prisoner'. The
478 game is played on backyards, streets, and open areas.

497 Walking Tall on Kadang-Kadang

498 Kadang-kadang is one of the old games in the Philippines. Rural kids were playing it for
499 as long as our folks can remember. But, the game was officially acknowledged only in
500 1969 during a local sports event.

501 Kadang-Kadang or karang (in Bisaya), and Tiyakad (in Tagalog) means Bamboo Stilts

502 game in English. This game originated in Cebu, Central Philippines.
503

505 First of all, the game requires eight participants. These participants are divided into two
506 teams. Each team is composed of 4 members.  Moreover, the players prepare 4 pieces
507 (or two sets) of bamboo poles. These poles are of equal heights, say 10 feet long. And,
508 each pole is fitted with a foot-size stepladder.
509
510
511 The Mechanics

512 1.The goal: The two teams should successfully traverse a 100-meter course. Each
513 course is marked at every 25th meter.

514 2.The first player on each team stands behind the starting point. While the second player
515stands on the 25th-meter mark. The third player waits at the 50th-meter mark. And, the last
516player on the 75th mark.

517 3.At the signal of “Get set”, the first players stand ready behind the starting line. They
518now hold their respective stilts.

519 4.At the signal of “Go”, the players mount their stilts and start walking towards the
52025th-meter mark. Then, they get off the stilts for the second players to continue the course
521to the 50th mark. This process is repeated until the fourth players reach the finish line (or
522the 100th-meter).

523 5.The team that completes the course first is the winner.

524 6.Each player is allowed only two errors. This means that if the player falls off the stilts
525more than twice, his team loses the game.

526 Skills Needed

527 Balance and concentration are the two most important skills a player possesses in
528 playing kadang-kadang. But, of course, teamwork is also necessary to successfully
529 bring the game to the finish line.

530 BAHAY-BAHAYAN
531

532 Bahay-Bahayan You'll probably missed half of your childhood if you don't experience
533 playing Bahay-bahayan. This is a role-playing game where children act as members of
534 an imaginary family, sometimes to the extent that one of them becomes the family "pet".
535 Usually there was a role for a mother then there is a father too. I was often the son back
536 then. Truly fun games indeed.
540 bahay. This game is best played inside the house during rainy days when the lids got no more games to
541 play. This game is a role playing game. The cast of the game usually includes a mother, a father and a
542 son or a daughter. The number of players depend on the ones that want to join the game. This game is a
543 certified Filipino Bored Game. It is usually played by kids ages 3-7 years old. It's a fun game, especially
544 when you don't have any more games to teach your children.

554 LANGIT-LUPA
555

556 Langit-lupa is a Filipino game played by at least 10 players in which each

557 players should avoid being tagged by the “it” (taya) through standing on
558 higher levels (langit). The “it” should chase other players while running on
559 the level ground. Players are allowed to run on the ground (lupa) and climb on
560 objects (langit). The it can only tag players who are on the ground and not those
561 who are on higher objects. The player who gets tagged becomes the new it and
562 the it becomes one of the players who gets chased. Langit Lupa is a twist on a
563 running around game where one is considered taya or untouchable if they are in
564 an elevated place. The taya then chants a rhyme and at the end of it, everyone
565 must run to a new elevated position while avoiding being tagged by the taya.

566 RULES

567 1. The taya is determined through sudden death Jack En Poy (Rock, Paper,
568 Scissors) match-ups. Person who loses the last game is the taya.

569 2. All players run to elevated positions

570 3. Taya chants Langit, lupa impyerno, im - im - impyerno Sak-sak puso tulo
(ok, kinda gruesome
572 but so is the meaning of Ring around the Rosy. You can invent your own
573 rhyme in your home language.)

574 4. At the end of the chant, everyone must run to new positions and the
575 taya must tag someone. The tagged player now becomes the taya.

576 5. And repeat!
