CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale

One of the dilemmas among junior high school completers in enrolling in

the senior high school program is what track and strand to choose from. With all

the interesting tracks and strands the school is offering, a student must consider

many factors before choosing one. In the study of Albuencia et al. (2008),

students’ career choice is influenced by a variety of key factors such as family

support, teacher, peer, environment, and aptitude. Thus, before choosing a

particular track and strand, one must first evaluate himself based on the

aforementioned factors.

Choosing a particular specialization in the Senior High School under the K

to 12 Program is a respond to educational globalization where a 13-year program

is found to be the best period for learning under basic education. It is also the

recognized standard for students and professionals globally. In the Senior High

School grade (Grades 11 and 12), core subjects, applied subjects will be

strengthened together with area of specializations from Academic, Technical-

Vocational and Livelihood, and Sports track to provide sufficient time for mastery

of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for

tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and

entrepreneurship.
2

Lourdes National High School, a pioneering school to offer Turo-Turismo

program in the country, offers both academic and TVL track with specializations

in Bread and Pastry Production, Housekeeping Services, Front Office Services,

Food and Beverage Services, Computer Systems Servicing, and Electrical

Installation and Maintenance. Thus, the students have the variety of choices on

what specialization to choose from.

By this, the researchers would like to determine the advantage of

choosing Electrical Installation and Maintenance as their specialization. The

findings of this study would hope to enlighten most especially the students in

choosing their specialization when they would reach in the Senior School level.

Social Learning Theory of Career Choice

This study anchored on the following theories that explain the impact of

Electrical Installation and Maintenance to student as their specialization.

Combining Theory (Gibbon, 2008) is one of the theories that explain the

learning skills in an electric circuits course. This theory states the changes were

designed to reduce the failure rate in later years by better preparation of the

students and also to filter out, in the first years, the student with no prospects of

completing the degree programmed. According to this theory, analysis of the

student’s response indicates by an improving their knowledge and skills to obtain

a good job in that future. In relation to the study, through expressing their
3

knowledge, students can learn and be influenced by their teachers, parents,

friends and other people surrounding them.

According to the perspective of this, students’ behavior is in terms of

continuous reciprocal interaction between skills, and knowledge, because it

encompasses opportunities, memorable/skilled, motivation. “Combining Theory

“spans both skilled and knowledge frameworks.

Significance of choosing Electrical Course Theory (Basco,2008), It

points out preparation for taking Engineering in college on the students at

National Polytechnic College of science And Technology. According to this

theory, the researchers conducted this study to find out that choosing Electrical

Installation and Maintenance (EIM) in preparation for taking Engineering in

College for EIM students at National Polytechnic College. In relation to the study,

if the students have willingness and seriousness in learning the skills of electrical,

students can easily comprehend and learn from it. The student who has skills in

electrical might depend on the security, and teachers guide the way of teaching.

Since learning about skills or improving their knowledge, students of EIM should

prior the observation, and willingness to learn every different skill.

Review of Related Literature

This review presents the concept and article which are related to the

present study. This chapter includes the presentation of the related literature
4

which focuses on the Impact of Electrical Installation and Maintenance to

students as their chosen specializations.

Triyono (2020), stated that Most electricians institution in Indonesia have

limitations In terms of Quality human resources, facilities, and infrastructure that

meets standards, lack of cooperation with industry, curricula that are in line with

work needs, and weak in modern work culture on campus. It is ironic considering

that Vocational Education is designed to prepare graduates who are ready to

work. This article will comprehensively evaluate the relationship and compatibility

between TVL and the world of work in the field of Electrical engineer graduation.

Another is Eze and Ekuma (2016), The research sought to identify the skill

improvement needs of Electrical Installation trade teachers in technical college

for productive employment. The teachers also need to improve their teaching of

college students to enable them to adjust to the world of paid employment or self-

reliance on graduation.

Onoh and Onyebuenyi(2016) Electrical Installation and Maintenance work

skills like planning the layout and Installation of wiring, Testing of Electrical work

for safety, Competence with tools effectiveness use of materials, inspection of

Electrical Installation, Interpretation of wiring drawing and the likes are highly

needed for job creation. It was therefore recommended amongst other that all the

identified skills should be integrated into the curriculum of technical colleges for
5

training of students; Government should endeavor to finance and equip

Technical College Workshops as to encourage move training and equipment of

students with necessary skills for job creation and self-reliance upon graduation

in Ehugu State.

Linson (2007) mentioned that the ultimate goal of Vocational Technical

Educational training is for the acquisition of knowledge, attitude and practical

skills for sustainable development. The training of Vocational Technical

Education students is based on the production of goods and services that are not

only relevant to themselves but to the society stated that the acquisition of

lifelong practical skills calls for effective and efficient teaching strategies,

appropriate evaluation methods and utilization of standards teaching materials;

tools, machine, equipment to ensure the production of desired students with

practical skills.

Students are interested and positive feeling in the Electrical Installation and

Maintenance to know their knowledge, and Skills. The engagement of the

students skilled would help students to learn for their future jobs. Good

relationships between teachers and students help in the productivity of students.

Review of Related Studies

The occurrence of Impact of Electrical Installation and Maintenance to EIM

students. With this given situation studies have been conducted to discover the

root of this problem and arrive at the Impacts related to it.

Improving students Acquisition of Practical skills in Electrical Installation and

Maintenance “, The purpose of the study was to identify strategies for Improving

students Acquisition of Practical skills in Electrical Installation and Maintenance

word trade in Technical College of Kano state with a new to finding out ways or

optimizing Practical skills acquisition among students. A descriptive survey was

used as the recommendation were made; Teachers of Electrical Installation and

Maintenance work trade should continue to adopt appropriate teaching strategies

identified in the study for Improving acquisition of practical skills by the students

in Technical Colleges; and identified strategies for assessing practical skills of

students in Electrical Installation and Maintenance work trade should be

continously used by Reacher’s in Technical Colleges.

7

In the year Moses ( 2007) in his study entitled “Industrial Installation Skills

and Job Performance of Graduates of Electrical Installation and Maintenance

works”, This study was conducted to determine level of skills acquired and Job

Performance of Graduates of Electrical Installation and Maintenance work (EIM)

trade of Technical Colleges in Industrial Installation in north Eastern Nigeria with
