3.6 Waterproof Microphone Unit: NVT-157 (Option)

3.6.1 Selection of mounting location
Waterproof Microphone Units collect conversations about controlling the ship and other voices
through the public addressor in the wing. The locations of Waterproof Microphone Units
should be carefully selected so that they can collect vital voice communications. The selected
locations should meet the following conditions.

3.6.1.1 Recommended Location

Although the number of waterproof microphones needed depends on the wing width, in
most cases, the wings can be covered by two waterproof microphones. The following is
the recommended location for mounting waterproof microphones.

1) The overhead panel near the talkback equipment.

3.6.1.2 Note on selection

Consider the followings when selecting a location for mounting a Waterproof Microphone
Unit. Waterproof microphones can collect conversations within a radius of 2.5m. Any
obstacles or sources of noise (60dB or more) should be kept out of this range.

1) The waterproof microphone unit should be away from any ventilator or draft.
2) The waterproof microphone unit should be away from electric apparatuses such as the
RADAR, radio communication equipment, and so on that may emit an excessive
electromagnetic field.
3) The waterproof microphone unit should be free from excessive vibrations.
4) The waterproof microphone unit should be in a compass safety distance of 0.7m.

3.6.2 Fastening a Waterproof Microphone Unit

Mount a Waterproof Microphone Unit on a bulkhead in a wing. The unit has 2 holes (φ10mm)
on its sides. Insert M8 steel bolts in them and fasten the unit with them.
It has a label for the unit number on it. Confirm the location of the label and make sure that the
unit number on the label is equal to what is written in the instruction drawing (see Fig. 3-10).

10.5 Recording Data

Signals of sensors, bridge conversations, VHF communications, and RADAR images are
recorded in chronological order to the final recording medium in the Protective Capsule
Unit via the Recording Control Unit. However, the information on the initial settings of the
system configuration is recorded before the equipment is shipped from a JRC factory or at
the time of its installation on the ship.

The Recording Control Unit records such signals with time-stamps at an interval of 0.01
seconds.

10.5.1 Timing of Data Acquisition

When and how such signals are recorded onto the Protective Capsule Unit varies with
their types.

1) Data sentences from sensors / devices:

The signals from sensors / devices are recorded onto the Protective Capsule Unit as
they are received.

2) Bridge conversations:
The signals of the conversations in the bridge are pooled, and then recorded at an
interval of 1 minute in the form of a data stream (not as a file) onto the Protective
Capsule Unit.

3) VHF communications:
The signals of the radio communications are pooled, and then recorded at an
interval of 1 minute in the form of a data stream (not as a file) onto the Protective
Capsule Unit.

4) RADAR images:
The signals of the RADAR images are pooled, and recorded at an interval of 15
seconds in the form of a data stream (not as a file) onto the Protective Capsule Unit.

10.5.2 Recording Capacity

Any data stream is recorded to the final recording medium in the Protective Capsule
Unit. For each type of data, the memory area is assigned in the final recording medium
and can store up to 12 hours’ recording in the specific format depicted below.

1) Data acquired from sensors or devices

Up to 24 sentences with the maximum number of 82 characters in each sentence.

(i.e. approx. 2200 characters per second)

2) Bridge conversation data:

Up to 315 kB in audio data size per minute for each channel (a channel consists
of 3 microphones). The maximum number of channels is 3 (i.e., 3 channels
accounts for 9 microphones).

Japan Radio Co., Ltd. 75

Doc No.: H-7ZPJD0242B / Inst_guide.doc
JCY-1700 VOYAGE DATA RECORDER / Installation Guideline

3) VHF communication data

Up to 180 kB in a single audio data size per minute for each channel (a channel
consists of 3 VHF radiotelephones).

4) RADAR image data

For a single frame size, up to 200 kB per 15 seconds.

Data are recorded continuously, and when they are overlimited, the old ones are
deleted.

10.5.3 Memory Assignment of Each Data Format

The Protective Capsule contains a solid state Flash Memory array, which stores data.
The Protective Capsule Unit receives data from the Recording Control Unit via a
TCP/IP-based network. The received data are then recorded to their corresponding
memory areas assigned to the final recording medium in the Protective Capsule Unit.

The memory areas are assigned for the following data categories.

1) Settings of the system configuration

2) Sensor data in the form of IEC61162-1/2
3) Audio signal data of bridge conversations (ch #1: microphones 1-3)
4) Audio signal data of bridge conversations (ch #2: microphones 4-6)
5) Audio signal data of bridge conversations (ch #3: microphones 7-9)
6) Radio communication data from the VHF radio communication equipment (VHF
1-3)
7) RADAR video data
