2 Student A reads the first sentence. Having done so, they
put all their tokens onto what they think is the correct
preposition to complete the sentence. They may divide
the tokens as they wish between prepositions. The other
students then follow in turn, adding their own tokens.
The teacher gives the correct answer and students keep

any tokens in the wrong circle(s). Student B then reads
the next sentence, placing their tokens first this time.
Students work down the list of sentences in turn. The
teacher circulates to check students’ understanding and
memory of the phrasal verbs.
3 Once all the sentences have been completed, the
student with the most tokens left is the winner.

Adaptation and extension

• Students can be encouraged to make their own
sentences to add to those provided. These new
sentences would then be read out in the same way,
but the student who had written it wouldn’t place their
tokens in that round.
• After each round, the student who has lost the most
tokens on that question has to make their own sentence
with the phrasal verb in question. If the sentence is
correct, they win back one token.
