1.0 PURPOSE OF THE WECO UNION GAUGE KIT
Weeo Union Components are subjected to harsh environments as well as makeup and
breakout routines that can cause wear at unpredictable rates. Although Weco Union
Components were designed with some wear allowance, regular inspection of wear must
be practiced to insure that component wear limits are not exceeded. Once the
allowable wear on any component in the union assembly is exceeded, the part is not
suitable for its maximum working pressure and must be discarded from service.
The Weco Union Gauge Kit allows for inspection of critical component features to insure
integrity at maximum working pressure. There are six union gauges in each kit
contained within a portable case made of impact resistant materials. Proper use of
these kits will reliably detect whether parts are worn past their allowable wear limits.
The kit can also contain a Go ~ No Go Gauge to evaluate the wear on swivel joint ball
races,
2.0 WECO UNION GAUGE KIT CONTENTS AND
DESIGNATION
Each kit includes six gauges designated as gauges 1 - 6 in Table 1 below. The gauge
part names may be correlated to the specific gauge numbers in section 5.1 at the end of
this manual. Each gauge has one component measurement area to check, except
gauge #5, which is used twice: for the male hub thickness on a detachable sub, and for
the wear on the retainer segments.
‘The No-Go gauges are designed to not screw into or go into an
acceptable part. Detail application is given in the following pages.

3.0 GAUGE TESTING PROCEDURES
IMPORTANT: All parts must be thoroughly cleaned before
inspection.
NOTE
3.1.1 GAUGE #1 - WING NUT TESTING PROCEDURE
1. Try to screw gauge # 1 into the wing nut until gauge # 1 is hand
tight.
2. Count the number of turns it takes to unscrew gauge #1 out of the
wing nut,
3. If gauge #1 goes around more than one full revolution without disengaging
from the wing nut, the wing nut must be discarded due to excessively worn
threads.
4. If gauge #1 disengages from the wing nut before it completes one full
revolution, the nut is not worn past its’ allowable wear limit and may still be
ised.
dig into the flanks of the thread and make the wing nut appear to be
good. Tapping the gauge will help center it to give a true indication of
the wing nut's condition. In addition, if the flank of the lead-in thread

3. Ifthe groove is not visible at full engagement, the wing nut must
be discarded since the minor diameter exhibits excessive wear.

5.0 GAUGE TESTING CONCLUSION
The end user is responsible for the frequency of gauge testing. The frequency of tests
should be proportional to the amount of makeups and breakouts that occur on a regular
basis. When in doubt that a given part is past its allowable wear, always use the
conservative approach and discard the part in question.
5.1 GAUGE CALIBRATION
Each kit contains copies of the calibration record for each of the gauges and it is the
responsibility of the end user to insure that the calibration of the gauges is kept current.
