This activity consists of two phases. In the first phase they will have no supervision and they will be free to form
a production line as they wish, without the chance to classify the lego pieces. On a paper sheet they will take
time of the whole process.

In the second phase, the 5S methodology will have to be applied. The students will have to classify the lego
pieces by size and color; also, they are going to be asked to make an inventory according to the daily demand.
Taking time of the process will also be required in this phase in order to compare the results from before and
after the implementation of the 5S methodology. A team leader will be chosen in each team.

Sort (seiri):

This first step consists of eliminating everything that’s not necessary on the work space. In this case, the

production line simulation. Leave only essential elements such as desks, chairs, and materials related to the
assignment.

Straighten (seiton):

In this step, the student must organize the elements in an efficient way. Define specific areas to each part of
the production process and make sure that the needed tools are located near their respective area in order to
avoid unnecessary movements.

Shine (seiso):

Once that everything is organized, the student may proceed to clean each lego piece as well as the work table.
Make sure that every surface is clean and neat.

Standardize (seiketsu):

The fourth step is to standardize. The students must set clear standards to maintain organization and neatness
in their working area. They must create their own rules to keep the production line in order. This may include
cleaning procedures, security protocols, maintaining requirements, etc.

Sustain (shitsuke):

Finally, the last “S” is about keeping the discipline in order to guarantee the improvements implemented. The
team leader will have to encourage responsibility and participation from every person involved in the production
line simulation.
