The background situation of Health services in Makukuba community.
Health department is one of the most important program needed as we plan to change the living standards of people in the 9 villages. The area has a total population of 6,500 both children and adults living in the 9 villages that makes up Makukuba parish/ Ward. In all the 9 villages the nearby health center to give medical services to people are in a distance of 5 to 6 miles. To make matters worse, Makukuba parish communities has no a reliable transport means but mainly hired private motor cycles as Boda-Boda (Motor cycle) and use of bicycles. For so many years pregnant women and children suffer most to reach to hospitals and its more worse when emergency cases happens in night hours. Death rate are high among pregnant women as a result of such circumstances. The research we made about the area further shows that; Over 45% of the men have more than one wife. Nearly 60% of community members see malaria as the greatest sickness; HIV/AIDS and stomach problems rank the second at 26% Nearly 70% get water from ponds and unprotected wells yet only 9% treat drinking water. Over 30% have no pit latrines and don’t see the importance of latrines. 82% don’t wash hands after toilet use. 85% have no idea on nutrition. Over 50% have no idea on family planning or contraceptives. Above 50% of the women deliver babies in communities with Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA). Becoming a T.B.As, depends on how many children you have delivered. Nearly 50% of community children never had any immunization.
The general health picture of Health situation in Uganda.
Health in Uganda refers to the health of the population of Uganda. As of 2016 health report, life expectancy at birth in Uganda was 60 years, which was lower than in any other country in the East African Community except Burundi. Uganda's healthcare performance is still ranked as one of the worst in the world by the World Health Organization (WHO), the country is ranked 186th out of 191 nations. Ugandan's health and life expectancy is among the lowest across the globe. In Uganda, one in every 200 births ends the mother's life, around 1 million people are living with HIV and although malaria accounts for 14% of all deaths, less than 10% of children under five are sleeping under insecticide-treated” 1. The probability of a child dying before reaching age five was 5.5 %. 2. The Total health expenditure as a percentage of gross domestic product was 7.2 % in 2014. 3. In 2015, only 47 % of Ugandan women receive the recommended four antenatal care visits, and only 42 % of births are attended by skilled health personnel. 4. Among the poorest 20 percent of the population, the share of births attended by skill health personnel was 29 %, compared to 77 % among the wealthiest 20 percent of the population. 5. Wikipedia Report - for 2016, the five leading causes of death in Uganda included communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS with an estimated 1.5 million people in Uganda were infected with HIV, and the HIV prevalence rate in the country was at 7.2 %. Secondly malaria- Uganda has the highest incidence rate of malaria in the world, with 478 people out of 1000 population being afflicted per year. What is our plan as shared Love Uganda?
The organization, started on plans of building a community Health center to extend better health services to beneficiaries. We aim at reducing the distance from 5 to 6 miles people walk to access health services. It’s also our plan to reduce on death rates among pregnant mothers/ women due to long distances they have walk. We want the health center to be a center of awareness programs on a number health issues, such as importance of circumcising male, Proper child feeding, Child immunization among others. What has been done so far by shared Love Uganda? 1. We have secured some land space for health center construction 2. As a way to doing something to save the situation, the organization has been organizing free medical camp outreaches in partnership with local rotary clubs. Per day of the camp we could work on 300 people. 3. We have built some small facilities in two metallic containers to start with as we work on future expansion 4. 4 single rooms for health workers to attend patients at night have been built 5. Digging and laying brick wall for pit latrine plus roofing Goal: To enhance communities Access better medical Services to vulnerable people for healthy living especially mothers and children.
