CONSTRUCTION PROCESS OF A SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

The sustainable construction process is a comprehensive approach that seeks to

minimize environmental impact and maximize resource efficiency during all stages
of the project, from design to demolition. This type of construction is based on
sustainability principles, such as energy conservation, responsible use of
materials and waste reduction.
Here are the key steps in the sustainable construction process:
 Planning and design: The first step is to conduct careful planning and
detailed design that incorporates sustainability principles. This involves
considering factors such as building location, solar orientation, energy
efficiency, use of green materials, water management and indoor
environmental quality.
 Material selection: Priority should be given to the use of sustainable and
low environmental impact materials. This implies using recycled or
recyclable materials, certified wood, local products, non-toxic paints and
coatings, among others. In addition, the use of materials that generate
harmful emissions during their production or useful life should be
minimized.
 Energy efficiency: It is essential to integrate strategies to reduce energy
consumption in construction. This may include the use of high quality
thermal insulation, efficient ventilation systems, LED lighting, use of natural
light, installation of solar panels and design of efficient air conditioning
systems.
 Water management: It is important to implement measures to reduce water
consumption and properly manage water resources. This may include
installing rainwater harvesting systems, using low-flow devices on faucets
and showerheads, and designing sustainable landscaping that requires
less irrigation.
 Waste management: During construction, practices should be implemented
to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste generated. This may include
separating materials into different categories, donating reusable materials,
using recycled materials in construction, and contracting recycling services.
 Indoor environmental quality: Sustainable construction must ensure high
environmental quality inside the building. This implies using materials that
do not emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ensuring good ventilation,
controlling humidity and promoting the entry of natural light. In addition,
aspects such as acoustics, thermal comfort and ergonomics must be
considered.
 Maintenance and operation: Once construction is complete, it is important
that building owners and occupants adopt sustainable practices in
maintenance and operation. This may include efficient energy
management, water conservation, proper waste management, and
promoting sustainable behaviors among users.
