Plug ‘N Trunk Application Notes for Radius SP50, SM120 and M1225 (2/1/99)

The following Radius radios are compatible with the Plug 'N Trunk series boards: The correct part
numbers for the radios are:

SP50 (Up to 4 Groups, Multiple Non-Trunked Channels): PT-SP50

SM120 (Up to 4 Groups, Multiple Non-trunked Channels): PT-SM120
M1225 (Up to 4 Groups, Multiple Non-Trunked Channels)(16Ch Max): PT-M1225

Radius Software: There are several parameters that must be provided to the ETrunk board for it
to function correctly in a given system. These include the number of channels to
trunk, the location of a conventional/talk around channel(if any) and the location
of any additional trunking groups (if using a multiple group board). In addition
the dealer can control the trunking speeds in three ranges and, if using the
multiple group board, may also control which call progress tones are heard by
the user.

All of the above functions are ultimately programmed into the Radius radio via
the normal RSS software. In order to use the "PT" series boards, the
dealer must have Version 3.0 or later RSS software and version 7.1 or
later ETrunk programming software. For the M1225, version 7.3 or
higher is required. (Available free at www.etrunk.com)

Unlike other ETrunk boards, the "PT" series uses ETrunk programming
software to generate a file that the RSS software can read or "import". The
file is created in the ETrunk software as a result of the dealers answering
programming questions on the screen. These questions are covered in detail
below. There is no need to physically program the "PT" series board,
therefore no programmer is required. The board gets the programming
information directly from the host radio whenever the radio is powered up.

Board Installation:

M1225: Remove the volume control knob. Gently lift the exposed plastic tab located
underneath the radio and slide the cover off. Locate the two shielded enclosures
behind the radio’s LCD display. The “PT” board will mount on top of these with the
double sided tape provided. First, locate the small surface mount option connector just
to the front of these shields. THIS CONNECTOR IS EXTREMELY FRAGILE SO
BE VERY GENTLE WITH IT! The brown portion of the connector is hinged on the
right side, so using a small tool GENTLY lift up on the middle of the brown section until

Page -1-
the brown section pivots to a vertical position. DO NOT GO PAST VERTICAL OR
YOU WILL DESTROY THE CONNECTOR! Locate the flex connector supplied on
the “PT” board and GENTLY place it into this connector with the contacts facing
DOWN. Gently flip the brown portion of the connector back until it locks in position
on the flex circuit. Be sure the flex circuit is in straight. Remove the protective film
from the double sided tape on the component side of the "PT" board. Connect the
“PT” board on top of the two shields and close up the radio. Proceed to "Board
Programming" steps below.

SM120: Remove the volume control knob and the rubber plug that is located below the channel
display in the middle of the heat sink. Gently press the exposed plastic tab located
underneath the rubber plug and slide the cover off the radio. Locate the "PT" board
noting that one end has an eight pin connector and the other has a six pin connector.
Find the mating sockets behind the LCD on the SM120's main board. Remove the
protective film from the double sided tape on the component side of the "PT" board.
While aligning the connectors, plug the "PT" board into the radio and replace the cover,
rubber plug and volume control knob. Proceed to "Board Programming" steps below.

SP50: The SP50 Plug 'N Trunk board mounts in the radio's option compartment and
attaches with a flex circuit supplied with the board.

Open the radio per the manufacturer's instructions. Locate the spring metal clip that is
located on the side of the radio opposite the PTT switch. Carefully remove the spring
clip that holds the flex circuit to the front case assembly.

Take the ETrunk PT-SP50(or G) board and locate the two alignment tabs of the
board’s pcb into the die cast heat sink assembly. Slip the board into the cavity and
snap the clip located on the shield of the Etrunk board over the small catch on the side
of the heat sink.

Locate the loose end of the flex circuit coming from the front panel. Remove the
protective strip that covers the free end of the flex circuit supplied with the ETrunk
board. Align the two flex strips a shown in the diagram below being certain to keep the
square keyways together. When correctly aligned, press the front panel flex circuit
down onto the ETrunk flex circuit at the adhesive strip.

Slide the two flex circuits over the two tabs present on the radio PC Board and secure
the spring clip. Be certain the alignment is correct.

Programming “PT” Boards:

In order to program the correct information into the radio for trunking, ETrunk Programming
Software Version 7.1(SP50 & SM120) or later (7.3 for M1225) is required. Motorola RSS
software version 3.0 or later is also required. This software will generate a file that is able to be
imported by the RSS software.

To load the ETrunk Programming software, simply create a subdirectory on your hard disk
called C:\ETRUNK. Copy all the files form the supplied floppy disk to this subdirectory.
Change to the \ETRUNK directory and type "MENU"(without quotes) and then hit the
<Enter> key. The software should then load and show a copyright notice. You may exit out
and resume the instructions below.

Start the Radius MRSS software program for the SP50, SM120 or M1225. Locate the file
path you have used for archiving radio information. It is normally
"C:\MRSS\SP50\ARCHIVE\" for SP50, C:\MRSS\SM50\ARCHIVE\ for SM120, or
“C:\MRSS\1225\ARCHIVE\” for M1225. If it is not, please write down the exact path as it is
shown in the RSS software. This path will be needed in the ETrunk software.

Go to the directory that contains the ETrunk Programming Software and type "MENU". When
the software loads, on the Main Menu, type a P or use the up/down arrow keys to highlight the

Page -3-
Plug 'N Trunk Board Programming. Please answer the following questions as shown in the
software:

1) Choose the radio type from the available list by typing the number next to the radio
being trunked. (Versions of 7.2 or older do not support M1225)

2) Enter the maximum number of channels the radio is capable of (16 Max in M1225).
The software does not know the capacity of your radio. Be certain the radio's channel
capacity is correct.

3) Next, enter the number of channels to trunk in Group 1. If you are programming for
only a single talk group, enter a "0" for Group 2, etc.. For Multiple Group users enter
the number of channels in each of up to 4 groups. Do not skip groups. When the
highest desired group is programmed, enter a "0" in the next higher group to end the
group selection. The radio will assign trunking groups in order starting with the 1st
channel in the radio. For example: If you program Group 1 to have three channels and
Group 2 to have four channels, the ETrunk PT board will assign Channels 1, 2 and 3 to
Group 1 and Channels 4, 5, 6 and 7 to Group 2, etc.

4) The next screen controls how fast the PT board scans in the radio, how long it transmits
to test the repeater and other items. In a typical 2-5 channel system, select 1 for
Normal. If you are using slower repeater panels(Zetron 38a using DPL) , unusual
frequency separations or a large number of trunked channels, try 2 for Slower. If you
require even slower characteristics, choose 3 for Slowest.

5) The next selection is for non-trunked channels. These channel(s) can be conventional
repeaters or talk around channels. The board allows as many non-trunked channels as
the radio can hold(16 max in M1225) after the trunking channels and groups are
added. The method of selecting the non-trunked channel(s) can be programmed as
follows: Select 1 for No non-trunked channels. Select 2 to allow the "Monitor"
switch(On the SM120/M1225 this button is black and shaped like a "Z")(On the SP50
it is the lower left orange button labeld "MON") to select a single non-trunked
channel(the actual channel will be asked next). Select 3 if you wish to have the channel
selector knob choose one of a number of non-trunked channels.

6) The next options require a "1" to activate or a "0" to turn the function off.

Beep Every 30 Seconds During T/A:

Entering a "1" here causes the radio to emit a short "beep" every 30 seconds when the
radio is left in the non-trunked mode. This serves as a reminder to the end user that he

Page -4-
is no longer trunking.

Dealer Test Mode:

Entering a "1" here allows the radio to enter the Dealer Test Mode by pressing the
Monitor button and holding for 8 seconds while powering up the radio. The Dealer
Test Mode allows manual channel changing for the dealer to bench test the radio. The
PTT switch is now active and the radio is no longer trunked until powered off and then
on again. A "0" here prevents the Dealer Test Mode from being accessed.

Boop on Acquisition:
A "1" here provides the normal 400 Hz "boop" when requesting a channel.
Enter a "0" to suppress the "boop". Do NOT turn off this tone unless you are
thoroughly familiar with Etrunk protocol!

Beep When Called:

A "1" here provides the normal 1000 Hz "beep" when first receiving a call. Enter a
"0" to suppress the "beep". Do NOT turn off this tone unless you are thoroughly
familiar with Etrunk protocol!

High Beep When Returning to Scan:

A "1" here will generate a 2000 Hz "hi beep" when the PT board detects that the
repeater has dropped out and the one second hysteresis timer is timed out. This can
alert the end user that he has lost the trunk. It is normally left off ("0").

Privacy Plus® Emulation:

The PT Multiple Group board is capable of emulating the call progress tones of
Motorola's Privacy Plus® 800 trunking system. This is very handy when you are trying
to win over customers that were used to this protocol. If this function is activated BE
SURE TO TURN OFF ALL OTHER ETRUNK TONES LISTED ABOVE!. A
"0" will turn this function off.

Auto PTT:
This function is used together with Privacy Plus above and automatically enters the PTT
mode when a successful acquisition takes place. The user then has 2 seconds to key
the PTT switch and make his call. After 2 seconds without PTT, the transmitter is
unkeyed via software. DO NOT ACTIVATE THIS FUNCTION WHEN NOT IN
PRIVACY PLUS EMULATION MODE. A "0" will turn this function off.

7) The ALL SCAN mode is a Multiple Group function activated by the lower right orange
button on the SP50 (the large orange button on the SM120)(“A” Button in M1225).
This function, when activated causes the PT board to scan through each programmed
group looking for a call. When a call is received, either 1,2,3 or 4 rapid beeps are

Page -5-
sounded at the beginning of the call to designate which group is receiving the call. If a
call is originated, the group last selected by the channel selector switch is the group that
the call is sent to. For example: If your radio is programmed for two groups, with
Group 1 being dispatch and Group 2 being interconnect, and your radio is placed in the
All Scan mode, and a telephone call comes in for you, your radio will beep twice. You
may then key your mike and answer the call regardless of what group is selected on
your channel selector. Similarly, if a dispatch call comes in, you would hear 1 beep and
would then have 5 seconds (repeater hang time) to answer the call. If you cannot get to
the radio in time to answer, simply rotate the channel selector(now the group selector)
to the group that called (in this case group 1), access a channel and make a call.
Turning the ALL SCAN feature off ("0") allows ONLY the channels in the currently
selected group to be scanned.(The ALL SCAN feature can only be turned off using
Etrunk Programming Software version 7.2 or later).

8) The Multiple Group Scan Mode when activated here with a "1" allows the radio
channel selector to be placed in Group 5 mode. This mode allows scanning any pre-
defined number of up to four groups in the radio. This mode is useful for covering
multiple areas with the end user not sure which area he is in. To access this mode,
rotate the channel selector to Group 5 and three ascending tones should be heard.
Unlike the ALL SCAN mode, when the user tries to acquire a channel, every group
that is activated in the Multi Group Scan Mode will be accessed until a repeater is
accessed. A "0" will prevent access to this mode.

9) The software next asks for a path into which to send the file. The default path matches
the default path supplied by Radius as follows:
SP50 "C:\MRSS\SP50\ARCHIVE\"
SM120 "C:\MRSS\SM50\ARCHIVE\"
M1225 “C:\MRSS\1225\ARCHIVE\”

If you are using any other path, please enter it by typing over the default information
being sure the "\" is at the end as shown and being sure not to include the quotes shown
above.

Next, enter a file name to save. Enter a unique name of up to eight characters/numbers
without the three letter DOS suffix . The software will append ".FRE" to the file and
save it in the archive file you entered.

10) Next load the RSS software for the appropriate radio to be programmed. Go into the
Signalling Systems Menu and then Add a System. Then, using the arrow keys select
"GENERIC".

11) Program the frequencies and CTCSS/DCS codes as usual for each desired channel
and assign the Generic signalling option to each channel.

Page -6-
12) In the Radio Wide Menu, disable all functions tied to the radio's switches.

13) Enter the Signalling Systems Menu, the GENERIC screen should now pop up. Locate
the "IMPORT" key (F9). Enter F9 and look for the file created above in Step 9.
Choose the correct listed file and enter F8 to Select. The MRSS software will now
read the ".FRE" file created by ETrunk Software.

14) Program the radio and save the data to Archive if desired. All data INCLUDING the
trunking parameters can be archived with the radio and cloned to other radios.
